I never said all young people are stupid or arrogant - I just said that the person I was referring to was arrogant.

Young people, due to their lack of RL experience, frequently still think in black and white terms. That's the arrogance of youth - which, again, not all young people have -or have in the same degree - to think they have all the answers. Most of them outgrow it, some earlier than others.

I have three daughters in their 20's, so I have some small knowledge on this matter.

I am almost afraid to add this part - but how many of you here really know how I act, as Bea, on a day-to-day basis? Very, very, very few of you. I think I can count, on one hand, the people here who really know Bea well.

I made the mistake of discussing in another thread how I reacted to a role-playing situation, and that led to a lot of assumptions.

As the recent case of Caster Semenya has proved - where they did the gender test and proved that she's both female and male, at the same time. Which sucks for her athletic career because she'll probably not be allowed to compete in either mens or womens competition.

Caster fits firmly into category 3 in Robert's list.

I interpreted it differently, but am happy to be corrected.

Ned, speaking for myself, whatever you do as Bea (or Ned, or anyone else for that matter) is entirely your own business. I would personally rather not see Bea referred to as though she is a separate person, but again it's your choice. I said earlier, it feels like you're trying to excuse anything she does as outside your responsibility. But by all means carry on if that's how you are most comfortable. By the same token, if you do it here, I can't apologise for commenting on it.

Finally, if I thought I was the only person who felt like it, I wouldn't have said anything, but the fact that a number of people appear to feel the same way indicates to me that it might be good for the SLU community to have it out in the open and discuss it.

Feel free to ignore me if you don't like my opinion.
And a number of people feel the opposite, but that doesn't change the fact that some people have decided that some of his mannerisms in posts are wrong and have decided he should be the one to change his ways in order to be accommodating to others, instead of others being more tolerate of how different people (including Ned) post.

I don't agree with what everything any one person says, but that doesn't prevent me from reading what they say or skimming over what I don't want to read. I don't feel it necessary to tell someone to change their mannerisms if that's how they choose to post.

Actually, I don't think you'll find anyone saying he needs to change, I might be wrong and don't have time to go back over the whole conversation now, but I think it's ok to tell him how we feel about it. Now he knows, and we know he likes it that way. That's all there is to it.

Shoot, if I was posting here as Bea, and was out about having a male alt, I would refer to him in third person. As Carter-Madhu pointed out, it is a whole lot easier.

Of course I (the typist) am responsible for Beathag McMahon's actions, just as I am responsible for Ned Easterwood's. But Ned and Bea are not the same. They are two different facets of their typist's personality, and their voices are different.

I did nor truly realize this until, on two distinct occasions, a member of this forum told Ned, in-world, that she missed Bea.

Ned is much closer to RL me. Bea is a younger, saucier, version, who inhabits a world where all sorts of nasties can be avoided by Control-h.

Sure it's okay to say how you feel about something but people were rude about it. That's all there is to it.

I discovered this when I made my alt, Salo. I was expecting it would be just the same old me, except with a different look. But Salo actually turned out quite different. For one thing, I was intending to make a totally gender-ambiguous avatar, but in the end Salo turned out to be more female (although still very butch female) than male. Lewis is more like how I am naturally, Salo is... I dunno. Somewhere on the continuum between the real me and a roleplay character. Maybe Salo is who I would have been, if I'd been happy with my RL skin. But I don't feel comfortable describing Salo as "me", and so I would always do as Ned does for Bea, and talk about her in 3rd person.

I was DJing tonight and I saw someone lurking outside of the club wearing a tag that said "Terrorist". He tp'ed away before he could state his business, but I did get his epic profile:

Quote:
Why are you looking at my profile? Worried? Or Ready?
Dear Anti-Imperialist Avatar, The Revolution is coming.
When you IM me remember: All Chat is recorded and may be passed on to others. You have been warned!
IF you are the CIA FBI NSA remember I am watching you too!
If you are a Anti-Imperialist Socialist and you are Fed up with the way things are going you know what to do. The following is in code for the informed:

As I browse profiles, I usually try and decypher the 'second speak' - the language of profiles.. much in the same way at a taco bell 'Supreme' means 'with sour cream' and 'Santa-Fe' means 'We stirred some corn in' .. here are a few to help you read between the lines and get you started:

Excited about life's journey
No concept of reality

Spiritually evolved
Oversensitive

Moody
Manic-depressive

Soulful
Quiet manic-depressive

Poet
Boring manic-depressive

Sultry/Sensual
Easy

Uninhibited
Lacking basic social skills

Unaffected and earthy
A Slob... and lacking basic social skills

Irreverent
A bitch.... and lacking basic social skills

Very human
Quasimodo's best friend

Swarthy
Sweaty even when cold or standing still

Spontaneous/Eclectic
Scatterbrained

Flexible
Desperate

Aging child
Self-centered adult

Youthful
Over 40 and trying to deny it

Good sense of humor
Watches a lot of television

I have several categories of profile-hate.

  • Internet Tough Guys - "DON'T MESS WIT ME I'LL FUK U UP" is not going to work, ever. Apparently these people have not heard of reverse psychology.
  • E-Vampires - No, I do not want to get involved in your roleplay group. No, I do not want to be bitten by a person who has probably bitten 300 other people, half of which probably have some blood-borne pathogen.
  • Furries - I just don't like them as a personal preference. Even worse are the ones that get a little too deep into their personal lives on their profile, which is even worse if I have to dig though their profile looking for their damn store.
  • Chronic cyberers - You've seen these people. Advertising their every desire, what collar they wear, who they "belong" to, how much they cost per hour... For God's sake, just go buy an ad on some classifieds page, I don't need to see that crap while I'm trying to resend products that got mis-delivered.
  • 14-year-old /b/tards - Probably doesn't bug anyone else as much, but those people with "LOL MUDKIPS DESU DESU LONGCAT ANONYMUSS BOXXY DURR HURR" in their profiles really tick me off.
  • 14-year-olds - Just get off the grid. Please.
  • Conspiracy theorists - Yes. We've all heard about Loose Change/Zeitgeist/whatever movie Michael Moore spewed out this week. You don't need to be standing around quoting from someone who has the literary intelligence of a sausage patty.
There's more, but I need more caffeine.
