SLU definitely has it's ear to the ground as far as happenings in SL (and the world, really. Sad but true, I get a lot of my news from here.)

However, I don't think that the population of SLU is an accurate cross-section of SL residents in general. The people here like to keep informed... that's why many are here. The average person in SL doesn't know or care about a lot of this stuff. So just because something didn't fly here doesn't mean it won't catch on inworld, or vice versa. So I don't think it would be accurate to call SLU a "tester" audience, so to speak.

As a community we have more knowledge of and higher financial/emotional stakes in Second Life than the average resident. We also suffer from beta syndrome (or oldbie syndrome) where we're continually shellshocked every time LL shakes things up (or breaks them), altering this world we've known so "long."

We are definitely NOT a good cross section of Second Life as a whole because, for one thing, we all speak English. For another, we're mostly geeks of one stripe or another, and I hear tell that there are some actual "normals" who use Second Life these days.

EDIT: To continue the thought about beta syndrome, I liken LL to Microsoft, who, with every new version of Windows or Office, makes massive(ly retarded) changes in the way their new products work. Almost all non-security-related changes are made with a mind toward making their products more accessible and intuitive to NEWCOMERS (they figure the experts, the oldbies, will RTFM and learn to live with the new stuff). Linden Lab always has an eye toward the future, and that future doesn't always (in fact, hardly ever does) sync up with what most of the SLU crowd would like to see. LL wants to make SL attractive to the types of people who wouldn't already know about it... and that entails a fair amount of sanitizing and other things we no likey.

I think many of us can see a time when, if someone offers the right package, we would try pastures new. I can't ever imagine not having SLU as my base however. For me it is a bit like when you go out on your travels and then get back home. It's just such a relief to get in, put the kettle on, kick your shoes off and let out that fart you had to keep in all day because it's not the done thing to do it in public

My mother would be so ashamed of me right now

I think SLU is one small currant in the great bun of Second Life.

Or is that me?

Yes - that was me, commenting to a post in Dusan Writer's blog. And I meant it in this sense:

Yeah, the analogy breaks down since we (thankfully) don't die from LL's noxious ideas... we just dissect and ridicule them to death.

I think SLU is closer to being SL's "cutting edge". I came here originally following the chat exchange of two friends I consider to be smart and dedicated to staying informed /clued in to both SL and RL. By the time I check BBC America's news... this forum has usually already digested most of it and moved on to new news.

Thank Jebus this place is NOT a "an accurate cross-section of SL residents in general"! Just wading through the inanity would make intelligent exchanges futile.

We came here because we heard this was where the "cool kids" hung out, and it is.

There's a traceable lineage starting with the old (pre-Strife) official SL boards. When they decided they weren't interested in running a board (which involved listening to people whine and bitch as people like to do - you know, customers?) there was a fracturing of reality. I think there were 3 or 4 3rd party boards that sprouted up trying to fill the void, including SLU. But for a time most of the traffic was on Second Citizen. Then it closed down, and there was a mass migration to SLU.

Poor Cris.

So we are essentially the third-generation "Official Unofficial Second Life" forum.

To be totally and brutally honest, you know what SLU is?

It's a bunch of people from SL that come and write stuff back and forth.

Thats it.

I don't care how 'big', 'successful' or 'old' you see yourself - the fact is that if you came close to 1 in 1000 of the people in SL actually knowing your name, I'd be very surprised. 1 in 1000 know about SLU - even more surprised.

Next year it will be even more so.

SL has grown, for some of us our perceptions of it haven't. Maybe once folks were big fishes, but the pond is now an ocean.

hahah but it's true - and certainly not a belittlement of the joint... if 1 in 1000 folks in SL knew SLU that would be a massive number of people. It's still one of the biggest SL related online communites in existance, and certainly the longest.

But it's not like the 'good ole days' when I could mention a sim name and 90% of the folks knew EXACTLY where I was talking about.. I doubt 1 in 1000 folks know about the 'official' forums - or bother to look at them.

Let me put it this way: a year ago I was told 'Hey read this article on SCD - its a laugh!' and I said 'what the fuck is SCD?'

I think if a lot of SL bloggers, reporters, writers, and even creators, had an inkling of how very very very small they have become in the scheme of things it would be an ego shattering moment.

Fortunately, not being "big, successful, or old (at least in SL years), I couldn't care less about the size of the fish I swim among.

I find we mostly get back some measure of what we invest in things... or we move along fairly soon.

It's difficult some days just to find a place to have an intelligent conversation - or civilized disagreement - (or a nasty over-dramatic hissy-fight) with other adults. I always find some of that here.
