Topic 13 part 1 - Auto ask functions to zRZ

Autoasking for consent to a background check and if they donīt answer in 60 seconds the consent is implied, of course this does not count for lag or residents who donīt speak english and wonīt understand what they are being asked to accept.

Fuzen brags about how this forum is exclusive and no one has acces to it

Zfire doesnīt belive being AFK is an excuse and if no answer is given after 60 seconds consent is a given.

Suggestion that pressing ignore would mean yes to consent and the story of a clothes maker that puts a tracker in her clothng line

Again someone suggests the opt-in should be on Zfireīs site and wants a 7 day hold on the opt-out requests ( that would make alts visible for 7 days after the person opted out of it) Zfire things this delay is a good idea and states they already have to sign up on the site to opt-out.

Topic 13 part 2 -Auto ask functions to zRZ

Several posts on how everyone is mean and horrible to them.

Aparently booting people who donīt consent seems to cause crashes as one user states.

More about being able to protect your land and one user notes that if you only adimt age verified users hit helps with griefing, ah who would have thought about that using the sim acess to stop griefing

They finally realize no one can read or consent anything in 5/10 seconds before being booted off and most of the times having their viewer crash.

Zfire fights to fix this bug.

Topic 14 - Feature Request

So the website give the users info with media off this would be general info on nukmbers of visitors with media off like the one in the types of used viewers, and also include that on the so called Character Cards. That do list the number of alts associated with someone but not their names since that is no longer allowed.

  • The fine folk at zFire's forum have suggested he start a proxy service for music streams, so that he can scrape people's data without them knowing.
  • zFire's planning on adding the ability to ban people by country.
  • Quickware's alt detector is no longer on sale. (The vendor is still there, but clicking it just gives you a notecard saying it's been discontinued.)
  • Sparrow Industries also markets an alt detector. It appears to use www.sparrowindustries.net.
  • The consensus is that Paisley Beebe did her research before the GreenZone interview and that it went well. The show should be made available for viewing on the Web and on iTunes in the next day or two.
  • Eva Ryan got post #10,000. We're all very proud of her, or jealous, depending.

A number of you have ARd or sent notes about the other system we removed from the marketplace, pointing out that the creator plans to continue operating in violation of ToS. Stay tuned, and I'll make sure folks understand this internally.

In the mean time, if you see one of his resale vendors, you should Abuse Report the vendor's owner. File the AR against the object's owner whether the vendor is owned by the creator, an alt of the creator, or set out by others for commission. For the AR type, select "Harassment->Soliciting/Inciting others to Violate ToS." Feel free to add a link to this comment.

As always, file ARs based on first-hand knowledge. There's nothing wrong with peers filing additional ARs to underscore importance. However, each person filing should take a close look and ensure they understand the object of the AR and how they would personally justify the AR if asked.

Further JIRA posts by Lindens, Tuesday, March 8th.

From Soft Linden, on the RedZone JIRA (VWR-24746):
Quote:
Thank you for the additional ARs, all. After some research and follow-up with some of you who reported, it's clear that there is no such thing as a ToS-compliant version of QuickWare Alts Pro. For lack of a good faith effort on resolving issues associated with this device, many assets have been blacklisted and accounts held. I can't go into specifics beyond that.

If you see QuickWare Alts Pro return under a new name or creator, please select the device and file Abuse Reports against the device's owner. Be sure to mention which specific device you have found.

As always, file ARs based on first-hand knowledge. There's nothing wrong with peers filing additional ARs to underscore importance. However, each person filing should take a close look and ensure they understand the object of the AR. They should personally be able to justify the AR if asked. Brief and verifiable is best.
Soft Linden, same JIRA:
Quote:
Folks - do me a favor and move traffic elsewhere if you're discussing something not specifically related to alt disclosure.

If you need to create new JIRAs or go to the new forums as appropriate, go ahead and drop a link here when you move the discussion. But let's keep this focussed on alt disclosure. And remember: if you haven't read the entire thread, odds are you're just repeating things others have said. That extra noise makes it less likely anyone's going to pull useful new information out of later comments.
And from Oz Linden, on the JIRA about removing the "Hide URL" checkbox for media URLs (STORM-1037):
Quote:
Really.... STOP arguing here. This code is done, and will be in the next regular release of the viewer.
Those of you arguing that the URL should be hidden are ignoring the fact that it never really was.

