Tips and Tricks for 2.0

please please.

Each 2.0 thread becomes a huge and daunting task to stay caught up on if all I am looking for is why all my shoes look like crap or why I can't put anything into the favorites folder.

The "Quick Start Guide" LL made for the viewer makes me all so functional information is appreciated.

I started this same exact thread a week or so ago, and it sank like a stone, but I'm willing to jump on this one and see if we can keep it going.

The single best tip I have for using 2.0 is adding the Starlight skin.

Viewer Skins/Starlight - Second Life Wiki

The second is to take the time to go through the Preferences options and carefully select the ones you want (or experiment), because they also can make significant improvements to your enjoyment of the veiwer.

Thanks Beebo. I swear I have the worst time finding things about 2.0 and totally missed your previous thread.

I am finding I like how group chats are in the official viewer, but that is still the only thing so far. Even with plain chat Kirstens seems to waste alot of space.

I'll add my request here then for any tweaks or whatever to get a dark-on-light color scheme. The current viewer (even with Starlight) does not seem to have an option for that, one I've used forever on 1.2x. Any tips appreciated, and meanwhile I'm searching for it.

This reverse color option is one that would have to be skinned, and so far no one has created a skin to do that. So it's entirely feasible to do this with 2.0, just no one has done it yet.

Sorry your thread "sank" Beebo. I'm glad there is one going now, at least.

I love that you can drag LM into the favorites bar so I don't have to search each time I go to my favorites that I visit often. It's very simple, just click on the landmark in your inventory and drag it up to the bar.

I know, it's a little thing and most probably know it, but just in case...)

Thanks, Beebo. Someone else already asked for it on the Starlight Wiki talk page, and I seconded it. A light color scheme would be a big help for me and Atia

This 2nd round of Starlight (to match 2.0.1) included some optional enhancements, so it wouldn't surprise me to see this kind of variation added to the package in some way. It would be lovely to have an interface option for adding skins, but fortunately adding the skins is relatively easy.

Okay, it's easy for those people who are computer savvy enough to understand they have this thing called a C: drive and that there are folders on it, and you can drill down to sub folders too and drop these things called files into them.

ETA: I'm posting the installation instructions here, so people can judge for themselves how comfortable they are skinning 2.0 with Starlight.

Viewer Skins/Starlight - Second Life Wiki

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The zip file contains the custom colours, textures and xml files that will modify the standard SecondLife Viewer 2.0 interface. Download the zip file and unzip it using a suitable utility

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WINDOWS OR LINUX USERS

1. Log out of Second Life Viewer 2.0 (if logged on).
2. Go to the \skins directory of the directory you use for Viewer 2.0 - this is usually under \Program_Files\Windows\SecondLifeViewer2.
3. Rename sub-directory 'default' to 'default_backup'.
4. Add the 'starlight' folder to the \skins directory and rename 'starlight' to 'default'.
5. To uninstall simply delete the 'default' sub-directory and rename 'default_backup' back to 'default' again.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAC USERS

1. This will create a folder called "starlight", but this folder contains another folder with the same name. It's this second nested folder you will need to drag to your Second Life Viewer 2/Resources/skins folder (explained below).
2. Find the Second Life Viewer 2 application in you Applications folder.
3. Right click on the Second Life Viewer 2 application icon. You will get a menu.
4. Choose "Show Package Contents" from that menu.
5. Open the "Resources" folder and scroll down until you see the "skins" folder.
6. Make sure you are not actually running Second Viewer 2 as you do this.
7. Rename the "default" folder to "default_backup".
8. Drag the nested "starlight" folder (the one inside the other "starlight" folder which was created when you unzipped the file you downloaded) into the "skins" folder.
9. Rename the "starlight" folder to "default"
10. To uninstall simply delete the "default" sub-directory and rename "default_backup" back to "default" again.

Does anyone know where the voice chat toggle key setting is in 2.0? I cannot find it for the life of me. I know how to turn on voice chat, but I can't find the setting for which key to use for push to talk.

OK - here's one that may tic me off. I've read about Search being even worse than before, but at least I used to be able to keep the search screen up, and have it remember exactly what page of my search I was on once I teleported somewhere.

Now it seems that I search, I land on page 3 of the listings, I pick something and teleport, and the search screen is closed. When I open it again, I am back on the first page. Is there some trick to have it stay open, or at least return to the last selection? This is very inconvenient, to say the least

I get the feeling that we have lots of questions, but little to no answers. Awww well...

