I'm not sure what this sentence started out as but I'm pretty sure I've seen that research and I'm pretty sure it didn't look like that. It was more like 70% of men play as the opposite gender. Or do they mean "70% of female avatars and 54% of male avatars"? Or do they mean "sometimes play as the opposite gender"?

Anyway, I don't like huge bazongas, and my female alt is pretty modest in her upper body proportions. She's pretty big in the haunches, but she looked wrong with a big floofy tail and skinny hips.

Maybe, but I see it more as game, giving that no one knows the answer unless the person decides to be honest. To me, it is SL's version of Where's Waldo:

As much as I admire "PixPol" for trying, he tends to skim the top layer of his "research" and not follow links within the pieces he quotes to form his premise. I did, and posted what I found in the comments.

Interesting topic!! As most of you know, I am a "cross gendered" AV in SL. In RL I'm a guy but I am a somewhat activer crossdresser. I enjoy putting on make up and women's clothing and going out in public as a woman. Its a lot of hard work to do it right and if you don't do it right its just no fun.

I've never had a conventionally "hot" AV in SL though. I wear glasses and until recently my AV was on the short side for SL [2 meters] and had fairly normal sized breasts. I was usually brunette although I went through an auburn and a blonde stage occassionally. Experiences of being hit on were so rare as to be remarkable. This is both with and without the "I'm transgendered" statement in my profile.

I recently got a new shape. I'm taller now and the boobs are bigger but NOT gigantic. I'm a bit broad shouldered. I still wear glasses and usually dress conservatively - ladies suits, evening gowns or nice skirt sweater combinations. For beach wear, my bikinis are what I call "Full coverage". I don't usually wear thong swim wear unless I'm feeling REALLY frisky. I get hit on a little more often, but still not nearly as much as many of you. It may be due to the transgendered info in my profile. I have a RL photo in my profile as well.

A few nights ago, I had an ODD situation. I was bored, and didn't feel like sailing or flying aircraft so I went to a couple of clubs. In a country western club, I was hit on almost immediately by a guy...we chatted a bit and then he had to go and take some photos of someone, but he still IMs me occassionally. I then went to a jazz club and met a very interesting guy from Chile who is a classical musician. We had a lovely time together and despite his best efforts I did not have sex with him. He still seems interested.

I honestly could not care less what a person's AV looks like or what SL gender they are or what RL gender they are. Intelligence, wit, character and a large amount of simple human kindness and courtesy is what gets me everytime.

Sooz

It is a game, yes.. I find myself wondering what sex people are based on their avatars. But I'm not willing to make broad sweeping statements that big busted, ditzy female AVs in SL are played by men in r/l. That is why I made the statement I did.

Honesty has nothing to do with it. If it was required to say what sex you are r/l, then perhaps you can talk about honesty. But someone portraying themselves as how they see fit is not dishonesty.
That would be like saying all furries are lying because they aren't actually anthropomorphic in r/l.

Anthropomorphic (ān'thrə-pə-môr'fĭk): resembling or made to resemble a human form: an anthropomorphic carving.

Everyone in SL is anthropomorphic.

Furries arent animals in real life? :/ I'm heartbroken. I always assumed I was talking to house pets while their owners were at work.

One thing about what you're saying about the "broad sweeping statements" is that you have it backwards, and it isnt.. a compatible analogy that way.

There is a significant difference between saying;

Many large breasted avatars are really men

and

Many men who play female avatars, make them large breasted.

Everyone in SL is anthropomorphic.
Sorry I meant has animal parts.
For example cat ears, fluffy tails, scales, etc.

The comparison makes sense to me.

I think that making any assumption about the r/l characteristics of the person based on the avatars characteristics is wrong.

Ms. Trudeau, as Lord Byron said, "You walk in beauty like the night." Your scintilating mind, exquisite sense of humor and the inate grace and style exhibited by your AV as well as your marvelous boats [of which I have a veritable squadron if not a fleet now] combine to make you irresistable. Would you do me the profound honor of having a drink and brief chat with me?

You've just been hit on.

... And tinies, dragons, robots, drows, fae, angels, demons, lycanthropes, vampires, merfolk... and all the other imaginative people who make their SL different from their RL because they can.

But it doesnt though.

If there are 20000 large breasted female avatars in SL, and 5000 are played by men.. then the statement would be "some"

If there are 5000 female avatars in SL, and 3000 of them have larger than average breasts.. then the statement would be closer to "many".

You're trying to combine two completely different statistics, about two completely different things for the sake of being able to call them a "blanket statement" about avatar characteristics.

To be quite honest, I would say that the numbers I've had experience with over 2 years in SL very accurately represent the statements made.

On a related not, I also suspect that many, if not most, of the Ms. New Supersized Bootylicious Junk in the Trunk avatars - butts n hips enlarged to the point of distorted mesh - are piloted by white kids.

I mean butts like these:

Anthropomorphic animals, as opposed to anthropomorphic people, anthropomorphic toys, anthropomorphic trees (those would be firrys), or anthropomorphic toasters (brave, little, or otherwise).

Same here - I can only remember four times anyone in SL has hit on me, ham handed or not. Oh, wait, five times. Still one hand.

I'm not sure if it's the way I look or the places I frequent - or don't frequent, since I hardly ever leave my workshop.

You're misreading my post. I said "no one knows the answer unless the person decides to be honest", meaning: "honest when asked about their RL gender". I don't see folks with avs of a different gender to be lying simply by the fact that their av and their RL genitals don't match.

More than one woman has told me that her av represents an idealized version of herself.

Women are bombarded with the idea that if they don't look like Miss America, they are not attractive. They have trouble believing that a petite, small busted woman can be quite attractive.

Considering this, is it surprising at all that many women in SL are tall, blond, tanned, and busty?

Why not? My av represents an idealized version of myself. I blame Chuck Jones.

I find SL immersive enough to take avatars at face value most of the time. Obviously I know they might be very different from their real selves, even if they have realistic human avatars, but that's who they are in SL - except when they log in with an alt!! That raises another question - are alts different characters in their own right? (My alt has no character or personality, it's purely functional and is a shiny black ball most of the time).

I did have one experience that made me think once - I was at a beach and a bald, fat male avatar with a lot of body hair, dressed only in a skimpy red thong, turned up.
I looked at his profile and he had an RL photo of his bald, fat RL self, with lots of body hair, dressed in a skimpy red thong - exactly like his av! AAAARRRGGGHH!!!

Depends on the player. Some people always play the same character. Some... really really don't.