If we need a media security feature, hiding the URL is not enough anyway, and this issue is NOT the place to discuss it.

And the first summary of the new thread:

  • The Paisley Beebe GreenZone interview is now available for streaming on the Web.
  • Soft Linden posted to the JIRA again with the news that QuickWare Alts Pro has been banninated into the ground.
  • Guy Quicksand of QuickWare noted on his website that his accounts were all banned after he supposedly sold the source code to somebody else. He went on to say that if his account was not unblocked in two days, he'd start coding again "but without concidering TOS." Apparently we're all On Notice.
  • Soft also requested that comments not specifically dealing with alt disclosure be taken elsewhere.
    • Some are taking this as a veiled suggestion that he'd welcome a separate JIRA about alt detection and related issues.
    • Others are taking a more cynical view.
  • Oz Linden reiterated that removing the "Hide URL" checkbox from media streams is a done deal, and will be in the next release.
  • Further investigation confirms that Sparrow Industries is selling a device that outs alts in-world, in violation of the TOS. For those properly shielded who want to check on this (and AR them), their vendors are here.
  • And we've found another couple of illegal devices, from somebody who supposedly just joined SL. Expensive, too...
    • The creator of the last of those is no longer showing up in Search, though the items are still on the Marketplace.
  • Jessica Lyon of Phoenix Viewer has issued a statement about their planned inclusion of Sione's patch.
  • Magnuz Binder has issued a notecard about his decision to abandon SL due to this issue.

Just to add something missing from the above notes: It was discovered that the Neighbourhood Watch feature at isellsl.ath.cx is disclosing alt details. See Eva's post for more. Neighbourhood Watch is a system for which buyers of RedZone get write access, and non-RZ users get read-only access. Anybody scoring lower than minus 15 on the system gets automatically banned from RedZone. It turns out that some RZ users have been posting alt information in the database which remains available.

Yes, it seems that a) zfire trusts his customers far too much. b) He needs to scrub the NW note for inadvertent alt exposures. c) He won't do it because it wasn't his fault. d) RZ users have found a work around for alt exposing without violating TOS (so they think). e) zFire is a douch.

And here's the brouhaha du jour...

  • Quickware is continuing its wacky hijinks. Yesterday, a new avie named "Altdetector Resident" sent a notecare to QW users, offering an update that while, less advanced, is "undetectable and untracable."
  • Altdetector Resident was immediately banned by LL.
  • Today's big story involves a YouTube video first posted here by Psyke; apparently he got it from Theia; she and the person behind no2redzone got it at the same time from somebody they're not naming.
    • The original has been taken down, but others have reuploaded it to YouTube. It's also available for download.
    • The original was posted as an unlisted video August 3, 2010, long before this story really started taking off.
      • Unlisted YouTube videos can be seen only by somebody who has the URL.
      • As far as anybody knows, there's no way of faking the date a YouTube video was uploaded.
    • The video, entitled "To Mariana =)" with the description "Our secret!" shows somebody explaining that he has made a webpage "for us" that provides information about SL users.
    • The person in the video says that the page will tell him whether a given person owns RedZone, has tested RedZone, or is on a RedZone safelist.
    • He goes on to say that the thing that'll be of more interest to the person he made this video for is that the page will also provide possible SL passwords of the people who use the iSellSL website... which mostly means RedZone users.
      • It does this largely by logging failed password attempts. The idea is that people lose track of which password is which, and accidentally enter their SL password onto the RedZone site.
      • The person in the video claims to have tested this, successfully finding some people's SL passwords.
    • As an added bonus, he's also going to add a display of their real-life locations.
  • Opinions are mixed as to the exact significance of the video, but largely fall into one of three camps:
    • This video was made by zFire, and he's totally busted.
    • There is no one "zFire"; this video was made by one of the people behind that enterprise. (Some think there are at least two people: Mike and John.) They're totally busted.
    • We don't know what this video means or who made it... and isn't it at least a little suspicious that this video's URL just happened to show up? If it's real, who leaked it, and why?
  • Numerous people have viewed various other videos linked to zFire and Insanity Productions LLC, finding support for one of the first two theories just above.
  • Finally, in other grid news, InWorldz has said flat out that it won't allow RedZone-like systems.

