Okay, I'm probably being cruel in the title... But, that's exactly how a friend described it last night. (O.o)

The topic started when I put this picture up in my Plurk:

Inworld friends watching my streams picked up on it and a couple commented that they'd never do that. One finally brought up a huge amount of shame she feels of logging in to SL. (._.)

I was kinda blown away. I don't know what anyone's social conditions are like, but, if I'm having fun I don't care if anyone knows. (O.o)

Also, could this be why SL is viewed as the sleazy sex den by some circles? Given, anyone they ask get instantly dodgy and ashamed. So... Poll time! I'm bloody curious. (^_^)

My family knows about my SL, at least the business end of it. Even my mom does, though I don't think she grasps the concepts entirely - to here its a game.

I don't hide it from my friends, but not sure all know about it.

I don't usually go into depth about my fun time in SL, though. o.o

as for the sex part .. well i dont show off pictures or tell them all about the RL stuff either so i dont see any difference between the two.

I don't use SL for sex, as my avatar is opposite my RL gender, so it would preclude doing so, even if I wanted to.

I guess personal preference. Even if I were interested in virtual sex, I'd never have it with a male avatar. The main reason mine is female in the first place is that when I started out, I wasn't a member and most of the free stuff that was worth a damn was for female av's. I'm again back in the same situation 2 years later. Plus, I figured if I was going to be on SL, I should at least be staring at something I'd like to look at.

This fits me, down to a "T", I don't use SL for sex [that ended a long, long time ago -IMO SL sex is stupid] but regardless I keep SL very, very secret from my friends [my RL family hates my guts and SL is the least of it].

I use it as a relief/escape away from my RL, so while theres a lot of embarrassment a huge part of my keeping it secret is the very real fear that I'll lose what's become a very much-needed 'alone place'.

believe me, there are many many sims and clubs dedicated to *just* that sort of sex in SL .... it not as uncommon as you think . .. you would be suprised at how many people just dont care what the other persons RL gender is.


but saying that no one is forcing you to have sex here, if you enjoy SL without it more power to you!

there are pently of things to do and fun activites in SL that dont involve sex in the least... kind of like real life like that ..

For me SL is more of a guilty pleasure than a dirty secret. Like watching trashy tv or reading forums .

My family knows I play, but I feel a bit guilty about how much time exactly (and how much money) I spend playing dress up. Just as I'd feel silly if my family knew I spent hours playing with barbie dolls. I don't have sl sex but I do dress my avy in naughty things sometimes or spawn a giant male attachment in my room for the fun of it. That sort of thing I wouldn't do if family was watching.

I wouldn't be too happy with myself if I woke up one day to find I had become one of those old ladies that collects hundreds of expensive barbies and keeps them in a special spare bedroom.

edit - Not that I feel SL has no worth, it's more the amount of time I spend on it. The friends I've made are very valuable and I'm proud of things I've built.

A pretty cool guy I know admitted to using WoW publicly, as a guilty pleasure - somehow that seemed way more cool than admitting to SL.

Although really, I wouldn't judge anyone badly about SL of course - but I do think the public perception of SL is seriously bad - and that should be a huge priority of the lab - PR and brand management. (if the platform has much of a future...)

I am also pretty circumspect though because I instantly set out to drag my character's reputation through the mud in RP and such - lol. And I know some people can't separate fantasy from reality.
