No-Rez Hair

Well. This is new. (To me. I just noticed.)

Quote:
As of Nov. 2008 Deviant Kitties Hairstyles are under a new Copybot Protection.
This means the hairstyles are not rezable, please do not rez them on the ground.
The hair will disapear, you will be sent a copyright message, and your name will be logged as someone who has dropped the hairstyle.
The Hair IS however fully modable, as long as attached to your avatar.
This new precaution may be an inconvenience to some, but is necissary if Deviant Kitties Hairstyles are going to remain modifyable at all. Unfortunatly there are too many small minded, ignorant, people who think its ok to steal and redistribute at their will.
Copyright infringement is a serious offence punishable by law. Anyone using copybot to copy and redistribute items can be found and prosecuted under the copyright laws of their country, resulting in a fine or possible imprisonment.
Emphasis mine.

I suppose it preferable to no-mod, but oftentimes I rez hair so that I can unlink, duplicate, and relink prims. Sigh.

Magika hair also seems to have a similar script in it, although no warning about being added to a LIST.

Kind of silly. It took one line of code to implement and it can be easily thwarted. All somebody has to do is take the hair to a parcel where scripts are disabled, rez the hair on the ground, and remove the script. Then they can rez it anywhere they like. I understand the desire to protect your creations (mine have been copied, as people here are aware). But I really think this "protection" will just hurt their business more than it really protects. It certainly won't stop somebody that is determined to copy their products.

so, if i accidently click drop on my hair for some reason it is going to dissapear and I will loose it and be put on a list of people that might be copybotting?

this is going to end up with a lot of trouble for the creator, can you imagine how many people will be sending IMs to them because they accidently dropped it... going to be lots of lost hair and lost $$ and it can only hurt their buisness... typical that a few people have to ruin it for the majority

Well the hair is copyable, so you won't lose it from inventory, just the copy you rezzed.

But you will be on a suspected pixel terrorist watch list then.

ahh duh *smacks self in head* disregard my comments above then lol.
Still.. its a shame that you might get yourself on some list.. which i can imagine will be a large list..

once you are on that list.. has she said what will happen with it I wonder? no longer be allowed to shop with her maybe? ..

I only have a few hairs from there, and i guess i am going to have to be super careful and not my normal click happy clumsy self when wearing her items

Deviant kitties and Magika dont have a similar scrpt it is a same script made by the same scripter, it was soemthing they worked on together.

I dont agree with this and think it is a crock to be honest, As pers pointed out anyone with 1/2 a brain can over come this issue by turning off scripts before dropping it.

I understand them wantig to protect their work, and this is better than making the hir no mod. But to add someone to a list for whating to completely mod their hair is fucked up. What next? they begin to ban anyone who droppe the hir cos they MIGHT be a copybotter?? (and you bet thatis their plan)

You can also edit it while wearing it and remove the script. This sort of stop loss system won't really be full proof until LL makes it so we can have an additional permission that prevents deleting scripts from objects.

Ah, cool. I didn't realize, as I couldn't find the script in the DK hair to compare the names, just the notecard with the warning.

That was my fear. Someone doesn't read the included notecard, rezzes the hair, and is banned. Which could very well have happened to me, as I'm apt to overlook a notecard that comes with something like hair, which I know I normally wouldn't need instructions for.

Technique will work only against the non-savvy. But those intent on stealing it are not in that category.

The rez in no-script sandbox is a technique I use when I suspect a griefing object. That way I can learn what the object is without causing trouble to me or anyone else.

Script removal is also a possibility.

What I see is the same as what everyone else so far is seeing. A lot of innocent customers will get banned and such. This is likely to turn into a serious PR nightmare for the creator. The worst part is, it won't even achieve the intent of stopping the copying!

Hate to say it isnt exactly fear... that is the basic intentions actually. Anyone who's name coems up a few times will likely end up banned.

I had very long discussions with Sabrina about this. I was urging her not to gothis path before she did impliment it because the likelyhood is she will 'catch' innocent buyers

Never shopping there again. And I own a great deal of Magika hair and I love the time pieces I have.
I am sick of being punished as a consumer because people go literally crazy over theft. THE PEOPLE WHO GET COPYBOTTED HAIR WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT IT ANYWAY!!

At least the DK hair has a warning about being added to their list. The Magika hair has no such warning, just a notecard instructing you not to rez the hair.

1) folks who want to do any sorta 'frankenhair' will find this an issue.
2) So will noobs who drop stuff for friends to help adjust.

Why should the customer be put on a list that implies they are a thief just because they might be doing one of the above?

I agree, they buy the demos. So why not putthe script into the demos but not the full hair which consumers PAID for. But hey, not mystore, butyou can betshe will lose a number of customers over it.

Many a time I have gotten a hair from magika I love cept for the fringe (bangs) so i end a fringe i do like onto it... i cannot do that without rezzing th hair

Yes... thatis sneaky, but much of her reasoning is she wants to 'catch' people out. So iam not suprised she has doen it that way.

I am saddened that both of these designers are penalising genuine customers.

Stupid idea, but it won't stop anyone who actually wants to steal something, content theft is easy for just about anything if you know how. There is not a single hairstyle or item I own that I do not customize the hell out of, they've lost any future interest I may have had in their products simply due to the principle of the matter.

The only thing this will do is give honest customers a hard time.

Bad move.

One more thing. For my more complex products I have a notecard you can pick up BEFORE you decide to purchase. It's an all-text equivalent of a detailed brochure that tells you what you're getting into before you purchase. I used to keep a more detailed brochure on website (which I have to redo).

Can't these people do something like this. It's dead-easy really.

I didn't think someone could come up with a more stupid idea than hair (or clothes) that is mod only via a resize script, but I guess I shouldn't have underestimated people. ;P

Two more shops on the "won't shop there" list.

Screw that. Glad I didn't go to those shops when I went hair shopping today. I'd be having buyer's remorse if I had.

Punishing the people who PAY FOR your products is never, ever the way to go.

I just bought Deviant Kitties hair some time ago and nowhere in the (very short) note that came with it did they mention my hair would scream "THIEF! THIEF!" and disappear if I rezzed it... which I nearly did the other day because I wanted to make two-tone hair.

Well, guess where I won't be shopping anymore. I love modding my hair and I don't like the thought of being presumed to be a thief because of this.

What's funny too is the current variations of Copybot work just as fine when you're wearing something as an attachment.

I have no idea how to go about copybotting items, but something like this makes me want to learn, just so I could copy the item and then send them one to prove how stupid they are.

I don't mod my hair, but I have a couple of styles with those resizer scripts. They're extremely annoying, because I end up clicking the hair by accident many times a day and the stupid menu pops up. And people wonder why SL has such bad lag!

Added to my no-shop list as well, purely out of principle.

Alternative solutions to what? Not irritating your customers in vain hopes of protecting yourself against theft?

It is not difficult in the least to duplicate this hair if someone wanted to. A script that deletes it on rez is easy to get around, as people have explained in this thread.

There is NO, repeat, NO WAY AT ALL to prevent copying of content in SL except for scripts. Scripts are done completely server side so they are the only thing, so far, not sent to the viewer to be recompiled.

Anything that is rendered client-side can be copied.

There is no alternative solution. It's ALL bullshit. DRM DOES NOT WORK.

Copyright infringement is a social issue. Did I not hear you in Nobody Cares complaining that if Adobe charges 1500.00 for Photoshop they deserve to be pirated? You can't fight social problems with technical solutions.