It hasn't been that long since the last summary, but another one is totally warranted.

  • On the SLU side, people were cross-referencing it with other videos from zFire and Insanity Productions, finding remarkable similarities between the voices and faces of the people therein.
  • On zFire's forum, the prevailing opinion was that of course the video was a fake, made by the anti-RedZone griefers to try to bring him down.
  • The consensus here was that whether the video was real or not, zFire would have to be a complete idiot and/or a pathological liar to address it at all without consulting a lawyer.
  • So of course he addressed it.
    • On his forum, zFire explained that of course the video was a fake.
    • He said that this new account, "mars006kgb", had nothing to do with him.
    • He said that he wouldn't need "mars006kgb", because he already had "insantiyproductions" and "marskgb006" and other YouTube accounts.
    • He outlined a vast Green-wing conspiracy, telling all manner of lies to try to bring RedZone down, with this shameless copycat account being just the latest example.
  • There was just one teensy little catch: the "new" mars006kgb channel page was still cached on Google.
    • mars006kgb's account (the "fake" one) was created on April 4, 2008.
    • marskgb006's account (the "real" one) was created on April 8, 2008.
  • For zFire's claim to make any sense, the anti-RedZone forces would have had to have made their account four days before he did.
  • On SLU, at least, this is now conclusively settled. The only reasonable explanation is that he (or his team) made both accounts, the video is real, and he's been lying his ass off to everybody.
  • On his own forum, zFire has explained that, well, clearly the only possible explanation is that the anti-RedZone forces found a way of hacking YouTube to change the signup date.
  • Just to be absolutely clear for anybody who doesn't have a YouTube account... no, that can't actually be done.
  • Incidentally, somewhere along the way there, zFire averred that "my server is the most secure server and database in all of Secondlife" and challenged people to try to hack it.
  • Also, it turns out zFire is publicly listed as a member of an inworld group that presents itself as some sort of computer crime syndicate.
  • Several highly empathetic members on this forum have expressed sincere concern for zFire's psychological wellbeing in the wake of all this.
    • The general consensus is that while zFire may be a bad person, a pathological liar, and/or an evil sack of shit with delusions of grandeur, he's still a human being and we don't want him to actually kill himself or anything.
    • Others have pointed out that pathological liars have the amazing ability not to let anything get to them, so that's not likely to be a problem.
  • In other news, Quickware's website is now advertising services to help you get right back into Second Life, even if you've been hardware banned by LL.
  • It's also offering the source code for its alt-detector to the highest bidder.

tl;dr:

We're in "breaking news" territory; possibly I should wait till it's settled down. It's really remarkably interesting breaking news, though...

  • Psyke tracked down the "KoM" referred to in that screenshot, finding Knights of Mars. Apparently, that is or was a service in which people collected L$ bounties for getting SL accounts banned. (That last link is anonymized for your protection.)
    • My favorite bit of the FAQ: "Is this against SecondLife's TOS?" "You bet! So read SL's TOS if you want to know more."
    • Another item in the FAQ notes that they "are building our own copybot detection system. Currently (April/2/2010) CDS Gemini does not stop ANY copybot with media turned off. '!quit' does nothing but spam. Even Emerald can be modified to steal objects. Shame on Emerald! In the meantime, report copybotters to us and we ban them."
    • The service was allegedly founded by somebody named "Mars", whose avatar was banned from SL. Though he's back with an alt, no worries.
      • We'd already established that zFire was in a "syndicate" founded by Mars Metzer, a "blackhat" cracker who had been banned from SL.
      • We also know zFire uses "Mars" as the basis of the name for his own YouTube account.
      • There was a copy of the KoM site hosted by zFire, and the two websites have the same IP address.
      • All of which strongly suggests that either zFire is Mars's alt, or they're two people on the same team.
  • The hackers sent more details and screenshots to the Alphaville Herald. (I totally recommend you follow that link.)
    • Allegedly, the password given for zFire's site and "possible SL PW(s)" are displayed to those with access.
    • Also allegedly, the security was pathetic, and the passwords were stored in plain text in addition to the encrypted version. Which, in addition to being desirable only if the administrator wanted to misuse them, is, like, Security 001.
    • The screenshots suggest that users of zFire's animation product were similarly compromised.
  • One of the error messages returned when trying to log into the site certainly seems to indicate that failed logins were being recorded.
  • Aaaand zFire's forum just went back up, and then down again.
  • Before all of that hit, there were a few other items of interest:
    • Emilly Orr pointed out in a blog post that if you ever installed RedZone, you need to be sure to change the Media URL to get rid of its last traces.
      • (Note that having the old RZ Media URL in the land settings is harmless, but it can make it look like you're still running RedZone to those checking.)
    • Bronxelf's latest column is up.
    • Much discussion of proposed ways of notifying residents about the problem of media exploits and how to deal with them.
I have RL work to do, so I'm going to do my best to look away from the trainwreck for the next few hours. But I'm sure another summary will be warranted tonight.

