Dress code for Business Avatars

The Gartner group have just released a report on the use of avatars by RL businesses . They are predicting by 2013 that 70% of firms using virtual worlds will have dress codes for staff avatars.

87.3% of statistics about the future will be wrong.

Incidentally, this might be because 98.5% of all statistics are totally made up.

Gah, IMO in an environment like SL, the staff should reflect the diversity of the platform. That's why I DON'T have a dress code for staff. I suppose if I had someone who was really into hooker wear or fetish wear I might ask them to tone it down a bit, but generally speaking I want people to be themselves. I myself often wear gothic clothing, and my av has lovely full body tattoos.

I once attended a meeting during which two LL employees gave a talk while sharing an avatar that was a giant chicken. There were even stranger Lindens in the Land Expo audience. Some people might find it unprofessional but I think unusual avs make our world more interesting and exciting! Boring avs in business suits will not engage users of SL very effectively.

The report says "by 2013". I don't think a virtual world of the nature of SL, where content creation is free for all, will still exist by 2013, because of the problem of content theft. I suspect that the environment will be very different by then. I expect more corporate users will be using standalone grids, or ones like Blue Mars where content is controlled.

So I don't think highly customised avatars will be as common then as they are now, particularly for business. You'll pick your hair and your outfit from an approved list.

I would agree with dress codes when one is representing the company in some capacity, as in meeting a client or office-hours work.

Outside of official business (almost) anything goes. Why almost? A company can request that we do not associate things (e.g. adult material) with the company, for this I would recommend having a separate avatar for non-work. While such a rule is to me oppressive iRL, it's ok in VLs because avatar switching is possible.

And Second Life conveniently provides exactly the avatars needed already in the library for use upon login the first time. Well to be specific some fine SL creators provided these avatars to LL and LL put them in the library.

Welcome to clone life. Maybe they need to make stick men and stick women available for rank & file staff and only allow executives to be well dressed. That would be the Disney IT division way. And all the stick figures would stand obediently and silently in those patented Disney queue lines pressing the applause button on command. Ahh how I miss the sovio-stazi life at Disney. Not.

Or they can be like that black lawyer lady in Surrogates that Bruce Willis told "could be a big fat guy with his dick hanging out"

Reposting from the LL forum::

Do people really still go to the office in starched collars and their Sunday best anymore? (O.o)

This whole conversation is sounding quite funky to me. Really, I don't see anything in all of PG SL that would cause trouble in a business networking environment. I mean... Why are we trying to slink back to 1950's ideals of business "attire"... (o.O)

Myself... I wear chains, a padlock, calf high glossy red lace-up boots, and have one EVIL head of hair down to the middle of my back. I've been known to streak colors into it once in a while. (^_^)

My lead technician has more tattoos than he has skin. (^_^)

My senior tech is a skinny Chinese boy with manga hair and a thing for ripped clothing. (^_^)

And, my boss... Well, she spotted me yesterday while I was logged in to SL at lunch time...

... commented that THIS is "adorable"!!! XD

Hey! It's a uniform, ain't it? (^_^)y

That's too bad. The corporate world has too much "stick up the assedness" as it is. It would be nice if SL could be a sort of "Casual Friday" place. It might help with some creative thinking, something the business world sorely needs.

I guess eventually, logging into SL will give you this:

I haven't worn a tie to work in 10 years - the auto industry was one of the first places to adopt "corporate casual".

And the article doesn't say what codes should be adopted, just that there should be some. I would see a lot of places doing polo shirts and slacks, while others might actually do suits.

Furrys might be out though.

My dresscode at work (RL) is very casual, and today I was shopping for a new sweatshirt to wear for work (because they insist on having the air-con on full blast even when it's ten degrees celsius outside).

I picked up one that said "uber-slacker" on the front. I was tempted, but I didn't quite dare.

Dressing for disney (IT Division) was easy. black suits daily. Well people that matter wear black suits. Meetings look like MIB conventions.

No the suits did not make anyone more effective at anything. I hate that place. Better to be poor than have a stack of frikkin beepers, blackberries, and cell phones and each one for a different project's constant emergencies. The guys look like they are wearing batman belts lmao. Imagineering is the place with no dress code. Guys don't have to look like perfect aryan genetics in that division.
