Is Second Life a Real World?

I found this question very interesting in the "What is FIC?" thread, so I thought I'd conduct a scientific poll on the question.

Some people believe Second Life is simply a service provided by Linden Labs. Other people think Second Life is an actual world, with all the merits and flaws that brings with it.

What do you think, and why?

Second Life reminds me more of a large virtual Rotary Club than a virtual world.

I voted Yes. But I wouldn't call it a real world in the same as I would call the world a real world. Just a different real world.

Second Life is the wet dream of a postmodern PT Barnum. Created by a company who wants to rule teh intarwebz, it's marketed as a game...then as a virtual world...then as a three-d web browser...then as a game platform...then as a way to make money while sitting on your ass...then as a way to fly and have magical sex with elves and donkeys...all while it's still a fucking piece of buggy beta-ware that we're all playtesting for uncle Phil for free.

The seductive, beautiful genius of this ongoing scam just makes me HARD. I'm going to go touch myself, now.

I voted a service, many people make a living off the service and I think its a liberating and enabling service but no "other world". ... but only because there was no option for Doll's Tea Party

...which is the closest it ever gets to another world

I voted NO because in most context, it is a virtual world and not a real world. It’s easy to blur the line between the two but that’s a result of our need to place things in neat little piles for our psyche to absorb. We pick up and respond to all the cues that the real world throws out at us because some very talented and imaginative people were able to mimic those cues. Is it real? No more then the image that I see in the mirror looking back at me.
The image is real, but the mirror reflecting that image is just providing a service.

Unless something I do in it sustains my actual body or consciousness, then its not a world. It can be a platform, a community, or a product, or a game, but its not a world in anything but the poetic, euphemistic sense of the term.

It's not a real world until there are taxes, laws, a court system and police.

Until then, it's simply a service provided by LL which I pay to use.

Their world, I imagine.

Second Life is a world, it has to be. Just because you could pull the plug and stop it doesn't disqualify SL. You could just as easily turn on the Hadron Collider in this world to pull the plug.

Science FTW!

Yeah, but it still beats (pardon the pun) an average night of prime time television.....

But the race is more closely run when you compare it to the sticky delights of downloading amateur russian porn.

There's something about the way those middle-aged housewives groan out "yaw yaw YAW" that just presses ALL my damn buttons.

*shudders*

No right vote choice there for me, quite.

I'd say it is not the world, or the real world. (no kidding)

But it is a virtual world, and a real virtual world.

The internet is not a virtual world.

WOW is a virtual world.

Amazon.com is not a virtual world.

Second Life is a virtual world.

CharterSucks cable is not a virtual world.

TSO is a virtual world.

None of them is the real world.

LL provides the virtual taxes, virtual law, and virtual police for this virtual world.

P.S. M&M's!

They're part of the real world though Coco. Seriously, logging into Second Life is like going to church, or attending a weekly luncheon or monthly rave party. It's a lot like shopping at Walmart which entails speaking to half the people I know, browsing bookshelves, hacking a few minutes at a video game demo, actual shopping (maybe), using the ATM. None of these places or activities constitute a world; but they're all part of my real life, participating in Second Life and all.
