The Linden chalet thing in Wengen. I go back occasionally to look at it. I remember walking about inside it bumping into things, and people spinning about on chairs outside. It's in the middle of nowhere, so flying about left me thinking there wasn't anywhere to go.

Isobel...
I remember flying away from the infohub and having my first run-in with a naked guy
And I still had it set as my home until I rented some land in Nov 07.

"I did the whole OI/Ahren route" Same, Wengen! I would have loved that and prob not just wander around for a week to come back almost 3 months later to stay. I peek at the WAs, I like to ppls watch half afk and some of ppls that I met when I was new are still standing there.

That's probably because you have it set as your profile pic, but not as your avatar.

I joined in 2004. I did the Orientation Island thing and the parrot thing and the alt+zoom sign thing, and then I teleported to Ahern where people like FlipperPA were still hanging around chatting. My first mentor was James Miller (Hi hello)!

Little did I know that this fascinating game would change my life. How did that happen?

Like most people, I appeared on OI. The OI has changed little since I started five years ago. Noobs used to be able to earn a few Lindens while doing the tutorial.

I spent my first night playing with my appearance. On the 2nd day, I did the tutorial, and lost a night's worth of work because I didn't save before trying the appearance tutorial. At the end of the tutorial, I saw another av. Up to that point I was alone on OI or not aware of others.

I teleported to Ahern. Back then, there was no big Welcome Area. Just grassy hills, a path with signs along it and the Event Board. One of the signs was used to post that week's "Avatar of the Week". There was another sign for "Mentor of the Week". Most days, SL had one event per hour, and those events were posted daily on the Event Board. The board also gave notecards. If I recall correctly, Char Linden personally put that day's notecards in the board most days. I suspect that Ahern became a popular hangout mostly due to the Event Board being located there. If you had not visited the board, you could wait for the grid wide Linden event announcements every hour.

Anyway, Ahern was empty, save for one early resident who flew by wearing a Neo av. I found more people, and the main gathering spot in SL, Stage 4. Stage 4 was located at the intersection of Ahern, Bonifacio, Dore and Morris. There is a copy of Stage 4 in (I think) DeHaro. I found a building class and created a few textured prims.

To this day, I still look in on the Ahern Welcome Area practically every day.

Me too, none of this parrot or beachball nonsense, literally all there was was a path and a sign. Which I didn't read. But I could see other sims on the horizon so I flew off and cruised around the mainland a bit.

The place I really feel like I was "born" was the Isle of Wyrms Back when it was just two sims. I had been wandering around Abranimations and someone was wearing her hydra avi, I thought that they were a statue with someone standing inside it until they moved. So they gave me an LM and little newbie Siyu spent almost all her time there. It was there that I actually got serious about staying in SL, since before that I barely logged in for two or three weeks after signing up.

With all the lag, it was a slow tumble, right?

Remember the blue event notices that used to pop up on the screen on the hour, every hour? Can you imagine the furor if LL did that now?!?

Orientation Island for me too and I remember having to pass 4 tests. But what I remember best is arriving at Nano Gunk first thing as soon as they released me from OI. They were very newbie friendly. I got some nice freebie clothes and most important a whole bunch of LMs organised by category which helped be get started very quickly.

Thread Title of the Week
Plum (I think?) on my first account... then the OLDDDD Ahern with nimrod yaffle (I think?). I remember a Linden being there saying hello to people as they rezed.

I remember going to Morris and making a (what I thought was) a very cool wand. It had a crystal at the top, and particle effects. I sold it for $10 (in the sandbox, I started breaking rules early). Then I remember some jerk coming and saying it was easy to make, and not worth $10. So he made one next to mine and sold it for $1.

After I made about L$100, I found Busy Ben's lot. I bought a green bug hovercraft that I LOVED. Something happened at a border crossing and I lost it. I spent my whole month's earnings on it, and I lost it!!

I think it was in Ritch. I'm pretty sure Ahern didn't have a welcome area yet.

This is the welcome area on my first day.

A view overlooking Boardwalk from my first parcel.

The first full build I ever made.

Hehe, check out how many buttons there are on this viewer!

I had to dig out an old drive to find the folder with these pictures. In that folder was this file:

Second Life 0-7-2 Beta Setup.exe

I iz packratz.

That shot of the Boardwalk is near my home. I miss the flying saucer and submarine. They were landmarks that helped me find my parcel. I still own that land after five years.
