Even though educational budgets are squeezed these days, it seems unlikely that cost alone has dictated this scaling down. Once again, it reflects the fact that not only individual but also institutions are losing faith and trust in Second Life and Linden Lab.
I'm kind of finding it hard to be angry at Linden Lab over the pricing re-structures. People were abusing the Open Space thing, and LL is supported by investors just as much as by tier. I imagine those investors are scrambling, themselves, to cover commitments and scaling back as well. LL is probably in the same boat as Princeton.

Actually, it is the Princeton Voids that are being de-commissioned - as far as I can tell, the full sims are staying.

But the art installations located on the voids will go.

AM Radio is not (as far as I know) leaving SL or ceasing to create new installations. But The Quiet, in its present form, is going.

That's a shame, but they definitely should back up the assets with Second Inventory... and perhaps set up in one of the OpenSim grids?

BTW, all Ivy League colleges are currently tightening their belts - trust me, I just started working for one the day before the hiring freeze went into effect! Expenses like SL and free pizza lunches will be the first to go.

It is just the voids, Princeton are still very active on SL.

How are you gonna work tweed jackets with suede elbow patches into your goth wardrobe?

Hehehehe, I'm actually a pretty spiffy dresser when I'm not doing my yearly "dress like my avatar" thing at SLCC.

Tweed jackets ain't never going to happen. I'm still a geek - just a geek in Wharton Computing.

The Quiet is gone, Husk will go next as NMC is also leaving.

What will remain is "The Refuge & Expansion", "Radio" (all three on Walsh Springs Sim) and the other part of "Radio" that has all the radio signal dishes (just like a SETI kind of set up). I also believe that unless only there for a predetermined time slot, "Beneath the Tree That Died" will also remain up hosted by University of Kentucky.

According to AM he has done several sims before these and plans to do others afterwards.

Check out the Radio sim, he currently had auctions that benefitted the American Cancer Society running and as always anything he has for sale at his vendors benefits Heifer International.

We don't actually wear tweed jackets; we just leave them hanging on the rack where they've been for a hundred years. My office has a fabulous old library card catalog cabinet that I use to store CDs, parts and tools. The decoration is mostly plants, stuff from HK, and a few hangings I've picked up here and there including a map of the Underground (old one when Jubilee terminated at Charing Cross) that people think is some kind of modern art ha ha ha.

Come to think of it, that jacket probably doesn't even fit. I've only had it cleaned and rehung, never tried it on. Good Heavens, does this thread have a topic?

I still have a hard time feeling that LL didn't screw up royally and bring this upon themselves when they increased the prim limit to 3,000+. How can you tell customers they can use that many prims and then call it abuse?

Your car's speedometer probably goes to at least 100 mph (160 kph) but that doesn't make it ok to drive that fast.

The speedometer is a bad analogy. It's more like buying a house of a certain amount of square feet and then told that you're doing something wrong by using all the rooms.

NMC is leaving too? If that is true then I take that as a death knell for any serious academic use of Second Life as a platform.

Aimee the reality of academia versus the fantasy is why I stopped 12 credits shy of coursework for PhD (would still have oral exam and dissertation--so it sounds close but wasn't) to take my Masters and run.

Oh also the fact that in my early 30's I was sick of living like a teen eating turkey franks all week cause they were 2 for 1 on sale and also the only women I was meeting were 8-12 years younger and who weren't impressed by my lack of flash at the time

Oh that plus most academia I met sucked and had never been in the real world. The way some of these martinets treated their admins and grad students was appaling. The fact that some of them used thweir positons to get sex from students was also appalling.

Oh and one more thing, having an original idea or view in grad school is the kiss of death. Parrot you advisors, get your degree, then you can be unusual with your own ideas

Don't get me started on tenured profs ...
