Teen & Adult Grids to merge

The merging of the grids, Teen and Main all in one | A Crimson world

"What was a rumour seems that will be a reality soon. Philip Linden in his interview in Metanomics yesterday and Blue Linden in this Plurk started by Damien Fate talked about it. Teen Grid and Main Grid will merge soon"

There are links there to the text of the actual announcement by Phillip himself.

I personally think this is a great idea since I'm building a new "AdultsOnly" grid.

I said it in the LL forums and I'll say it here. LL has taken it's management lessons from eBay, branching out where they shouldn't. Increasing fees for decreasing service. Restrictive payment options, etc.

It's a bad road for a lot of us to follow but LL is definately trying to position itself in a place that a lot of it's current userbase doesn't want to be.

So basically, business as usual but without the so called veil of 'protection'?

I would guess this will also mean the bring back of age verifying.

PHILIP ROSEDALE: Generally, I think that the future of Second Life needs to be one where people of all ages can use Second Life together, and that’s the direction that we’re taking in our planning and our work. I think that the educational opportunities for Second Life are so great for all ages that we need to make it as available as we possibly can to people. If you look at what we’ve done with the Teen Grid, I think we’ve done a good job, as a small company, of being inclusive and creating an environment in which teenagers were able to use Second Life, I think, perhaps earlier than, I don’t know, we might have been able to. We pushed hard to get that working.

But, if you look at the problems with having a teenaged area, which is itself so isolated from the rest of the World, they’re substantial. There’s an inability for educators to easily interact with people in there because we’ve made it an exclusively teen only area. Parents can’t join their kids in Second Life so problems like that are ones that we think are pretty fundamental and need to be fixed. We need to stop creating isolated areas that are age specific and, instead, look at how we can make the overall experience appropriately safe and controlled for everybody. So that’s the general direction that we’re taking there.

ROBERT BLOOMFIELD: Do you expect any official action or public notice on this anytime soon? And is the idea am I hearing you right that it would basically be to allow people of any age to come into at least some parts of Second Life? Is that what I’m hearing?

PHILIP ROSEDALE: Definitely. From my perspective, our long term strategy is that but I won’t make any specific “this is what’s coming next and that’s where you can expect it,” in that regard. We’re still working on how to do that and what to do next.
In other words.. We'd like to but we dont have a fucking clue how to do it because age verification failed.

Dont expect the merging anytime soon

This certainly seems like a prime opportunity for Media Pedo Hysteria 2: Electric Boogaloo, except this time it will be someone e-fucking an actual 13 year old, not some 40 year old pretending to be 13.

Cringe.

Edit: Wait, didn't they announce a grid merging as far back as 2006?

They have been talking about merging the grids for years now. We will see if it actually happens any time soon.

They merged right about the point they didn't bother to authenticate signups in any way.

That would bring a whole new meaning to the phrase about rats fleeing a sinking ship.

I would love to see them take bleach to SL and not expect a massive hemmorage to occur.

I don't believe even LL is stupid enough not to realize that the only reason they are still around is because of how few restrictions there are within the world. If a sanitized grid is what is wanted, everyone would be in There.

Not. Gonna. Happen.

With the freedom of content creation in SL, this would be an impossible task.

We did it all. Cocaine? We started that. You're welcome! What a great drug that was. Yeah, I'd like to do some cocaine. I'd like to do a drug that makes my penis small, makes my nose bleed, makes my heart explode, and sucks all my money out of the bank. Is that possible please!? I'd like to make this face all night! I'd like to sit in the bathroom and talk to a complete asshole stranger for seven hours on end. Is that possible please!? With no penis and a nose bleed! Where do I sign up!? Take my penis away!

I don't know, I think it's pretty rational to do a double-take when the head of creative direction and ex-CEO talks about "controlling" the overall user "experience." I also think he was either being irresponsible with his statements or he meant, quite literally, what he said. Considering the negative media exposure that LL has received in the past, failed age verification, the possibility of merging the teen and adult grid, and the legal ramifications of such an action, I think it is possible he meant exactly what he said. It has been pretty clear for the past couple years that his creative direction involves education, business, and corporate customers.

OK, ask yourself this- if age verification was the only issue, then why are adults not allowed on the teen grid?.

LL have a "PG" grid already, which they could have chosen to open up to all and expand accordingly. They won't let adults on it. Think about that for a bit.

It really all depends. This is entirely speculative, however, if he has it in his mind that:

1. Education could do much better if it weren't for the negative media image and the amount of sex related material in SL.
2. That Inworld business will evolve to sell other products and services.
3. That many would leave, however, new accounts would be gained because of the lack of adult material.
4. With the lack of adult material, other corporations will be more likely then they are currently to participate in SL.

There are a lot of conjectures here, but it is about trade-offs and his personal assessement of the situation and future direction for SL.

Considering his stated goal of fostering real world business and education in SL, I am not sure how to take the original statement.

Plenty of corporations have been in SL.

The corporate experience inn SL, wasn't a matter of sex putting them off...
it was sims no one was interested in going to that put them off.
