Laughs and sneers in LOLCat

"Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see, a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. Now I growl when I'm pleased, and wag my tail when I'm angry. Therefore I'm mad." "I call it purring, not growling," said Alice. "Call it what you like," said the Cat. |

Mmm secret squirrel
| Well, I think I'm going to close this thread now, I just want to say a few things before I do... I worked on PhoxSL and gave a viewer containing exploits and crashers to some of my friends in late 08-early 09. At that point Jcool and I had been friends for a few months, and he was working on a new crasher asset, offered to add me to Vlife if I would create a working sound crash; I did, and was invited, joining Jcool, Thomas, and Tyken. We worked on Vlife for a while, released one version, then Thomas was removed following some drama involving his opinion somehow being more important than the opinions of all of the other developers combined. At some point after this, jay passed SVN hosting over to me, this is when the posted dump begins. A month passed, during which time Zwagoth was added and provided a fix for the sound crash, then created the 4kb crasher mentioned earlier in order to demonstrate the vulnerability of our previous fix; a little later we released what was to be the final vlife update. (August 2009) At some point Thomas was added again, after making a few promises that we wouldn't end up with another situation like last time, we kept working on a new version, and eventually started to lose interest in the project. We kicked Thomas, and a few weeks later (late November 2009) pretty much all development died off as we worked on Emerald more. Some time in December after all the drama over Xfer and the Notecard exploit, (Both of which people who currently compromise the Onyx team had reported long before Neil started to talk about them on his blog) we decided we should work more actively to fix those things before they became public and did so much damage. That's when Onyx was born, Cryogenic, having had given up any illegitimate viewer projects since the summer was deemed an ideal candidate, so he was invited. At this point the Onyx team was made up of Myself, Jcool, Tyken, Zwagoth and Cryogenic, at first not all that much was done except report the exploits we knew about at the time, submitted crash fixes and asset IDs of old crashers we were aware of as well as binaries for a few of the illegitimate clients available at the time. The Onyx viewer is just one of the tools we created use when debugging malicious viewers, it was built on top of Vlife because it was an ideal starting point: It already contained the fixes and reproduction code for a large number of exploits. We also have the Onyx proxy, and several different versions of Onyx bots with various forms of automation code. Over time the project evolved a little bit and we started picking up other malicious clients, breaking their login authentication and going through them for any exploits we could find, we figured out how they worked using proxy applications and testing and reported whatever we found, this went on and continues today. Cryogenic was kicked some months ago due to concerns about him having shown an exploit to a friend of his who went on to reproduce as well as a viewer private viewer he seemed to be working on. I can't remember when this happened, probably mid march 2009? He hadn't worked on Onyx in a long time, but when he did, he was responsible for reporting several exploits that were eventually fixed as a result. Over time, there have been other people who've contributed to the project, either via patch or just by sharing knowledge, but this is a complete list of everyone who's had access to any of our code. I think that's a fairly complete history. Oops: Almost forgot Skills; A week or two before Cryogenic was removed we invited Skills, CDS had been public for a few weeks at the time and it seemed the projects were complimentary so we shared knowledge and ideas, which resulted in better detection for CDS and new data to be shared with Linden Lab concerning malicious viewer statistics. Ok now it's done If anyone has any other questions, send me an IM in-world because this thread is making me dizzy.

Some specific points: #9 - Emerald has nothing to do with CDS or Onyx, other than sharing a few devs and webhosting space. #10- Assuming Zwagoth is a forum mod or admin there -- big deal. I look at IP addresses on the forums I mod. It's part of being an effective moderator. #12- I guess this falls under the whole "honor among thieves" thing, and all that. But there seems to be a difference: He's apparently moved on and is trying to clean up, whereas you appear stuck in the past, unable to let go or move on. | |