    • Unlike Cool VL Viewer, Phoenix turns the filter on by default.
  • Interesting minor point: we'd been having trouble parsing one line in the infamous YouTube video, with the best guess being "nobody else can access this page but thee and Z."
    • "Thee" seemed like an odd, out-of-character archaism. Other guesses included "me and Z" or "thee and sie," but none seemed satisfactory.
    • Somebody noticed that on his own forum, in pointing out that the video was too perfect, zFire said that it included his "secondlife account name initials."
    • zFire's partner, who is also the co-admin of his forum, is Vasilisa Shilova.
    • We now figure the line is "Nobody else can access this page but V and Z"... as confirmed by the person who'd know.
  • It should be noted that the following is sheer speculation, and not up to the standard of evidence we have on most other claims. With that said...
    • Based on "Sculpts with Txt Recorded" in one screenshot, it seems possible that zFire's been recording the UUIDs of sculpties used with his prim animation tool. If so, he'd be able to copy them at will.
    • He'd certainly be able to copy the prim animation scripts at will, if he wanted to.
    • At this point, few of us are inclined to doubt that he'd squirrel away any such information he had access to, whether or not he actually used it.
    • From there, given access to passwords, a means of duplicating content, one service devoted to hunting down avatars, and another service devoted to home defense, it becomes hard to resist noting the potential ways to use some of these in the service of others, and we start going down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. Protection rackets! Grabbing people's inventories and using alts to confront them with "copybotters," which you just happen to have a system to stop! Framing people for content theft! The possibilities are almost endless!
    • Then again, this goes beyond the evidence we have, and some of us think we've put more thought into the possibilities than zFire ever did. Perhaps best to focus on the things we know zFire is guilty of.
    • Here endeth the wild speculation.
  • The question of what former RZ users can use instead has come up again.
    • The consensus is that there is no automated way of detecting copybots; anybody who claims otherwise is trying to sell you something that won't work.
    • The very old copybotting clients that announced themselves -- the only detectable sort -- have been banned by LL for some time, and cannot get inworld. Those that can get in cannot be detected automatically.
    • Alternative recommendations include: having staff onhand to deal with customers and keep an eye on things; having good relationships with your customers, so they'll tell you if they see anything amiss; and accepting the things you cannot change, which includes the fact that all digital content can be copied.
    • As for the handy Web-based interface -- not to mention what had been an excellent prim-animation tool -- there still seems to be an opening for an enterprising and ethical coder who can fill the vacuum.
  • Dune, Wheel of Time, Hitchhiker's Guide, George R.R. Martin... there are a lot of geeks here. I'm just saying.
  • Somebody showed up here claiming to be the person who leaked stuff to the Alphaville Herald, providing a few more screenshots as evidence.
    • They further said they were not the person who commented on no2redzone, meaning that multiple people went into zFire's system yesterday.
    • And they added that zFire's alts -- as recorded by his own database -- include MARS Quan and a couple of others. (See previous summary, re: Knights of Mars, for possible relevance.)
  • No2redzone claims to have heard from another source who injected "significant quantities of false data" into the database.
  • Meanwhile, zFire's forum has shown occasional, blink-and-you'll-miss-it signs of life, but has mostly been down all day.
  • There are mixed reports as to whether RedZone is working at the moment.
  • Finally, Cristiano posted a Thank You announcement for everyone who's been involved in the work on this issue.
P.S.: Guys, I appreciate the compliments, I really, really do, but let's not clutter up the thread with them any further, okay?

