Oooh can I add to the conspiracy theory? <dons tinfoil beret>

Qarl is to head up the data mining operations at Modsys so LL can more easily do paid for target marketing per their survey a few months back.

Here's my theory:
  • Linden Lab can't roll out mesh as long as Emerald has no mesh support.
  • Linden Lab can't add mesh support to Emerald for reasons laid out in their third-party viewer policy.
Solution: Assign the job to a contractor. Enter Qarl.

/me adds to the Conspiracy theory.

Qarl had drinks with Philip over the weekend, and this plot was hatched.

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

If LL had reason to be concerned for the safety of their customers' accounts then exactly this would happen:

1. Simultaneous forced password resets for everyone in SL (At least for those detected having used emerald since last password change) and Emerald blocked at login.
2. Blog post explaining why.
3. Informing former emerald users of other alternative viewers.
4. A lot of people would be angry and threatening to quit. Then they go get another viewer and log in sans jiggly tits.
The end.

I like this reason more than my own. And I would not be surprised if Qarl independently decided to do this (if possible).

With MS looking shaky but also needing to catch up with Viewer 2 code base things must be a bit troubling over there and the help would be welcomed.

Meanwhile at Qarl's site he is going a little insane.... www.qarl.com - the home of Karl Stiefvater

Crap! Hope that is a joke.

hmmmm. Maybe Frac is half-adopting the old libsl model of paying Qarl to fix some specific bugs? That would not be the same as hiring a full time software engineer and could be doable under available funds? If that is the case then I find it kind of admirable.

Now that LGPL makes a SLUniverse plugin possible you could hand out it to SLUniverse peeps for inworld use. And whenever anyone deserves it you'll be able to send a stabby bot to hunt them down whereever they may be. Not only in SL but all over the OpenSim intergridz also. Stab them to pieces and do other stuff to them even, and then give them a "I wuz stabbed by Sluni Verse" tee-shirt.

Stabby Bot would probably be quite busy though. I think most every regular here would certainly want one. Be quite the fashion statement even in some places. Perhaps an automatic post here when Stabby does the dreadful deed so the observers could make book on the next victim.

Maybe different coloured tees depending on the level of stabbiness applied. Emerald green or Onyx black for example. I'd probably be in the running for a Taupe stabbing for tl;dr postings that waste your bandwidth. Oooh! maybe even a "I made SLuni Verse fall asleep" tee-shirt.

Although the part about Frac releasing some bounty money to entice Qarl to help fix some problems as outlined by others here may still be a possibility. I am sure a couple thousand dollars would come in handy right now and is less then what Frac payed to get the bot name registered. Plus it has the ulterior motive of giving him a PR boost when he needed it.

Let's go a step farther and theorize that this was a last minute deal and was a surprise windfall for Qarl and this is why he was not aware of the MS accountability problem? EDIT TO ADD: Plus I also can not really see Qarl doing this as a "screw you" to Linden Lab. You do not burn bridges until at least after you are gainfully employed again.

EDIT TO ADD MORE(Getting confused now) Plus, Qarl's only response to such a big announcement so far is this

My own conspiracy theory...

Once upon a time LL created a few bots to test a few fake hotspots, and either used Emerald code or disguised their bots to look like Emerald. It might have been humor or admiration or deception or just careless programming with borrowed code.

Anyway, fast forward a couple years, and these bots have multiplied like rabbits while the original coder isn't there anymore and nobody realizes they're identifying themselves as Emerald.

As I mentioned across the street, I'll believe something has happened when Qarl announces that the Kakadu license has been transferred to him.

Since they couldn't get Tofu, Qarl would be the only sensible choice for any JPEG2000-related development. So if anybody else retains that license, it would mean there are more bodies buried in emkdu.

Well Fractured could have already killed an uprising in his own forum this morning if he would have made an announcement saying that he was planning on doing something like this....... and he did not.

Someone finally broached the emkdu question there and is not letting him off the hook with the half assed answer they received so far.

That someone would be me, then ^^.
I really hope we finally gain some more transparency as a result... but I don't have high hopes as it is not my first rant on these forums.

Meh, the dude said he would love to stay involved in SL and more than likely coding for SL, what better way than to get involved in the most visable open source viewer.

Of course being open source, I'm betting it's a 'stay involved' project - not a 'new job'... sure some bounties are fun to get here and there for projects that do that (very popular on some of the retro OS projects I keep up with), but still - a hobby. Someone with his creds will have no problem rounding up a REAL job in either the game industry or the film industry.

As for LL connections - I'm guessing that the lions share of the things they hired him for they believe are wrapped up, or close enough to wrap up that they don't feel they need to keep him there. (whether they do or don't ACTUALLY need him there is another story - one I wouldn't be privy to - just that they don't believe him indispensable).

Making the announcement right after LGG left... simple: PR - positive spin.

LL's teen grid announcements et. al. at SLCC - coincidence.

Tin foil hat fail - occams razor win.
