Second Life doing a good job at becomming like Facebook

Facebook: As Unpopular as Airlines, Cable Companies & the IRS

Quote:
A report released this morning by the American Consumer Satisfaction Index and ForeSee Results states it as plainly as can be stated: "Despite being the most popular website in America, consumers don't like Facebook". The world's largest social networking site, which boasts more than 500 million users worldwide, now occupies the dismal depths where airlines, cable companies, IRS e-filers, pineapple on pizza and those who TYPE IN ALL CAPS reside.
And LL wants to follow their style with Viewer 2 and privacy? It's working

Is that in the same way we all hate McDonalds, and yet everyone seems to eat there?

The "I Like ReadWriteWeb" Facebook app beside the article was a nice touch.

When I started in SL in 2006 at the beginning of the hype cycle - SL had um, 6000 concurrency.

It was not big. It only grew when the floodgates were opened to no payment info on file. That helped a lot to get new people interested and using SL, but sorry, even IMVU has higher concurrency than SL does. SL does not even belong in the same sentence with MySpace or Facebook.

"Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad."

"I call it purring, not growling," said Alice.

"Call it what you like," said the Cat.

But he points out that the things consumers don't like are not intrinsic to Facebook itself.

"...our research shows that privacy concerns, frequent changes to the website, and commercialization and advertising adversely affect the consumer experience."

I think when LL said they wanted to be more like facebook, they meant in the social networking sense, which people still enjoy. I don't. But a lot of my friends do.

When I think of Facebook, I think of...

Privacy concerns, frequent changes to the website (at least the way your information is shown to everyone unless you continuously request to keep things private), and commercialization and advertising.

Oh and some social B.S.

I don't like Facebook, am not a member, and certainly not likely to spend money there
I like SL, log in virtually every day, and spend several thousands a year
I think I am typical of many verteran SL avis
And SL wants to be like Facebook?????
SL is #1 in its own special niche, why be number 20-something in some other niche?

My point was... it's hard to call Facebook a failure when it is the #1 visited site on the web and has 500 million users.

Perhaps a failure the way Attila the Hun was a failure, who also had a pretty despised operation that eventually did fall apart. But he did pretty well for himself, up until his death.

Geocities had the distinction of being one of the most popular sites on the Web once.

Is Facebook actually profitable?

They have the personal information and demographic information of half a billion people, down to where they live and what kind of soft drink they like. I'm pretty sure they're profitable. If they're not, it's only because they haven't sold that info yet to the highest bidder.

Yeah, I know that. That's what's getting them sued too

For why? "Not reading the terms of service" is not a valid claim.

And it shouldn't. It isn't MS or FB. It's not supposed to be.

Why can't those idiots on Battery Street realize that, and let SL be what it is?

It's not. I totally agree. SL has a nice niche in virtual worlds that is totally different from Facebook. But I think Philip kinda got that in the last stuff I've read from him, so maybe there's some hope.

So for you the only mark of success is profit. (Note how I said nothing about Facebook being profitable - because I don't know.)

Well, if you don't want to end up like Geocities, I guess. It's the poster child of being popular on the web and never actually gaining profitability, and thus not existing anymore (except Japan). Although the guys who sold out to Yahoo did pretty nice, I suppose. But I'm not really a fan of the IPO/sell the company before the money runs out - model.

Not existing anymore is mostly what I would prefer to avoid

Geocities died because better alternatives were able to move in quickly (Ok, with sites like MySpace, "better* is relative), along with blogging taking its place in a number of ways.

What services are prepped to become the next (better) Facebook?
