Emerald Site Security Broken! Data Mining Shocks Linden Lab!!! | The Alphaville Herald

Just adding more fuel to the "ZOMG EMERALD IS TEH EVIL" fire.

I will abstain from commenting at the moment since I am clearly a biased observer.

I don't (as usual) understand all that transpired -- why was Hazim Gazov banned?

Facebook 2.0? I think so...

I'd be surprised if LL isn't doing something like this as well, though. They have quite the cash cow of data just waiting to be scraped up.

Wow, I know Arabella Steadham, she actually has a plot on Emerald Point, I wonder what she would think of this

Arabella is very well aware of what goes on. Why do you think she posted this entry a while back? THIS IS WHY WOODBURY WERE BANNED Arabella's Amblings

It doesn't make sense -- why would Lindens express concern then ban the guy that tipped them off?

I think he was part of the Woodbury ban. This thread comes up, searching for the name:

Farewell Woodbury

Hazim Gazov is an alias a member of Woodbury used to make the Lindens aware of this information. The Lindens knew of that name's past association with the Woodbury group; the rest was not hard to figure out.

She was one of the users who had logged into the datamine application to look up personal information.

EDIT: Also, my main (Hazim Gazov) was banned in 2007 during the original woodbury massban.

Could it be the same reason that LL was working with WU about new sims one day then less than a week later they got the banbomb?

Just thought I should note, this will likely be a series of articles. This is hardly the tip of the iceberg.

List of people who used the datamine:

Jcool410 : Fractured Crystal
arabella : Arabella Steadham
chalice : Chalice Yao
lordgreggreg : LordGregGreg Back
skills : Skills Hak
phox : Lonely Bluebird
zwagoth : Zwagoth Klaar
LBH : ???

No idea who LBH is. Peeking at the rest of the list, yeah, the names are correct, tho no idea if everybody actually -used- the thing or not.

'Datamine' was pretty much a sillyness that Fractured set up in Emerald Point, using land media. His sim, his rules (he soley pays for that one), and I didn't like it, but I used it twice or trice during a series of alts copybotting right in the sim. I don't know if everybody on the list used it, and how often.
To my knowledge the thing ironically isn't even linked to the whole Onyx thingamajic that's going on. (Onyx items are kept away from the ModSys server aside of the Onyx homepage, as not all server admins are involved in Onyx)

What is interesting is here we have a twice banned WU member blowing a whistle on some documentation that he "acquired" concerning private documentation about MS and this happens RIGHT after the main SL boards are majorly fished with usernames and pws actually posted openly on that forum. Yeah... someone is getting into systems that they are not supposed to do and it's aimed at LL and those they think LL is favoring lately. Now who oh who could this possibly be? -ponders- Who could possibly have it in for both LL AND ModularSystems. And who is it that thinks they can pull fast ones while giving everyone this utterly sincere we did nothing wrong spiel?

And you didn't find anything wrong with the fact that they've been logging data on users' names, IP addresses, locations, et al?

I'm pretty sure that's A) A violation of the TPV policy and B) A huge no-no in general. This is sort of a big fucking deal, Chalice. But I'm glad you only used it once or twice. Or thrice.

1) That wasn't me
2) I don't give a rat's ass about the passwords to your yiffy foxfur account
3) It's "phished"
4) Despite it all, LL is actually more competent when it comes to security than emerald is
5) I'm not going for any sort of "utterly sincere we did nothing wrong spiel" as you put it. The information is there, do what you want with it, other than that, what the tits do you want from me?

a) The TPV applies to clients. Datamine wasn't part of a client. Simply sim land media to my knowledge, no bots involved. (Scary, eh?)
b) Yeah. I said that I didn't like it , and that's what makes me kind of indifferent about there being an article about it. Well, aside of possible negative effects on Emerald popularity, but quite frankly I've been so numbed down by constant negativity about it, be it warranted or not, that by now I've become apathic to that matter. I hardly keep track of any Emerald/ModSys/Onyx/whatever thread these days.

Well... You could think of Emerald as an ex lover that cheated on you numerous times and talked negativly about you behind your back! :D

Jesus fucking Christ you're dense.

ALL WEBSERVERS LOG THE EXACT SAME SHIT BY DEFAULT FOR DEBUGGING PURPOSES AND FOR TRACKING DDOS ATTACKS.

I'm struggling to see what the value of this database was, other than, perhaps circumstantially determining whose alt was whose.

If that's really useful, I'm failing to see how. Most people can guess alts fairly effectively just from how they type, dress, when they come around and so forth.

Why make such a database? Other than, because it was possible? What was the point of it, or was there any?
