Just noticed another good reason for calling it "Phoenix" - is an anagram of "i.e. no Phox".

eek - that must mean we will get "Emerald Wars - The Phox Menace" next - but it might be a bit of a wait!

Nah, cant happen yet - the existing trilogy has to be tweaked, remastered and re-released at least 10 times first.

On a more serious note, now that this is happening, with an existing clean build that has ALREADY applied for TPVD entry under a new name theres even less reason for LL to hold off swinging the banhammer on the bad one and the bad guys that made it so....

And precisely how do we know it's clean code? From what I've read Emerald was NEVER really clean. The days of assuming and expecting are over and if Phoenix is built on Emerald it's a non-starter for me.

Agreed...I'm very very excited about this considering the names involved BUT I'm holding out for someone to get a hold of the source code or something or at least a few weeks to see what happens.

I have the feeling the Lab reached out to Jessica to make this happen this quickly. Arabella is going to rampage for a week now over this. In the tapes she was hoping Jessica would get banned with her - now that is obviously not going to happen. Arabella needs to grab an alt, apply lessons learned and get back to work on something that does not rely on sociopathic coders.

I'm logging in and sending Jessica's notecard to all of my groups. Make it viral.

So far, they have one ex-Linden (Data, Vortex Saito), but I don't see Qarl or a credible alt for him.

It is a serious problem when getting a checksum from the source means nothing.

These folks may well be fine, upstanding people. I still have to ask if I trust my computer to someone whose identity is given by one of those names. In the real world I trust "scrappy" because I know that he is Marc Fournier.

unlike emerald, this project has a public repos.. anyone who wants can look at the code as its being developed between releases... plus the Phoenix team are talking about getting involved with the snowstorm project too (some of them already are) - you think theres going to be anything hinky left in the code when they are sharing their viewer improvements directly with LL? Or at least if there is I'm betting it will be speedily caught and shot. Thats a guess on my part but an informed one based on how I've seen similar dramas play out elsewhere in the opensource world.

Personally I would think of this development - a clean fork of a highly popular TPV and a firm intent to work with the snowstorm project - as the best thing that could possibly happen. Phoenix could easily become the semi-official "v1 interface on v2 functionality" that everyone who hates v2 has been wishing for, along with some of the extra cool stuff making its way back into the official v2 as well.

Just so long as the Phoenix team backport multiattach quickly, so that they can get rid of the xml hack gracefully before Snowstorm steamrollers their extra attach points by making official use of the reserved range of attachment ids that emerald used to make their duplicates.

Well I'm sure it will at least be interesting to watch the progress of, if nothing else. I can understand being wary of anything coming out right now, especially with Emerald anywhere near it.

In fact this means that the next is "The Phox Wars Holiday Special - Christmas in Emerald".

I actually couldn't think of a shitty thing to say about any of it other than the predictable name choice.

The fact they're seriously considering Snowstorm is a good touch, since everyone should be at this point. In the long run, it'll be far less work cramming the 1.x UI onto Snowstorm than it'll be to backport everything to 1.x. Mind you, both 1.x and 2.x's UIs are abortions and ideally things will get better by moving beyond them.

I think that's the problem I've had with the 2.x UI hate... Is Syphilis really THAT much better than Herpes, guys?

I had been using Emergence but for some reason it made me crash too many times and was way too laggy.

Oh come on, people.. Good Devs vs. Bad Devs? They are ALL tainted. They stood there on Emerald Point, members in good standing of a group of criminals who exploited the system, built and used ripper viewers, put in backdoors and special code for their pals (go look at the Onyx code that was leaked, even my grandma can find it), broke into LL's voice system, used external servers to trick LL's servers to give them god mode...

Do you honestly think that any of these Devs are squeaky clean? The hacker crowds don't care about responsibility or rules. It's about what shiny toys they can have for themselves, and fuck anyone else.

Anyone who touches anything these people have written or will write in the future are no better than those poor fools in the Emerald chat who don't give a shit about culpability, history or honesty. Give me my shiny toys.

Emergence may have many backdoors that we haven't found yet. However, I trust Greg to remove those, instead of finding some bullshit way of reverting the change. Plus, last time I checked, Darling Brody had his nuts in a vice.