Double posting for posterity, since it's going to rapidly get buried in the other thread. Someone said that all they were using RZ for was to keep track of who they personally greeted, I came up with this as an alternative.
-------------------------------------------------
This is a greeter script I just did, it greets them in regular chat and invites them to click for a notecard, but only if they're not in the last 64 people to visit. The only tracking it does is internal for the sake of reducing spammy. Note: They don't have to be greeted, they can still get another notecard if they want.

Drop this script and a notecard in an object, then leave it close to a landing point.

Code:
//v1.0
//   released
//v1.1
// Switch to Do-While instead of For
// Moved greet spam to inside of If (oops)
// Optimized list addition for LSO
// Upped scan rate to 15.0s

string greeting1 = "Hello,";
string greeting2 = "Please click me if you'd like an informational notecard.";

string greeting_for_no_note = "I'm sorry, I seem to have run out of notecards, please enjoy your visit";

string notecard;
key owner;
integer Handler;
integer channel;

GetNoteCardName()
{
    notecard = llGetInventoryName(INVENTORY_NOTECARD,0);
    if(notecard == "")
    {
        llOwnerSay("ERROR: No notecard in inventory!");
    }

}
DeliverNote(key ID)
{
    if(notecard != "")
    {
        llGiveInventory(ID,notecard);
    }
    else
    {
        llSay(0,"greeting_for_no_note");
    }
}

list visitors;
string notecardname;

default
{
    state_entry()
    {
        owner = llGetOwner();
        llSensorRepeat("",NULL_KEY,AGENT,96.0,PI,15.0);
        GetNoteCardName();
        channel =(integer)("0x"+llGetSubString(owner,27,30));
    }
    sensor(integer ND)
    {
        --ND; //we want N-1 because the detected is 0 to N-1, not 1 to N
        do
        {
            string testname =llDetectedName(ND);
            if(llListFindList(visitors,[testname]) == -1) //if not in list
            {
                // for LSO, optimal is myList = (myList=[]) + myList + new_item;
                visitors = (visitors=[]) + visitors + testname;
                llSay(0,greeting1+" "+testname+" "+greeting2);
                // Keep list short to avoid memory issues.
                if(llGetListLength(visitors) > 64)

                }
            }

            Handler = llListen(channel,"",owner,"");
        }
        else DeliverNote(llDetectedKey(0));

    listen(integer ch,string name, key id,string txt)
    {
        if(txt == "Test")
        {
           DeliverNote(owner);
        }
        else if (txt = "Reset")
        {
            llResetScript();
        }
        llSetTimerEvent(0.0);
        llListenRemove(Handler);
    }
    timer()
    {
        llListenRemove(Handler);
        llOwnerSay("Timed out while waiting for response, click again for menu.");
        llSetTimerEvent(0.0);
    }
    on_rez(integer R)
    {
        if(owner != llGetOwner())
        {
            llResetScript();
        }
    }

}
Note, I did this on the spur of the moment, so it's only been quickly tested for basic functionality.

And here's a cheesy clipart you can use to decorate the prim:

  • There's a sequel to the Redzone is KAPUT video on YouTube. It's cute.
  • There are allegations that LL forum moderators are violating users' privacy, by posting screenshots with IP addresses to a publicly accessible site... but that has its own spinoff thread, and damned if I'm gonna start chronicling another one.
  • I should have mentioned this earlier, but Cristiano has bestowed three SLU badges in the course of this thread:
    • The Best Redzoneapalooza Posting to Nynaboo: "For once again managing to write the ultimate post in a raging drama. http://bit.ly/ifIrS8"
    • The Guinea Pig award to Walker: "For your bravery and selfless efforts in the Great Redzone War of 2011."
    • The Thank You award to Sione: "Thank you for your efforts to help inform and protect users from Redzone."
  • Not a whole lot happened today.
    • In fact, the thread went for 30 whole minutes without a post today at two different points.
    • Perhaps it's winding down?
    • Dare we hope that we'll be able to have lives again—First and Second Lives—and not spend our days refreshing the thread over and over?
    • I know, I know, it's just a beautiful dream...
  • Finally, the title of the thread has been changed from "Redzone Epic Thread Part Deux" to the far superior "Redzone 2: Electric Boogaloo." (Suggested by Nynaboo, implemented by Cris.)

