These poll results fill me with warm fuzzies and hope.

Though admittedly, the warmth mostly comes from the flames of my hate towards irrational reactions to content theft.

Personally, I plan to continue to not make things.

Then I will also not sell them.

With this complete lack of income, I will then not buy things.

Oh, I care.

It's just that "Boycotting" or participating in a "no account activity day" would be an extremely silly thing. Since that's how I roll anyways.

To my mind, there's a difference between "not caring" and "not caring to participate in a particular protest one thinks is going to be pointless".

Now, had it been presented as, "we've done some preparatory work, and the following major stores are going to shut up shop, so you can be reasonably sure more than a handful of people will be notice that a protest is actually taking place..." it might have been a different story.

Plus, LL's history of not really paying much heed to resident protests.

Shooting myself in the foot with a pointless protest that does nothing to curb content theft, only hurts being a creator and the bottom line of other creators while not hurting The Lab in any way. Wait, that idea is already taken? damnit....

Except it would not have been different.
Last time it was better organised, better supported, better publicised, had much more legitimacy and was quite a novelty in that such a thing had not really been tried before.

Even given all that it was about as successful as the Sinclair C5.

This time it is nothing more than a knee jerk reaction, born of the hysterics of a few fashionista who have always thought they were somehow best placed to spearhead the fight against content theft. No matter how many times they shoot themselves in the prim shod foot they will hobble on from one cack handed campaign to another.

It is no wonder we don't get taken seriously. Such dramatics make us all look ridiculous.

Did I mention that I am not completely sold on this protest

To be fair to Step Up they have been working on this campaign for the 5th of November for quite a while. Step Up!

The shop closure campaign running on the same day had less notice, but I think getting people to be aware and talk about the issue is what is important. So many people seem oblivious to the fact that content ripping is wrong. Education is never a waste

"What? You mean we don't have to pay for this stuff? I had no idea! Awesome!!!!!!"

That is the more likely outcome of education. But they are going to find out at some point anyway. May as well get the entire grid up to speed right away. Neil's sales will skyrocket i'm sure. I bet that guy makes more money than M Linden does.

There's a protest?

LL makes most of it's money off of tier. The only real way of getting their attention SINCE THEY NEVER BLOODY PAY ATTENTION TO IN-WORLD PROTESTS is to either close shop and stop paying tier (and get permabanned), or stake out the LL office hours with signs reminding them of MISC-3088 and their obligations under the DMCA.

Seriously. The only time I've seen a Linden is A.) When they ban someone and forget to turn godmode on B.) When they're making excuses for failures at their office hours.

I don't think staking out the office hours would help much either. They KNOW what they need to do, they're just.. I dunno. ...either incapable of it, or deliberately not doing it because they directly benefit from allowing content theft to continue. Which they do - content thieves pay tier too.

Abandoning your land and not paying tier - well fine, that'll hurt Linden Lab's pocket, except the content thieves aren't closing up shop, so every legitimate one closing, raises the proportion of bad apples in the barrel.

The only, ONLY way to get Linden Lab's attention is a RL lawsuit, where the threat involves having the plug pulled on the entire grid.

Is it really spreading awareness, or just preaching to the choir? Most of the discussion seems to be from people who are already well aware of the content ripping issues, and just think the store closure idea is stupid and counterproductive. There have to be more effective ways to reach people.

Right, and when the judge decides that the plug has to be pulled?
Me thinks we all have shot us in the foot then really badly.
You happen to know a grid where we all can move to to play merchant?

That isn't among the remedies requested by Stroker and Munch: original complaint. It seems more like alarmist hyperbole than anything that will actually happen. As for shooting oneself in the foot, LL seems to do this well.

I think it is a matter of perspective and that for the most part we all, as creators, need to get some. I understand totally why creators feel vulnerable at the moment. Between content theft and the downturn it is all looking quite depressing. The folks at the lab are either unable or unwilling to extend any solutions that make us feel more protected.

However content theft has always been with us. It is not a new phenomenon at all. More importantly than that I think that most people are basically decent. If they want something they shop for it and buy it. I don't think these people really need us to educate them at all. Whilst I can empathise that it seems to be us against the world at the moment I do think that if we keep on banging the drum like we are we stand a real risk of alienating our only natural allies - the people who still do buy our shit.

I would be willing to place substantial bets on the people who actively seek out ripped content being a significant minority of the resident population. Thus if they are not inclined to pay for their stuff then frankly, they won't be listening to any message. They made the decision before we started talking so it is a one way dialogue. We are shouting at the wrong people here folks.

People are not stupid. They understand the difference between supporting their favourite stores and ripping them off. It is time we stopped treating everyone as our enemy, inject some logic into the equation and target resources where they might make some difference. The issue will never be properly addressed as long as we are content to cry into our milk and then shout at the milkman because milk is not as creamy as it used to be.

The ONLY people with the power to combat the pro rippers are Linden Lab. That is where the dialogue needs to be directed. They are not listening at the moment and I can't say I blame them given all the hysteria coming from disparate groups, each with their own agenda fuelled by ego.

Honestly .... we need to get a grip

I will be mourning the loss of a true martyr - Mr. Fawkes who came the closest yet to getting rid of a whole heap of MP's in one fell swoop. We can't even get rid of them when they have taken our cash to pay for the cleaning of THEIR moat! Protests fall on deaf ears in sl, especially when people log on to have fun and some placard waver keeps getting in the way. Derender option on Emerald is a great addition . I shop, i buy, and hardly ever look at who has created it...sorry all you creators out there.

No cake option in the poll either =(

A common misconception of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot - The target was not Members of Parliament in the Commons, but rather King James , the Aristocracy and the senior Protestant Clergy in the House of Lords.