Anyway, does anyone know of a fix to stop the flying mode after standing up from a chair, poseball, seat?

I also seem to have a problem to keep media from playing. Despite switching off autoplay in preferences and repeatedly pressing the stop button in the menu, videos and music streams tend to start over every few minutes.

Ok, I get that 2.0 wasn't meant to go backwards to 1.23 in terms of switching between viewers. But shouldn't there be some communication between versions of 2.0?

I tried again to like the official viewer and installed the latest one. They still do group chat good, and my preferences stayed the same. Other than that... I was wearing an outfit from the "my outfits" folder when I logged off Kirstens. The official one gave me new shoes, and the whole Ruth look after several minutes of being a cloud and my tag saying ...loading...

My inventory is bloated. It seems like 2.0 counts stuff twice which doesn't help. What are good ways to organize inventory where I won't have my lost and found full of weird body parts? I really don't change my shape, skin, or eyes so I don't care to have that linked in every single outfit folder.

I haven't had Kirstens give me the random body parts like the official one does. Now that I went back after the official viewer I keep having body parts flash quickly as being Ruthed whenever I change clothes.

Not to be a thread nudge, but it would be great if this thread did not devolve into another 2.0 hate fest.

I hadn't intended it that way, I swear. Part of it is I am curious not in a suspecting it was created as a drinking game (make something functional=2 drinks, try again), but in a why does it do that kind of way. The random body part issue seemed to be from a new install as the flashes in Kirstens stopped and I wasn't Ruthed going back to the other 2.0.

Some more questions in need for an answer / solution:

How do you disable automatically viewing accepted inventory offers?

How do you avoid getting unwanted landmarks after clicking SLURLs?

Does anyone know where the 'Interests' information can be found on the profiles using 2.0? I'm not too worried about the 'I want to' and 'Skills' parts so much (though it would be nice to know where they are if they still exist in 2.0), but I would like to know if where the 'Languages' profile info can now be found. Any ideas anyone?

"Outfits" is a new concept entirely which 1.23 can't interpret. The beauty of outfits is that they are NOT copies of existing items, they're just pointers to the items in your Inventory, and that includes shape, skin, hair, attachements, what have you. They're a complete snapshot of what you were wearing at that time.

When you go back to 1.23, the outfit pointers are meaningless and the viewer has no information on what you're wearing, which includes what shape and skin you're wearing, not just clothes.

In order to take advantage of this feature, I'd pretty much have to completely dismantle my current extremely OCD wardrobe collection of nested folders (3 levels or more deep). But oh, I'm soo tempted because outfits can make use of non-copy clothing (the bane of my fashion existence).

Yet Kirsten's is a 2.0 based viewer and thus should be able to deal with outfits.
I'm actually surprised that it doesn't in that case, personally, I had the opposite effect that various items wouldn't rez or attach in LL's 2.0, but after logging out and back in to Kirsten's, everything looked perfectly fine.

Just to be absolutely sure that it's not a problem on your client side , Melodie, double- and triplecheck that your cache locations (Preferences > Setup) for LL and KL point to different folders instead of sharing one location.

I'm going to bite the bullet and install the latest V2 and Emerald. I want to avoid some of the problems people have had with the cache and the data folders. How do I set things up so that neither viewer pulls from the other's files? I have plenty of hard drive space, so that's not an issue. I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. If you need anything else, just ask

Once V2 is installed I'm also going to try one of the skins out there in hopes that it will help with the headaches and nausea I've experienced. Will report back on that!

Hope the description of what I want to do makes sense, and a big thank you to anyone that can help.

Some people belief that it's better to install Emerald first and then 2.0, others say the opposite... rule of thumb, the most recently installed viewer should be the one you want to be associated with opening SLURLs.

Once installed, carefully set different cache locations, Preferences > Setup for 2.0 and Preferences > Network for Emerald. After running either viewer for the second or third time, make sure and check if the path is still correctly set.

I haven't tried it, but if you have several partitions on your hard drive, you could try installing the viewers to different partitions, along with their cache paths. No idea if that will make a difference.

You will automatically run into issues if you switch to and fro, so be prepared to quickly change your outfit if you login with either viewer. As described above, Emerald can't deal with 2.0's new way of handling outfits and either one will revert to previously worn looks.

I'd say that you should go straight for the skins before even running 2.0. It's a huge difference.