  • Cris added a fourth award in this thread, to some abridger or something.
  • Sparrow claims not to be recording IP addresses anymore, and claims not to be located in the EU. Meanwhile, it's still available in-world.
  • The Neighborhood Watch has had entries added and deleted all day. It's not entirely clear whether zFire is trying to clean his database (undoing the damage caused by the hackers), or zFire is trying to purge his database entirely (ahead of a police investigation), or hackers are still totally screwing with it.
  • A bunch of SLU members have joined Twitter, and a lot of them have been tweeting Rod Humble (@rodvik), demanding to know what he's going to do about all this.
  • Rod himself (as confirmed by Cris) has stopped by to say a few words, though not on this subject. But we know he's at least looked at the big thread.
  • There's talk of a Twitter campaign to raise awareness of the whole privacy fail thing. Suggested hashtags are #sl, #secondlife and/or #secondlifeprivacy.
  • Inara's started a thread for further discussion of "Media, Privacy, Security and Educating Users," dealing with the wider issues, not any specific problematic services.
  • Another domain for the hosts file and blacklists: pxl.dyndns.biz. We don't yet know which system it is, but it sure looks like spyware.
So much for the easy stuff. Beyond that... I have a dilemma.
  • Much of today's discussion was about a bombshell revelation about zFire's past. Naturally, I ought to be summarizing it.
  • On the other hand, another large chunk of today's discussion was about the ethics of digging into zFire's past. It makes a lot of us uncomfortable, in a thread about privacy rights, to dig into somebody else's dirty laundry.
  • There isn't a complete consensus on any of this.
    • Most of us think it's appropriate to figure out what zFire's doing now with SL user data.
    • A lot of us think it's appropriate to figure out who else is in on the racket. This necessarily means looking at his known associates and figuring out who's who.
    • The same people would agree that we should be striving to keep those who aren't involved out of the discussion to the fullest extent possible.
    • Meanwhile, let's face it, after the past few weeks, it is exhilarating to get concrete proof that zFire is every bit as much of a douchecanoe as we've been saying, and then some.
    • Some of us feel that, well, he's brought this on himself. He's had chance after chance after chance to stop violating other people's and make everything go away, and now... isn't karma a bitch?
    • On the other hand, the joy of seeing his dirty laundry is not entirely different from the joy people got from knowing other people's alts. We ought to be better than that.
    • On the other other hand, considering that some RedZone users are still defending the twatwaffle, a case can be made that proof that he's a bad guy is relevant.
With all of that said, this is meant to be a summary of what's happened in the thread, and while I leave a lot of tangental stuff out, to skip this would be a complete neglect of duty. So I'm gonna give the basics, and I'll be providing links to all the sources. On the other hand, I was going to pull out and summarize a lot more of the details from those sources, and make a bunch of connections to what we know about zFire. Based on the later discussions, I'm going to pass on that.

Should you prefer to ignore the bombshell du jour entirely, skip the remainder of this post. This is why I front-loaded everything else.
  • The following concerns one Michael Prime of Washington state. Some of the discussion earlier was about whether we were certain it's our Mike Prime, AKA zFire Xue.
  • As far as I can tell, that has been settled beyond reasonable doubt. But you're free to keep an open mind.
  • So, to the point. In 1999, when Michael Prime was 19, he was arrested and charged with various federal crimes.
  • There's a relevant New York Times article as well.
  • He was tried in 2001, and convicted in 2002.
  • He lost an appeal in 2004, and this is the interesting document of the bunch. There's an HTML version and a PDF version.
  • Specifically, he was found guilty of selling non-existent items on eBay, selling pirated software, counterfeiting money orders and using them to buy real items on eBay, and buying more items using stolen credit card data.
  • (Three co-conspirators were named, two of whom testified against him. The last has since gone on to appear on zFire's YouTube channel...)
  • There's more stuff in there about prior convictions, but let that pass.
  • He was released from prison May 23, 2008.
  • zFire Xue signed up for Second Life on June 11, 2008.
  • If we're doing the math right and understanding the situation properly -- which is not a given -- Michael Prime is still on probation for about another two months.
  • That said... we're not a jury. How can we get this in front of one?
  • Cummere Mayo notes that there's more dirt out there on Mr. Prime, and offers this advice:
    • For those here that used redzone or had accounts on any form of isellsl.com or isellsl.ath.cx I would suggest filing complaints on Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) about zfire.
    • you can if you like reference in #29663080

