20 milion sign-ups

Total SL sign ups to date are 19,987,065 and they are growing at around 11,000 per day so they should break the 20,000,000 barrier in the next 36 hours

I wonder if anyone at the Lab will notice

Wow ...20 Million - That's a lot of Residents/Alts/Bots/Copybotters/Churn/Conversion failures {delete as suits your own agenda}

I can remember that - there used to be a counter out at waterhead and we'd slope past to see how close it was. It was actually exciting! lol my don't times change.

I was at waterhead last saturday afternoon and there were probably 2 other people there. sigh.

Does anyone know how to make that seagull game work? I went into mouseview and couldn't work out what to do next, looking at the sign did nothing and the only bird I could see was on the help notecard giver - which did give a notecard but it didn't help.

I know, I really do need to get another life.

What I don't understand is, if there's 11,000 new people a day, why does the concurrency and # of active accounts stay flat. Are there 11,000 people leaving per day too? Seems pretty fishy.

I don't really think it sounds that fishy at all. I double very many new accounts remain active, and meanwhile previously active accounts are constantly getting either bored or fed-up with SL.

LL needs to seriously rethink their entire approach if they ever want to get those retention rates out of the gutter.

And there's always those people who dump their old accounts and make a "new beginning" with an alt. So SL loses one active account as the person transitions to another.

And of course the number of people getting banned, and creating new throw away alts.

True, the ban thing seems to be in overdrive lately, if the SL forums are any indication. But still, 11,000 just seems like an awful lot per day.

It could be 11,000 new alts per day. Probably hardly anyone logs in with more than one account at a time, so new alts won't increase concurrency.

That is a lot of Alts!

Truthfully I think a great deal of the sign ups are new, curious people who run away in fright once they realize the big job they have ahead of them for fitting into SL.

I wonder how many of them are in world because of "Hot Tub Time Machine". lol

The concept of SL is fantastic, it sells itself. Unfortunately, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.

There are a lot of things LL needs to fix, improve, or completely replace when it comes to SL. Unfortunately for them, and us, they do not seem to recognize even a single one of these issues for the problems they present. I can think of maybe a dozen issues that seriously cripple SL's ability to draw people in which were problems when I joined SL in 2005 and which LL has not even considered addressing right up to this very moment.

Unless that changes, unless LL gains the ability to recognize these problems and begin addressing them in a professional manner, it's seriously no shocking surprise that so many people check out SL and then never come back.

There are some products being sold on XStreet that require a steady flow of new accounts in order to maintain the illusion of being useful. I would not be surprised if a considerable part of those 11,000 accounts per day were created automatically through RegAPI.

So, peak concurrency this year looks like it was in February, a little over 80,000, and has trailed off since then, yet signups continue to increase at a steady clip of 11,000 a day (and only a tiny minority of those accounts are likely bots), which seems to indicate that SL has a negative retention rate at this point. The more people sign up, the fewer end up logging on. I am not implying this is cause-and-effect- it's just really fascinating how many thousands of new people must log in every day and go WTF IS THIS? And run screaming back to Facebook.

It does seem odd yes but I'm going to ignore logic and cheer the 20M mark anyway lol

I've got issues with SL/LL just like everyone else, but above all, I still love SL and want to see it thrive.
