What's your TP speed?

Teleprocessing speed, not toilet paper speed. ( OMG! 40 sheets a minute! )

I was just wondering, because my ISP - Charter, last week, just gave this thing called PowerBoost to everybody and it's supposed to double upload speeds and give a (unspecified) boost to download speeds. I currently have a 5Mbs Down/.5Mbs Up plan, and I used to get a nice consistent 4.97/.49 but with PowerBoost it's highly erratic. Week day nights have been terrible most of the week, with speeds as low as 1.1/.3 but usually around 3.1/.5 - this part is not acceptable.

[boasting=on]
But, (and a big but it is) when it's good in the mornings and right now, it's way above what I'm paying for, not just a little increment, I'm talking 2x, 3x, and once 4x download speeds.

The best part about the PowerBoost is: Charter says it is - F R E E !
[/boasting]

Here are a couple of examples:

Both sites offer free speed tests, but on DSL Reports, the second one is the preferred speed test indicator. (Just click the SpeedTest.Net image above to try it.) It has a handy copy button to put BBC code friendly url & img blocks on the clipboard for you to paste here.

The first one is more friendly to people outside of the states, but it forces you to manually copy the text of the BBC code. Click the image to see what I'm talking about. The link to the speed test is on the left side bar.

So, what kind of speeds are you getting?

The speeds are all over the place. I thought I was on the slow end of the spectrum, but I guess I'm somewhere south of the middle.

Speedtest.net - World Results

US dosn't make the top 10?

I can see Japan and Korea beating the US, but Romania?

Usually around 8 Mb/s for download and .38 up.

My speedtest.net reported download speed seems to vary a lot though, depending on which test site I choose, and distance isn't really a factor.

Pretty cool site, I always used speakeasy.net. This one seems to be much more on on par for what i should have.

I get the feeling its taking into account all speed tests ever, while people have been testing in the UK and US etc while the technology was improving (remember 512Mb ADSL being state of the art?) while the countries listed higher up have jumped directly to the high speed modern technologies.

That's my theory anyway.

Romania have been heavily invested in their interweb infrastructure because they're at an economic crossroads.....you have extremely educated technicians who work for very few euros. I've worked with several Romanian companies in situations in which I needed a lot of bandwidth with experts running it for not a lot of money (relative, of course).

They are also pretty hilarious as individuals and have lots of great* anti-gypsy jokes. I'd IM one tech with "do you have enough gypsy cages for the winter?" and he'd say "never enough cages". Good guys.

*not so great if you're a gypsy, sorry :/

Powerboost is just turning overselling up to the next level. It lets them advertise higher speeds by taking the throttle off... but you only get those speeds at off-peak times: at peak times it will have little effect or even reduce the available bandwidth by increasing demand.

This morning Powerboost is still giving me almost 3x my normal 5/.5 :
