Opensim help

I have a friend interested in getting started with opensim. Where are a few good places to start out? What are prices like? Stuff like that. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

OpenSim(ulator) is software. The software is open source and free. You can run it on your own computer. You can imagine this as being a 3D version of free web server software. (discussion)

Perhaps you are asking about how they can join some of the alternate grids like OSGrid, LegendCity and OpenLife etc? Prices vary and some research would be needed including searching these forums for peoples experiences.

I'm clueless with this stuff and don't intend on trying it, but I have a close friend who is thinking of doing his own sim that way for educational purposes and thought it would be a cheaper alternative to official SL that isn't practical price wise.

He could make his own personal grid with OpenSim. Or he could join someone elses grid.

It is a bit like wanting to make your own website. You could run it on your own computer, rent server space and set up your own web server or you could join some company and put your website on their servers.

If they are technically inclined they could host their own (either a whole grid, or they could host a region/simulator and register with OSGrid).

If they just want to log in somewhere and build they will have to join an alternate grid.

If it is not for access via the internet but just locally they should run OpenSim on their computer. (instructions)

He's a big technical person so I think the idea of just learning how to do it appeals to him as well. Thanks for the info.

@Sarah

There are also some standalone "sims" you can run on your PC if it's only for experimenting without the need to connect to a grid. Opensim can do this, easier is to use a ready made and ready to run package like realXtend or 3DX for Windows. At least 3DX may not work anymore with a normal viewer, but haven't checked for a while. Best to stick with something SL/Opensim compatible.

Big download button on the front page of opensimulator.org - grab the Windows installer.

Then read Maxx's tutorial here: OpenSim - Install and Configuration Tutorial « OpenSim Easy User Guide
