I think a lot of people simply don't wish to be 'wrong' about anything. It's similar how people build loyalty to brands. Emerald is a brand, they're just 'better informed' than others by being a part of the brand. That was part of the culture that was developed.

Even if it wasn't so amazingly douchetacular to have an image based upon elitism, people do this every day with what they choose to invest in. There's just some reason why you happen to prefer Brand A over B and most folks like to think they're a good judge of product, character and/or taste, so it's distressing to have it questioned. I suspect that's partially why internet lulz culture exists is because it's a shortcut to saying you don't care about anything and thus can't be placed in that position.

Anyway, sure, ignorant or willfully ignorant.

It's not an outright lie, but weasel wording is in there. They were redistributing llkdu before, got in trouble for it, then brought out emkdu. This would be "no, you aren't special, you can't go back to redistributing our library after you remove yours."

I would use version 2.whatever, before I would use emerald.

Hell, for that matter, I would invite the Woodburys to be estate managers, move Caledon to Zindra and streak the mainland screaming "shangalangadingdong!" as I ran, before I'd use Emerald.

Of course, if others want to use it... go for it.

I support everyone's right to make a personal decision about Emerald, everyone's right to set their automobile on fire, and everyone's right to have a giant shark tank underneath their cheap plywood livingroom floor.

In the end, most Emerald users don't care about the issues, problems or even if they were used as long as they get their shinies. Emerald can be a Copybot viewer tomorrow and still they won't care.

As for those who do care, the alternatives are there.

Philip made a mistake.

He should have banned Emerald preemptively until it meets all the requirements on LL's list. Two weeks without Emerald would have sent a strong message telling everyone that LL means serious business.

Instead, he chose to postpone the final decision. By doing so, he made it clear to Phox that he ultimately won't have the balls to ban Emerald. That's why Phox is now taking another chance at twisting the rules and pushing emkdu into Emerald anyway.

Get the popcorn, there's another e-peen contest in progress. Was Philip's blog post really the Potsdam Declaration for Emerald? Will Emerald really get nuked off the grid?

I doubt it.

2 weeks would also have been enough for about half of the current holdouts to realize that really, they're over it. That's just enough time to go through withdrawal and kick a habit. 2 weeks is enough time for other TPVs faced with sudden influx to get on track with patching to new user demand and stability needs.

Someone needs to put this rabid dog down though... Emerald's continued existence at this point will only serve to further divide the SL community and create irreparable injuries. If LLs understood community management more - they would have smacked it down and taken the hit in one swift shot, and then rebuilt from there. Instead they're giving these hackers time to entrench and launch a counter-offensive.

If you look at some MMOs, there are some very successful ones that in times of crisis with gold sellers/buyers or account hackers have gone as far as -deleting the accounts- of a few hundred thousand in one swift shot. When faced with a rabid dog; you shoot it fast. You don't let it sit there and fester all over everyone.

LLs faced with the fear of losing 10,000 'rage quiters' over a ban of Emerald, is instead choosing to risk 100,000 in the eventual hostile grid they'll be left holding after all of this is over.

Yep. That's about right. SL is a fun hobby for me, but not so fun I want to deal with annoying clients lacking functions I've come to depend on for my fun. If I hadn't switched to emerald way back, I'd probably not be around that much any longer.

And, quite frankly, I wouldn't care as such if it was a copybot viewer, since I wouldn't use it for that. Yes, obviously, it wouldn't be allowed then, so I would have to care in that regard, but for me personally I don't care one bit what the developers were or weren't doing earlier.

I don't feel that I am supporting anything improper they have done or might be doing by using the client since I am not exactly contributing to their "do evil things" fund each time I log in.

It's open source. Every oddity people have complained about seems to get discovered in a day and reported everywhere in Internet time. So, just wait a couple of days on a new release, find out if there's any alleged enormities, and then use it or not at your discretion. Or wait for someone else you trust to produce a binary. I don't see any moral implications in this.

I'll keep using Emerald so long as people I trust say that there's nothing foul in there. When that stops happening, or LL drops the banhammer on the client, I'll move on to whatever client best suits my needs. Until then, it's as reasonable to assume it's safe as it is to suppose any other TPV is safe.

You contributed bandwidth to a distributed denial of service attack.

But I guess you feel comfortable with that as long as you are not the target and don't have to foot the bill, right?

I used Emerald for a long time, and recomended it to people.

I continued to use it even after finding out about the shady past of some of its devs. I gave them the benefit of the doubt, and trusted that they had changed their ways.

I was wrong to put that trust in them, and as a result will not be using that viewer again. I doubt they can regain regain my trust again.

I tried using LL V2 but was turned off by the size of the chat box and lack of built in AO. Imprudence seemed to crash on me about every hour. But the issues with Emerald has shown me that I have to learn to deal with big chat boxes or be patient with Imprudence and try it again.

The biggest lesson learned from this is to check into what you are using, and not just use it because someone recomended it. Shame on me for not checking into it in the first place.
