It's not all that fun but the next widely-celebrated holiday in the US will be Thanksgiving, in late November, and that's usually a two-day family affair including family reunions, big meals, liquor consumption, arguments, violence, etc.---all very depressing stuff. So, folks kind of fortify themselves with Halloween fun.

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year (even though it isn't really a holiday). It is a day when imagination is celebrated, much like every day in Second Life. Adults become kids again, and people get to live out their fantasies that are all too often repressed in this country. The children have a blast, and the adults have a blast right alongside them. Boys dress as girls. Girls dress as boys. People dress as animals. It often teaches people to appreciate difference a bit more - how often does a football jock get to appreciate what women go through with runners in their stockings or navigating a pair of high heels?

The best parties of the year are also around Halloween, just because of the general freakiness of it. It is America's carnivale, or Mardi Gras. I'm going to be dressed up tonight with Jenn in our house, giving out candy to the neighborhood kids. I'm thinking I might dress as the lead singer of Def Leppard, or something. Who knows - we'll see what mood strikes tonight!

Regards,

-Flip

You're kidding, right? Halloween is now a huge holiday, second only behind Christmas in event-specific retail sales (costumes, candy, etc.). Just about every neighborhood in the U.S. has Halloween parties, many businesses have costume and decorating contests--participation is high. As you pointed out indirectly, Halloween fills a holiday void between Summer's last hurrah (Labor Day) and late November's Thanksgiving. But more to the point, Halloween is all about fun with no real family obligations (travel to see relatives, etc.). It's a chance to dress up and act out your favorite fantasy or be a superhero in acetate tights. It's the yearly pass to gorge on your favorite sweets.

I'm not a huge particiapnt myself, but it's fun even for bystanders.

Me being a 'merkun, lemme explain. We dress up as monsters, stuff ourselves with treats and alcohol and then have sex with strangers.
This is an ancient and honorable tradition, brought to our country by the first white settlers, and then taught to their indian friends. But the indians were sad, so the white people killed them with Jesus.
Luckily Custer died for all our sins at the Little Big Matterhorn. There is a ride named after him at Walt Disney Land.

SO...to make a long story short. We have Halloween because of the Louisiana Purchase, where Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson screwed the French out of their share of manifest destiny.

Suckers.

I was gonna click the Thank button for you, Archer, but your explanation wasn't Hallmark greeting card-esque enough, and could not bring myself to ruin it.

Basically, Hallowe'en is the one day of the year that straight people do drag.

Really, it's just a night where people feel more free to express themselves through costumes, antics, etc. Children go trick-or-treating, while adults usually have costume parties where people try to out-do each other in dressing up in crazy outfits.

While the rest of us sing and dance beneath an eldritch moon, calling out ecstatically to our dread lord Cthulhu, who in R'lyeh lies dreaming...
