Sign of the Times? The SS Galaxy may be sinking...

I just found out via their group that the cruise ship SS Galaxy, which spans three sims, is likely to cease operations soon.

----

Dear Galaxy Community,

It is with great sadness I write to inform you the SS Galaxy will be closed and deleted from the SL grid on March 1st. With the effect of the world economic downturn, the Galaxy project is unable to sustain itself. After two years to the date of this project's start and large amount of resources spent with no recovery in sight, the financier of the Galaxy have decided to call it a quits.

If no serious action comes forth to save the ship by Feb 15th, the Galaxy will be destroyed in a spectacular sinking event on March 1st. It promise to be an event of a life time, just like the Galaxy herself has been. Stay tuned for group notice on the details.

Until then, our staff will be focused on the following house keeping tasks:

- all current occupied rooms and mall vendors will be allowed to stay till Feb 28. If you have paid rents beyond Feb 28 as of this message, we will refund your rents from March 1 and on.

- all unoccupied rooms' rent boxes have been set to 2 weeks max. The ship will stay open and operational for all to enjoy till the very end.

- room and service certificates will be honored as long as rooms and services are available. The last day to redeem certificates will be Feb 22.

- all personal objects will need to be removed from the ship by Feb 28. If you do not clean up your own objects, we cannot guarantee their safe return during the sinking process.

A Galaxy Museum is planned in SL and the website will survive as an archival site. We would like to preserve the "Galaxy Experience" and her memories as much as we can. There is even a possibility of a book with collections of stories and images from the Galaxy, "Life on the Galaxy". We'll let you know soon on how to contribute into the collection.

To our valued community members, we thank you for embarking on this most wonderful SL journey with us and your support and involvement which kept the Galaxy going in the last two years.

To the Galaxy Team, same as IRL, "the crew makes the ship", you've made the Galaxy Experience possible and special. It was an honor and pleasure serving with you. No matter what happens after this month, and wherever you carry on with your SL, you will always be part of the Galaxy family and the Galaxy yours.

Mahalo for the best two years of my SL. Aloha.

Bill Stirling
Sagittaria Owner and builder

-----

I remember spending a lot of time exploring the ship when I first heard about the sim, shortly after it was set up. Having never been on a cruise ship in RL, I explored every nook and cranny.

I was invited as a guest to wedding in the ship's chapel, between two people who had met on the ship, Bella LaSalle and Arkady Yost:

On occasion I even trotted out my Marilyn Monroe alt, to stroll the decks and alt to sunbathe by the pool:

Anyways, it was a special build to me and I will be sorry to see it go. I had a feeling in the back of my mind that perhaps this was going to happen; the owners had originally hoped to make their money by the large casino on the ship, but that plan was scuttled after the gambling ban.

And I ask myself: Are we going to see more large, ambitious projects like the SS Galaxy fold, especially as the recession starts to bite down hard?

Oh, and if I get a vote on how the ship goes down, I vote iceberg

I remember that build well from ages ago; it's truly wonderful. Thank you for posting this; I'm sorry to see it go also.

Awwww. Yes, that is a truly amazing build. with lots of attention to detail. This saddens me, but as George Harrison wrote so long ago, all things must pass.

This is the first time I've heard of it. Looks like I need to check it out before it is gone.

Oh please! not while there's at least one RMS Titanic still afloat on the grid?

I saw it and its sims up for sale on the SL forums last week.... I am trying to remember what they were asking.....

Edit to add they were taking bids starting at $1500. That alone for 3 sims is pretty damn good. Still no one made an offer

SL Forums
Yes, well .... with mainland parcels standing idle for months unsold at near giveaway prices and estates selling parcels at 1L just to get someone to help pay tier, and the land market showing no signs of recovering anytime soon, plus the added notoriety of having to be the one to delete that build to make use of the sims ... is it any wonder no one has made an offer?

Eh? With three sims that's 3 'return all objects' clicks away, really.

oh that is so sad to see that it will be disappearing from the grid. It was a favourite spot for my partner and I on occasion, and He once lived on there for a while. I am glad you posted this as we will get at least one last chance to visit before it is gone.

The Galaxy was at the top of my list for premier date spots. The grid will be a much sadder place without her.

Sadly, that's why it's probably leaving SL. It's known as a date spot. But as a rental? The marketing for its rentals leaves much to be desired. It's a fantastic build.... truly amazing. But how was it supposed to make any money?

That's what amazes me at times, anyways. I see landlords renting, advertising, renting out mallspace, brand owners struggling to make enough profit to keep the sim they have..

...and then I stand in a non-mainland sim or two that are pretty much just a nice landscape with a few barns and go 'Wat? Who pays 300 (600) bucks a month for this? Who?'

Ohhh.. I loved the SS Galaxy. I've only been there once...but what a night that was. Miniature golf, skeet shooting, and dancing under the stars...what's not to love?

We'd planned to go back and poke around some more...I guess the clock is ticking.

(But if it has to go away...I hope it's a really cool demolition )

Maybe they should try to partner it with LL, or just sell the build outright. It's amazing, and it would be a real loss if it left.

It's sad thinking about all that hard work and creativity just fading away. It would be great if LL did want to take it on in some fashion.

Eirik and I have had a date on the Galaxy or two, and I have fond memories of us spinning around the ballroom together and eating sushi in the Japanese restaurant.

It's a truly amazing build and I'm sorry to see it go.

The owners would possibly be able to maintain sufficient rentals if the sims were attached to the Blake Sea. How does one gain such privilege?

It is sad to see this project added to the long list of wonderful builds we've lost through the years.

That would be something cool to see on Blake.

Maybe one of the OpenSim grid owners could bid on the build itself, they tend to be land rich and content poor and something like that would be a nice draw to a couple of grids. If full perms can be obtained their are now tools that could transfer it fairly easily to another grid.
