It looks like the part they're "selling" is licensed under BSD, so yeah.

The fact that it copies the entire sim, without regard to the creator of items, is irresponsible. At best it will breed laziness and the inadvertent copying of items that one does not have permission to copy. And the less-than-honest will have a built in excuse "Oh wow, that was your item? I am so sorry. The tool just copied everything. I thought it had all be created by our design team."

I realize that it's painful to move a sim from SL to an open server. It might even take days to work through all of the link sets. But really, is unleashing a tool like this, which has the potential to hurt thousands of designers, really justified by the handful of people that would use it for legitimate purposes? It's not enough to say "Thieves can already copy content." This tool makes it incredibly easy to copy massive quantities of content.

Rezzable should pause, and act with a sense of responsibility.
I can't hit the agree button enough. There are definitely legitimate uses for a tool like this, but freely releasing it open source and with no permission checks is completely irresponsible.

But I doubt that being a good citizen is something RightAsRain was aiming to do in the first place.

As someone has said on one of the blogs, they've just effectively unwittingly released all Rezzable content free to be ripped and ripped and ripped, over and over and over again, just as retribution - there would be no remorse about it, and crucially, no public sympathy (which usually helps the good content makers in their efforts to stamp out the rippers). This might be SL's equivalent of the "longest suicide note in history".

Perhaps it's a desperate bid to get people to visit their grid.

This is stunningly appalling behaviour.

It almost looks like a ploy to garner attention ~ who *wouldn't* realise that mentioning such a thing would light up all the forums for a week?

Even if his code isn't released, some obscure coder will quickly code up something equivalent, just for the infamy and the lulz.

It shows an incredible lack of class, to even consider making such a thing as builderbot easily available to the script kiddies out there. And to mention, up front, its complete lack of permissions checks was beyond telling, regarding motives.

massive

I think its time to start making a counter bot to help out the builders. Something that will check all builds against ones you have saved as yours.. to allert you if something is a little too similar..

and sigh at these people trying to sell it. I think pretty much every impimentation, test client, copybot, meerkat, emerald, etc, have all been open source. ah well, consider the source i supose.

Makes as much sense as anything else Rezzable as done.

Sigh, I suppose if it over the top enough it might just force the Lidens to quit being so dewyed eye about content.

Completely Irresponsible
Mon, 07/20/2009 - 20:47 — Seamus (not verified)

This is the most completely irresponsible product I have ever seen.

The only RL comparison that would be equivalent that I can imagine is if some company began selling master keys that could open any door and start any car anywhere in the world. They'd say that it was only for use by the legitimate owner in case they lost their primary key. They'd acknowledge that criminals could use it, but they argue that since criminals can already hotwire a car or pick a lock, they aren't responsible for the incredible crime wave that will ensue.

Rezzables is intentionally making a product that can and will cause financial harm to other individuals by willfully refusing to include a safety system (in this case that being item permissions checking).

What Rezzables is considering unleashing is a tool for theft on an industrial scale without any safety mechanism.
Yeah that....

This is just repulsive. It's fine to turn your nose up in the air and go ahead and think other creators are shit, everyone's entitled to freedom of thought and speech. But acting on it like this is a completely different story.

RightAsRain Rimbaud is Rezzable's CEO.

He's also an ass, frankly. He's insulted SLU, declared that Black Swan was by far superior to anything else on the grid, used a blog post about my retirement to advertise for his company, and otherwise been a douche.

As for Greenies, it's a Rezzable sim, along with Black Swan and a few others. I know Starax did building work for them, and for all I know he may have designed some of those sims, but they're all owned and run by Rezzable.

He commissions full permissioned content from talented artists and then markets it and distributes it, basically. He hasn't actually created anything himself (that I know of), but he basically pimps out his stable of art ho's.

Can LL block the use of this builder bot ? or would they have to block all 3rd party viewers to stop it from being used.

Won't be easy. It's hard to tell the diff between third party clients and the official one. Probably is impossible.

Sadly LL cannot block this without completely redoing (i.e. fucking up) pretty much everything platform related and thus taking ten steps backwards.

edited to add: Unless there's some legal way to C&D it but as previously mentioned in this thread
the tool would still be released out of spite.

This seems to be the ultimate scorched earth strategy, wrapped in a bunch of fake feel good nonsense about being a useful tool.