Minor update of major breaking news...

zFire Xue... Banned
TheBoris Gothly... Banned
The MARS Syndicate... Apparently Wiped Out (Maybe banning the members? Uncertain answers)
zFire's Store... Cleaned out by Soft
RedZone... Apparently Blacklisted (Conflicting Reports, so uncertain)

Of course, we haven't heard the end of this, and I'm sure Samantha will have a full update next time she's around.

Here we go!

  • zFire Xue has been banned from Second Life!
  • Also, at least two alts have been banned as well.
  • And Soft Linden cleared out zFire's shop.
  • And there was some rejoicing, and possibly even gloating.
  • At this point, there's been no statement by LL. Opinions are mixed as to whether we'll ever get one.
  • This also means there's been no further clarification of LL's stance on datamining. We know he's gone, but we don't know what specifically the grounds were. Goodness knows there's been plenty to choose from.
  • It looks like the scripts have been nuked from RedZone devices throughout the grid. (The prims may still be around, and some media URLs on parcels may still be pointing to his server, but identifying information won't be passed along anymore.)
  • What will be done with zFire's database -- and any copies made by hackers -- is still a disturbingly open question.
  • In short, most of us are braced for another shoe to drop in the long, strange case of zFire, and the larger privacy issues still aren't solved.
  • Meanwhile, just before this went down, an interview with zFire (from this past Saturday) was published in the Alphaville Herald.
    • zFire noted that RedZone "is intended to do the Job Linden Labs completely fails at doing", blocking "the cyber criminals of SecondLife. By every means necessary."
    • He also noted that he was not afraid of being banned because "Linden Labs knows fact from fiction."
    • [pause for gloating]
    • He asserted that Linden Labs [sic] loved the continued protests over RedZone, as all publicity is good publicity.
    • His final message to readers was as follows: "ARing my ISP, inventing fake law, rumors, whatever. Snitching off my Boris to animal control… yeah ok mother fuckers. I will see you join him next."
  • This contained one new claim. Apparently he had a raccoon named Boris, who'd been in some YouTube videos until now, and apparently Animal Control found out.
    • Some people have pointed out that if this is true, it might be the first honest thing we've ever heard from zFire. Many of us are inclined to believe it, but we don't really know.
    • Assuming it is true, we don't actually know who tipped off Animal Control. It might have been somebody who knows him in Real Life, perhaps the same person who leaked his video last week. It might have been a neighbor. It might have been a member of law enforcement who was checking the case out and found the video.
    • We are reasonably sure that it wasn't anybody from SLU, because the raccoon was mentioned earlier only once, in passing. Certainly nobody here suggested doing anything like this.
    • Which is a good thing, because the unanimous opinion in these parts is that You Don't Mess With The Pets. Period. If this is true, somebody went way out of line.
  • Before all that, there'd been a story reported that suggested that some of our more ambitious protection-scheme conspiracy theories were true.
  • zFire's partner, Vasilisa Shilova, suspected by many here as being the brains of the operation, is still inworld. Ditto Pussy Guisse, partner of his alt, MARS Quan.
  • In other news, Sparrow Industries no longer sells its alt detector, and no such device is in use at its HQ.
  • Finally, this should be noted, courtesy of Anthonio:
    • At multiple points in the first part of this thread, Sling claimed that page 666 (under the default numbering of 25 posts per page) would usher in the End of the Daze.
    • This crisis was seemingly averted when Cristiano closed the thread on page 421.
    • We got the news of zFire's banning on page 245 of the new thread.
    • 421 + 245 = 666.

(Also, while I was writing this, Daniel wrote a better take on zFire as Julius Caesar.)
