Unhappy Numbakulla closing this week

I am very sorry to tell you that Numbakulla will be closing this week.

There is an enormous number of people who have kept it open for the past six years. Moopf Murray who originally ran the contest which led to the creation of Numbakulla... the team of people who helped to create it, including Cierrah Blair, Ratt Foo, Baron Grayson, Sky Everett, Slade Onizuka, Strife Onizuka, Ambiance Anubis, Lost Therian, Selador Cellardoor, Zapoteth Zaius....

Then there are the people who helped to buy the sim and pay the tier fees for the first year of operation, including Katva Baldwin, Dave Holiday, Lyn Holiday, Alan Keisler, Moopf Murray, Catja LaFollette, Snapdragon Drayton, wongtong Chung, Leeloo Dassin and many many many more. Most especially of course my SL partner Oclee Hornet, who has been paying the tier fees for the past five years.

I'm grateful to everyone who contributed, donated, helped. Of course, I am also grateful to the people who played the game and spread the word about it.

It's hard to say goodbye to the sim, but I live in hope of rebuilding in OpenSim at some stage in the future.
Cali

I just looked at its description in search, sounds like it was a cool place, will probably have a look before it closes, shame it's closing, seems over the years so many wonderful sims have closed.

Numbakulla, as old as it is, is still one of the best examples of a videogame like experience in SL. It's sad to hear it's going away.

I hope it's still open Friday, when I have the day off, or at least I can find some free time between now and then to go for one last visit.

Thanks for the heads-up, I'm sad to hear it's closing, and will try to visit and perhaps finish the game this week

Numbakulla was always one of my favorite places - I sent armies of newbies there during the time I was a mentor.

All you new people --- GO!!!!

Prepare to spend some time figuring out the puzzles and working your way through the sim, it is a Myst style adventure that might take slow people (like me) a couple of days to work through.

Well, poop. Numbakulla is one of my favorites as well. I actually just finished it a few months ago. I have the picture frame from the end up in my house. I know everything comes to an end, but I don't have to like it.

Thank you for your kind words. The game still attracts a decent number of players, and some support calls... I take comfort from the fact that people seem to get stuck for very different reasons at different places in the game.

I forgot to mention the music: when Numbakulla first opened in July 2005, we were generously allowed to use Moopf Murray's stream and his wonderful ambient music (which is now available on his website). Later, Oclee kindly hosted a stream of the music of Erlend Viken, otherwise known as Soup, who kindly gave permission for it to be used.

Also the doggerel poetry which I composed and of which I was relatively proud. My favourite was:
Although I never stayed to see
The blooming of the sacred tree
I think the spirit of the race
Has wound some magic round this place

The life is stirring all around
Birds and insects loudly sound
The coming of another day
And, on this island, hold their sway

I cannot stay to watch the light
of stars and sea which shine so bright
But I have faith that one day soon
Some other eyes will watch the moon

From Numbakulla's look out tree,
See all the sights so dear to me
And solve the mystery of the Quest
And find the reason this place's blest

Numbakulla was a team build in the best sense. We learned a lot from each other, and informed each other's building. I will always be grateful to Moopf for the experience that this gave me of managing a project virtually. Then the support of the players when it was first threatened with closure, was touching, and it kept it alive for a whole year more. Oclee kindly shouldered the burden of the tier after that.

I know it brought pleasure to many people, and that it was ground-breaking when it opened, Ratt Foo creating local lighting before local lighting existed, and all sorts of innovations which still impress, but were amazing in 2005.

I'm contacting all the people who were involved in the building of it, and will keep it open as long as I can, certainly until the end of the weekend, for those who haven't visited before.

Really sorry to hear that Caliandris. Was always somewhere I liked to visit and it's sad another great place will not be on the grid. <3

It is always sad to see great builds close. I know the Myst Community will morn its passing.

I do hope you can move it to an OpenSim grid where costs are more reasonable.

On OSGrid a number of Myst fans are building regions and developing fan story with a Myst-Uru Style or spin.

The more story oriented types from OSGrid are to be found at Devokan Trust. The more technical builder types can be found on the GoMa forum. There are SL and OpenSim people there as well as the Myst fans. In either place you can find help for moving to OpenSim.

Thank you again for all your kind words.

Ratt left a message that the game had been played by 28,500 people. That's quite a lot, even over 6 years :-).

Since it had been a little while since I had been back, I decided to go and take some snapshots of my favorite things in Numbakulla. I've uploaded them to Snapzilla and added them to the "numbakulla" tag. If I can get in tonight, I'll probably add some more pictures.

Thank you for providing this place for all of us to enjoy over the last 6 years. It's been a year or two since I've been there, will have to make one more stop. Beautiful work. Thanks

Bizarrely, I've been in SL since 2006 and had never heard of this sim until this thread. Went and visited - amazing! I haz one pot shard

Is it closing strictly for cost reasons, or are there other causes as well? (for example, has a lot broken over the years that no one can fix)

It's closing for cost reasons. There is some broken content... we had an airship which seemed to be terminally borked by one of the server updates, although I am sure that isn't insoluble, as Ratt has popped in this week and could possibly redo it.

If we found an angel, I am sure that could be fixed.

are you mainland or estate? I always thought you were estate but if you've been around since 2005 I thought you would've been mainland.

Oh and anyway these aren't the best pics but I looked at the sim a few days ago and took some pics, I didn't get very far but I wasn't expecting to since it's in a game format and I wasn't playing.
