It should be noted that nobody has any proof for any of this. Until someone finds some, all I see is that Qarl joined the Emerald team.

It's far more possible that Qarl just wanted a viewer to work on that didn't have to meet strict standards of quality. It took ages for them to implement media on a prim in SL, and he had the base for it down ages ago.

He was let go by LL, so I doubt he wants to work directly on their viewer anymore.

Well, they changed the encryption a third time, so... yeah.

I really want to give Imprudence a try, but so far I'm unable to connect at all to SL with it. I keep getting the "Despite our Best Efforts" error. I haven't seen that error in probably a year or more. The viewer preferences seem to be limiting me to PG/General only with it grayed out and no way to change the option, though I thought I'd still be able to log into my own Mature/Moderate parcel? I tried digging through the Imprudence forums for anyone else indicating the same error, but I wasn't able to find anything.

I did, however, see quite a lot of issues people were having and that doesn't really make me feel so comfortable.
Try version 1.3RC1, or the latest weekly build. 1.2.2 should work as well, but anything below 1.3beta3 or 1.2.2 are not TPV compliant and may not be able to connect to the Second Life grid anymore.

Also, if your last location was an adult-rated sim, try specifically setting a known PG sim as your starting location, in lieu of "home" or "last location", until you can log on with Imprudence and set your desired maturity ratings.

Of course, more credible theories have at least a shred of supporting evidence.

Conspiracy theory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Conspiracy theory is a term that originally was a neutral descriptor for any claim of civil, criminal, or political conspiracy. However, it has become largely pejorative and used almost exclusively to refer to any fringe theory which explains an historical or current event as the result of a secret plot by conspirators of almost superhuman power and cunning.

Conspiracy theories are viewed with skepticism by scholars because they are rarely supported by any conclusive evidence and contrast with institutional analysis, which focuses on people's collective behavior in publicly known institutions, as recorded in scholarly material and mainstream media reports, to explain historical or current events, rather than speculate on the motives and actions of secretive coalitions of individuals.

The term is therefore often used dismissively in an attempt to characterize a belief as outlandishly false and held by a person judged to be a crank or a group confined to the lunatic fringe.

Make sure you have it set to log into Second Life...

To me it sounds like you're set to Local Host, with no standalone running.

Note: I will kindly ask bloggers and other forumers, MLers, or blogorumers not to quote or link my post. I am not in an anti-emerald crusade (although obviously upset by what happened) and I want to have nothing to do with it. Also this post is not the best account to cite on the matter (neither the first one, nor the most detailed... and anyway now worthless since the google cache expired).

Thank you very much.

I don't know who made the page like this and to what purpose, but that was really fishy.

Wow that's interesting, I hadn't heard of that.

Judging by how many pages and images it's trying to download while keeping it in a hidden 1x1 pixel frame, it looks like Emerald was attempting a Denial of Service attack on Hazim's blog by overloading his blog with downloads from all the hapless people loading up Emerald to login.

I'm not terribly surprised. They've also tried to spam my email, which I didn't notice until I checked my spam folder.

Then they messed with Vivox's servers to get my voice account disabled, and stalked me to gloat about it when I hadn't even noticed until they kept bugging me to talk on voice.

Then they allegedly got my ISP account to cut off my internet, which I found out about from people telling me Phox was gloating about it. I'm still using my internet, so I'm assuming someone else's was disabled.

Now my website that I never use or update is being attacked, and I'm the last person to know or care. If they can't even take down a dreamhost hosted site, they're the bunch of assclowns I've always known they were.

Modsys is always good for a lol.

EDIT: Anyways, I guess I'll add a referrer blocker to the .htaccess or something stupid like that.

Kids trying to pull shit like this on me is what I live for, why would I want to make them go away? I will speak with their ISP about it, however.

Total number of requests referred by that page: 16,541,673 (huh, I didn't even notice lag when I was messing with a script on the site a couple days ago)

They used the images that proved they were disclosing private info about their users to launch a DDoS attack against me using their users' bandwith? Nice touch, actually.

Where is Chalice, anyways?

You're not kidding about the "lot of traffic" part. Adding up all the images loaded here:
Quote:
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/emerald-explore-sounds.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/emerald-windows-disclosure.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/emerald-mac-disclosure.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/emerald-linux-disclosure.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/imgsearch-v0.0.2.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/FRIENDLY%20GREETINGS.jpg"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/inertia-test.jpg"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/inertia-login.jpg"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/inuyertia.jpg"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/neillife.jpg"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/background-v2.png"></iframe>
<iframe src="http://iheartanime.com/images/background.png"></iframe>

That comes to about 1 megabyte downloaded from Hazim's site every time someone opens a copy of Emerald just from the images. Plus it loads a dynamically-generated page on his website a bunch of times to try and consume server CPU time as well.

Edit: Also, remember that the Emerald developers managed to bring their own website to its knees a bunch of times just from the normal, intended requests made for its login page. We're talking a fairly serious DDoS here.

Conspiracy theories are always fun so I'll add fuel to the flames.

qLab Blog Archive and a linden is slain
and a linden is slain

(007Q code name)

"well, linden lab cut me loose today. they’ve been hinting at it ever since the layoffs last month. try as i might i wasn’t able to change their minds. honestly, i’m completely baffled at the decision, as are all my coworkers (and my boss, and…)
i mean, it wasn’t because i do a bad job. by all accounts, i do a FANTASTIC job. i do the work of a hundred men, i work miracles, etc.
and it’s not that i’m super expensive - my salary was slightly below average for my position in san francisco. and when i switched from employee to contractor, i cost the lab even less.
and it can’t be because i’m a contractor and not an employee. that cannot be the reason, because (a) i never wanted to switch to a contractor but i was forced to when the lab screwed up, and (b) when i did switch and was worried the switch might endanger me in any future layoffs - my exec assured me i’d be judged by performance and not status.
so it’s a mystery.
and damn, i gotta say, that sucks. because i really do love second life. SL is the coolest thing on the planet - the world we’ve all built is literally incredible - beyond belief.
but maybe things happen for a reason - and maybe i can do more good for SL on the outside than the inside.
let’s see."

Normally an NDA would not allow this kind of disclosure.. and especially not allow him to work with another viewer.
