The song that kept rolling

I'm on a covers kick

The Train kept rollin' by Tiny Bradshaw, Howard Kay, and Lois Mann - 1951

Well, on a train, I met a dame
She rather handsome, we kinda looked the same
She was pretty, from New York City
I'm walkin' down that old fair lane
I'm in heat, I'm in love
But I just couldn't tell her so

I said train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
With a heave and a ho
But I just couldn't tell her so, no no no

Well, get along
Sweet little woman, get along
On your way, get along
Sweet little woman, get along
On your way
I'm in heat, I'm in love
But I just couldn't tell her so, no no no

Yeah, train, I met a dame
She rather handsome, we kinda looked the same
A-she were pretty, from New York City
I'm walkin' down that old fair lane
I'm in heat, I'm in love
But I just couldn't tell her so

I said a-train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
I'm in heat, with a ho
But I just couldn't tell her, na na na na

Well, get along
Sweet little woman, get along
On your way, get along
Sweet little woman, get along
On your way
I'm in heat, I'm in love
But I just couldn't tell her

Well, we made a stop in Albuquerque
She musta thought I was a real cool jerk
Climbin' off the train and lookin' handsome
Lookin' so good jack couldn't let it go
Ooh, but I just couldn't tell her so

I said a-train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
Train kept a-rollin' all night long
I'm in heat, I'm in love
But I just couldn't tell her, na na no

The first time I heard this song on the radio (Arrowsmith version) I thought the words were...

"Trained pepperoni, on my lawn"

Then there's also this performance by The Yardbirds in Antonioni's Blow Up; it's listed as "Stroll On," but it's just "Train" with new lyrics by Keith Relf, reportedly because there were issues with getting the rights to "Train Kept A-Rollin'." Way to circumvent copyright.

The extremely cool things about this video, to me, are:

a) The fact that it features both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page.

b) The way that Beck gets pissed off at his equipment for acting up and beats his guitar to death (which he was instructed to do by Antonioni, who had originally wanted The Who for the film; beck has never been a guitar smasher)

c) The surreal fashion in which the crowd just stands watching (except for the chick in the silver coat and striped pants) until Beck tosses the neck of his smashed guitar into the audience, at which time they go into a feeding frenzy

d) The way that Page gives a little smirk after Beck smashes his guitar and digs into his Telecaster even harder.
