Which do you use?

I love the frame rate in full screen, but window mode is so much better for productivity.

By the way, a nice method to keep the same aspect ratio with normal and maximized windows:

Maximize the window (not fullscreen mode), go to prefences -> graphics. Note down the width/height pixels displayed on top. This will -not- be your monitor's resolution.

Go back to window mode, stretch the window to the width you want, and set the height according to the width/height ratio you got in maximized mode.

Very handy to make sure huds etc. don't get shoved around on maximizing.

I brought this up because I have been running SL in maximized window mode for like, ever. And been running around with 12fps max. Fiddling last night I resized the window ever so slightly and my frame rate shot up to 30+

The window size wasn't reduced by much and it seems so odd that maximized hits the fps so much.

I use window mode exclusively. I'm usually putzing around in Photoshop, web surfing, and chatting the whole time I'm in SL.

Framerate is higher in fullscreen for the same reason that games have higher FPS when it's fullscreen; the computer is only rendering that program, nothing else, so your graphics card doesn't have to do anything but focus on that one program. When you switch to windowed mode, same as if you play WoW or anything else windowed, your computer has to render the game as well as your browser and Windows and any other programs you've got running, so FPS sucks.



I always run windowed because I'm usually always doing something else with SL in the background, but I wish I didn't have to.

i only play wow in full screen and my fps are great except dalaran when everyone and their mother is there.

sl i run windowed. i just tested full screen and umm., its like i am running wow...

I like fullscreen as I don't want distractions. I can always tap the window key if it all gets too much and check the RL again. I've never used a cucumber. Thought about it though...

It's strange though how having the window maximised (not full screen) in vista is causing such a frame rate drop.

i suppose it also depends on the program's expected size, does LL try to enforce 4:3 when most of us have 16:9 monitors?
Then switching to windowed and setting it to 4:3 should increase the framerate immensely.

Fullscreen. If I'm in SL, I'm not doing anything else, if I were, I wouldn't be in SL.In fact I shut down Windows Explorer along with the other background stuff when I run SL. I keep the Task Manager going if I need to go out of SL for something.

SL is the only program I use in window mode, I usually have about several programs open that I'm flitting between, itunes, photoshop, yahoo msg, twitter, firefox etc.

At one point a short time ago, I was trying the Release Candidate and it refused to retain the full screen mode. I couldn't understand why my FPS dropped to under 15 all of a sudden and was ready to delete the RC. Then I noticed it was in windowed mode. I changed it to full screen and bumped to 120 Fps!

Of course, RC wouldn't remember my preference at that time. I ended up deleting it and going back to the standard viewer. My fps isn't usually that good, but what a shock.

I will have to try full screen again but it's been my experience that the picture is much much sharper when I am in window mode rather than full screen mode. But I haven't tried full screen in ages. Maybe it's cause I'm on a Mac..

Full screen, definitely - I want to pay attention to SL and nothing else, when I'm in-world. I'll sometimes flip back to windowed mode, to peruse the list of SLURLs to places that have seemed worth visiting, gathered while reading RSS feeds and suchlike. Thankfully, switching between is quite a bit faster in Snowglobe than in viewers past - and actually works all the time, rather than routinely crashing the app.

I did not even know fullscreen existed until this thread. Whoops.

I probably won't use it though ... I often have Messenger, Skype, Email, Firefox etc. open at the same time.

I also have my graphics set to ultra and anti-aliasing at x16 permanently ... and I wonder my laptop gets a tad warm.
