This is important enough to warn people about.

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using your SIN or your passport number, and in fact, it is probably illegal for them to do so under Canada's privacy act.

Check for yourself if you don't believe me:

SIN: 1-800-206-7218 (Option 3 for SIN)
Passport Canada: 1-800-567-6868

Integrity CANNOT VERIFY YOUR AGE using a Manitoba driver's licence (although they would be able to using an Ontario driver's licence number alone, apparently your birth date is embedded within your number).

In short, for most Canadians THERE IS NO CANADIAN IDENTIFICATION NUMBER that allows SL/Integrity to verify your age. NOT ONE. Their asking for these numbers is only a way to get these numbers from you, possibly for data mining.

Thanks Quip, thought so. I won't be verifying anyway as I don't have a DL or a passport. Nor do I feel like giving my SSN to Linden Labs.

And I'm not the only one who's figured this out. This was posted to the SL forums thread on Canadian age verification.

"Hi I am a Canadian and have been informed (for reasons other than SL) that I am NOT allowed to divulge Canadian Passport, Canadian Citizenship Card information, Social Insurance Number (RCMP recently spoke to this on CBC) or driver license information to ANYONE other than a Canadian government agency. Besides, I dont want to jeopardize my country's security (however small the risk) for a game."

Please, pass the word on to your Canadian friends. If SL/Integrity want any of these numbers, then it is NOT for age verification purposes. The next step is to get the news media involved. I have a buddy at the CBC who can probably direct this story to the right ears.

I just off the phone with my buddy at the CBC, and when he heard about SL's new age-verifiction scheme and what informatio they were asking Canadians for, he hit the roof.

Said that it was "absolutely" illegal to ask for this info to verify people, and that it was an open door to identity theft.

And he asked me to write an email with all the details and send it to him at the CBC.

Giving your passport info out seems like such an incredibly risky thing to do. SIN less so but still not a good idea. I wasn't going to bother with verifying any of my accounts anyways.

I wonder how much of SL I won't have access to without being age verified.

i just went through an identity theft, with a mortgage company, some stupid person who worked their stole peoples information, mine being one of them, i never want to go through this again ever.

They are being denied because Integrity CANNOT use Canadian's SIN, passport number, or (in most cases) driver's licence number to age-verify. All these are government agencies that do not provide ANY information to ANY third party non-governmental sites.

In other words, there is NO way for Integrity to send back a yes-or-no response using these numbers.

BUT, you still entered those numbers into the field, and God knows where they're stored and for how long. And it's attached to your credit card number via your avatar name, if you are a premium SL user.

If there is ever ANY evidence that our information was used this way, the shit storm and lawsuits will be epic.

I was told in person at a Linden Office Hours attended by Robin, Daniel and Philip that the LL contract with Integrity expressly forbids sharing any of the data they collect -- even with their parent company, Aristotle.

There's a lot to dislike about the methods they've chosen, but I doubt that data mining is one of them.

Have any Canadians tried leaving that field blank? The system checks your name and address first and in concierge beta was quite happy to verify people without any information in the field that asks for a SIN/Passport Number/Driving Licence, I just left the field blank and didn't select any of the two choices I had in the dropdown.

However I'm not Canadian!
