Interesting updates to Bloodlines HUD

I noticed on the Bloodlines site that they have a recent update to their HUDs. Now it's a forced update.

Numbers 2 and 3 are of interest to us. For #2, the HUD won't let them bite newbies younger than 14 days. The newbies will only be able to join by buying the HUD or waiting over 2 weeks to be bit.

With #3, renaming or adding stuff to the linkset of the fangs apparently would cause them to not work, to keep them from being modded into fake hugs that are actually bites. Didn't realize that was a problem.

What about newbies who didn't log in much until long after the 14 day aura of protection expired, due to needing to get better hardware or a change in interest? Were newbies in infohubs a large percentage of their influx of converts?

Could they try bypassing the tamper controls by just hiding the fangs inside the av or something?

For #2, I heard that a good percentage of Bloodlines stuff got abused by people utilizing fake alt accounts and bots. So that's probably as much to prevent that sort of game-gaming as it is protecting newbies.

Good point.

---------------------------

I'm just really glad they're at least attempting to do something to thwart people's attempts at using Bloodlines for awful purposes. I didn't expect them to to ANYTHING about it--but here they are, at least making an attempt. Whether it's a feeble attempt is yet to be seen.

Should I attempt to use the word "attempt" a couple more times?

Considering what a pain in the ass it is and what an epicenter it is for abuse reports I'm sure they had to do something or risk finally getting the attention of a Linden on one of their infrequent "I feel like doing something today" days.

I'm still waiting for the "Bloodlines HUD only activates in Bloodlines-enabled regions" approach.

For #2, I think the concern is more for the game than the newbies. If someone is running low on health, this prevents them from generating a bunch of alts they can bite. If they have to wait 2 weeks before they can bite their alts they have to go hunting or buy an amulet to last that long.

Any vampire system that does not take into account the effects of the sun is NOT a vampire game IMHO. Vulnerability to the sun is as intrinsic as the need to drink blood. With out the sun damage, you might as well be roleplaying a tick.

Heaven, to keep its beauty, cast them out, but even Hell itself would not receive them for fear the wicked there might glory over them.

With all due respect, the sun thing is actually quite recent; it first appeared in the 1922 film Nosferatu, which was a not-quite-legal adaptation of the Bram Stroker novel (the estate sued them for trademark violations). Bram Stroker only says that the vampires don't like the sun very much, and Dracula does walk around in daylight in London. What I haven't seen any recent adaptations touch upon is the fact that vampires have to sleep in a casket in their native soul (Dracula ships crates of soil along with his coffin) and that they can't pass over running water, except at low tide.

Of course, if you want to go back to the older sources of vampires, you could go back to the evil lesbo vampires from the 1840's: those have rather vaguely defined traits, besides the blood-drinking and a kind of hypnosis. Or you could go back to the Romanian legends: I wouldn't mind foiling a SL vampire by dropping a million tiny prims on the ground, and then watching him count each one, since they're supposed to be OCD like that. The old way to foil a vampire was to drop rice around his coffin, so he would count it all.....

But yeah, most SL vamps don't do jackshit in the way of RPing....

I'm more inclined to believe that it's pretty much completely to prevent "gaming" the game, and only accidentally protects newbies.

Wow, I never heard this either. But I haven't had any random newbs attempt to hug me lately, so I guess the garlic necklace protects against those modifications as well.

I really really like #2!! Now I can turn scripts back on at my freebie place so that people are able to use translators without being spammed with bite requests hopefully.

Why? Please do tell, it could affect my "50000L for a soul" approach.
