It's pretty much what Spike Linden told me, in response to a ticket I put in last year, asking if I would be breaking ToS by installing one (I wasn't going to but wanted to see what the reply was):
Quote:
Thank you for your ticket, we generally don't check all content for approvals, as I'm sure you can imagine the number of items created.
You need to take a look at the item and make your own best judgement. Keep in mind about the information collected and how it is used (disclosing peoples alts can get you into trouble).
The trouble is, as far as I can see, that zFire isn't purporting to disclose people's alts in world. He's doing it on a website, which is no more against ToS than is posting a conversation here.

zFire's ads used to say “You will be amazed how many people you thought you knew who turn out to be the SAME person!” on XStreetSL

There must be something they can do surely. I mean the system is abusing their customers and he is also using the grid to do it. It might be stored and accessed on an external server, but the viewer, sim and LSL are being used to do the capturing.

I can't believe that no one has ARd him for this before, but I'm willing to give it a go.

I know for a fact that his system purports to identify an alt of mine. Any suggestions what my AR should say? Or shall I take it up with Live Chat?

I would wait and see if LL does anything this week first. I have a feeling any AR's against zFire will be getting thrown in a pile called "RedZone AR's" at the moment. There will be 100's of them.

Actually you have done exactly what was needed. Guaranteed grid saturation now that it has been adopted by Phoenix and it will be adopted by the rest of the TPV's. Once people start using it then the word will spread that RedZone is now worthless. (It always was worthless against it's purported targets, the copybotters knew to turn off media back when CDS came out. But now the customers will learn the same) There will be some die hard loyalist customers that will continue to use it. The same as !Quit being heard around the grid for YEARS afterwards, but all they will do is screw themselves.

Now it does not matter what LL does or does not do.

Why don't fuckin LL secure the platform they are providing?
How hard can it be?

Granted I don't know shit from shinolla about encrypted hashes and whatnot,
nor about the fine details of open source.

But why cant LL get together with trusted tpv providers
and have some super secret masonic type encrypted handshake
between the viewer and the sever that is proprietary?

If you're hoping that this would stop copybotters, I have just one word for you: proxy.

Like I said, I don't know shit about the higher workings of encryption.
But how would a proxy have an effect between what the viewer and server
say to each other before connection?

ETA: Nothing is gonna stop a determined copybotter with screen capture and the like

It would sit between the viewer and server, and simply pass that kind of thing through unaltered.

Yeah, in TPV land we have it covered. There will still be a vulnerability as long as Snowstorm is wide open.

I really didn't want to have to release a patch because of this and the fact that it is a TOS issue and once the viewer is secured the TOS issue will go ignored by LL. I held off all week waiting for LL to at least say something. A brief post hidden in a sea of JIRA comments was not really good enough.

I just hope now that LL fixes Snowstorm because I want to actually see mesh

It doesn't matter how secure the connection is, all content has got to be decoded on your own machine so the viewer can actually render it. If it can be rendered, it can be copied. If it can't be rendered... well, your Second Life experience may disappoint.

Everquest and Warcraft have all that, and people still cheat at the games, rip the contents of the GPU and core and use that to figure out where stuff is or run macros to do impossible attacks. Valve even puts a rootkit in your computer to keep you from running debugging tools they know about to keep you from doing that. And they have all failed.

Linden Lab doesn't have a fraction of their resources.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at. It seems he's banned some of the anonymouse proxies people are using when posting links here, so I had to use another proxy to visit the site... but I just found the same old train wreck.

Looks like zFire finally got around to banning Anonymouse from accessing his forum. Pity there aren't hundreds of other proxies out there...

...oh, wait.

I don't suppose there are any Comcast based proxies? I'm liking the idea of him IP mask banning himself from his own forum.

the average person will get sick of the pop ups. Look at how many people complain at blue pop ups at shops. Those that are wary will simply not use media or cookies already.

Sorry but I dont see much fixed here even if it was a good attempt.
I mean a stream i regularly list to is http://uplink.duplexfx.com:8064/
which is a legit radio, not exactly user friendly.

Sure they have a choice but a lot will just switch it off as they wont make head or tail of it

Did you put it in the whitelist?

It is suppose to pop up when it doesn't know a domain, thats how it works. It can't think for you and we don't really need yet another database.

There is an option under "Audio & Video" in preferences to turn it off.

It's the best we can do, any other solution requires LL and TOS enforcement.

EDIT:

I don't know if you have actually tried using it or not, but if you have a url you know is legit and use all the time you just click whitelist and it will never pop up for that url again.
