Watermarking creations? - How?

With all the talk of copying and such I thought it might be good to watermark things I create for SL. But I have no idea how to for SL.
I do watermark my stuff on deviantart but is it possible to watermark stuff for SL that doesn't visibly show on the textures? Someone mentioned Digimark(?) but also the cost of it.

Thanks for any help on this.

For builds, putting a hidden prim inside the piece with your name etc on it.

For clothes, putting a watermark on the parts that aren't on the mesh. It could even be a code that only you know, Like a special symbol, then you would have proof of that symbol when you file a DCMA on them,.

for textures make a logo or other image and merge it over an area not used or with uniform color value, to make it not visible simply make the layer 95-98% transparent before merging.

my skins all have "property of munchflower zaius, motherfuckers " written on the spaces where you can't see it on the skin. Unfortunately that's easy to work around if you know even basic photoshop, but still, it's something.

Some info on Digital Watermarking.

The problem is the word "watermarking". Watermarking is traditionally a way to mark a photo or graphic, it wasn't intended to be invisible...which is what you need for SL. If you add a visible one, then the rippers will simply remove it. You need something that only you know about, and is easy for you to prove should it become necessary.

I'm moving more towards steganography as a means to embed info into a graphic invisibly.

Will that work with GIMP too? I guess I'm going to have to do that with my clothing now. It's really sad that it's having to come to this, but I don't want to give up making clothing or other items.

I have not found anything for GIMP that doesn't leave a visible watermark. Which is another reason I think steganography is going to be the way I go.

I don't need encryption, obviously, just a way to invisibly mark that graphic as mine.

A lot of Steganographic techniques relay on the image file remaining unchanged in size or format - Unfortunately the Second Life upload process IIRC involves conversion of the file to JPeg2000 which may break the Steganography . Commercial products such as Digimarc are much more robust and the embedded watermark can survive conversion and some resizing .

I know, but Digimarc only works for Photoshop. It used to work for a Corel product but they no longer support it. So we need a better way, not everyone uses Photoshop.

So can it be done with TGA files? JPEGs don't really work well with uploading items for clothing use, at least not in my experience.

I like this idea but I started making plant textures.
I don't think I can use the not seen areas unless I make the textures larger, then offset the image so the watermark, etc, doesn't show.

Yes, I watermark all .TGA files. I've tested it, uploading to SL, then saving the file. Digimarc can still read the watermark.

I haven't attempted to manipulate the graphic then test it though.

Found this for GIMP, it might be helpful.

This is my script "watermark".

PHP Code:
checkCreator() {

key kJT "<my key>";
    if (
llGetCreator() != kJT)

llDie();
}

default {

state_entry() {

checkCreator();
    }

Yeah, yeah... I know...

The GIMP tutorial looks extremely easy and probably just another step in the process, most likely a final step before importing back to SL. Thanks for finding that.

I like the script idea too.

That's damned cute. Don't think I'd dare use it with non-copy items, but otherwise...

Oh, nothing I make is no-copy .. I'm mean, but not evil

If people copy my prim objects, they'll just need to find other scripts to power them. Though script cracking is out there as well?

I'm trying to imagine where the spaces you can't see would be on a naked skin .....
