Role Play in SL?

So i was randomly tping into places yesterday and i stumbled across a few of role play Sim's. It kinda got me thinking that most of them seem too be Gor based or at least violent with lots of guns and fighting and not much else going on.

Now i come from a background of playing RPG games like Final Fantasy and Star Ocean etc. So i have a little question for all you role players out there.

If i decided too join a role-play sim I'd like something that is not just forever fighting, I'd like something with a little interaction but not like in Gor where I'm limited too two roles. I like the idea of the choice between human, neko, vampire etc.

Is there any Sim's out there that are like this? where role play is actual role play and not just a sim masquerading as a fighting simulation?

The only one I've found that's not Gor based, that isn't focussed on combat (though there is some, in the form of contests, if you're interested) and actually isn't just an empty sim all the time, is Avilion. It's pure Fantasy; Medieval with Elves, Fae, Dragons etc. And at least one hobbit, now.

Everywhere else I've seen is either all combat, or totally abandoned.

Deadwood has excellent roleplay - but it's strictly historical, so you can't be whatever you want. There are some very good players there, and combat does not predominate.

I recently found one that is based on Anne Mcaffrey's books "Dragonriders of Pern". Its a bit on the beggining and they are reorganizing things because with this openspace increase they have to let go 3 islands, but for those who like the books (like me) its an interesting place.

And people there are really nice, explaining the RP and showing around the sims!

Lewis - I've heard of Avilon and i had a little visit earlier but it's not really my cup of tea i'm afraid. ty for the tip though.

Ned - Deadwood sounds interesting, i'm guessing that your part of the group so what roles can you play?

Tary - I've never actually heard of those books lol, would you reckon i'd need too read the books before playing or could i just jump in and what are the books about?

Asher - lol i'll try and keep you informed, fingers crossed i'll find something. I think my main issue is me living in the UK i've noticed many places are pretty dead until quite late and by that time i'm up at the club i work at dancing lol.

When you come to the grand gate at Avilion, hopefully there is a greeter there, check for the Greeter of Avilion group tag. This person is a volunteer and will usually be happy to tell you about Avilion, and has some experience with the role play. They will also ask you politely, if you are in a tee shirt and jeans, to change to medieval dress, free clothes are available at the entrance.

As someone who has role played in Avilion for over a year and a half, my comment is its a medieval/fantasy society. As a society, just dropping by and visiting means you are an outsider. You will be welcomed, and people will be friendly and polite, but you need to find a place in the society to be part of it. Avilion separates combat from the other activities by limiting it to 2 sims Isle and Nexus, and further limiting it by not requiring a meter be worn on either sim. Role play varies, depending on who is around and what may be in progress. Someone may come in complaining of illness or injury, and the druids will respond with what may be a spontaneous role play. Avilion has many activities, there is story telling, theatre, combat classes, role plays, and even full wars with teams. Role play also varies, some people are very good at it, others really are not too sure of what to do. The druids are some of the best role players, they often have situations presented in classes they have to rp through to a conclusion.

Avilion is also an extremely polite society. This may throw you off at first, as people are usually very polite to a stranger, but are doing a certain amount of role playing with each other. The little fae with the smart mouth that is making trouble is a pixie, making trouble is part of their role play. The dragon thats acting moody, its a dragon, they can be that way. Most people play out of some part of their presonality. You have to work your way into the role play, or go play the drums, I do this when I have had a bad day.

If you want to role play in Avilion, work on a good history for your character. The people who do the best with role play have a story for their character and play out of the story, it defines your character. There is the other society in Avilion, heavily oriented to combat classes and Calls to Arms and not so much to role play. This is similar to the combat role play sims. There are combat classes, rangers, knights, magi, druids, and rogues, each with their own capabilities and weapons. A number of people do both, they like role play and they also can enjoy a battle or combat.

Avilion also has a history, there is a library with stories and biographies, as well as histories of the events that are the basis of the society. We have fun, but it takes a while to get into the society.

I am Ranger of the Order and Bard of the Order, and yes you can contact me.

Haruka - I am there on my alt, Beathag McMahon, as the schoolmarm.
The best way to find out about them is through their forum
The Road to Deadwood - Index.

Although they strive for historical accuracy, they do allow women to play roles that would not have been available to women.

There are two sims. One is Yankton, Dakota Territory, 1877. It's OOC. You can pick up the freebie pack and information, or shop.
The other is Deadwood itself. It is completely IC. There are no observer tags, and you must be a group member, wearing a group tag, to go. You also are required to wear a combat meter, even if you never partake in combat.

Midian City is pretty good, they have combat, but wearing a combat hud is entirely optional. most people just equip them for "duels".

Everything is 100% concentual no forced anything.

Because of the lack of open combat the verbal RP is usualy very good. I played in Norsim for a while, but found most people there liked to Shoot first then RP with your corpse...

Its sort of a post apocolyptic city with factions like Vampires, Nekos' etc...

The two that I have been involved with are City of Lost Angels (CoLA) and Midian.

CoLA is set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where humans and other mortals try to eek out a survival among the city's other denizens. Roleplay is encouraged and appreciated by all there, but CoLA is a CCS-environment so you will need to wear a CCS-meter (which is free, BTW) if you wish to get involved in combat or confrontational play. The staff tries to administer the environment so that the RP isn't squashed by combat-happy players but combat does sometimes outshine the roleplay. Races supported by the setting include human, neko, vampire, demon, angel, lycan, supernatural (which is a sort of catch-all allowing other races such as hybrids, sidhe/fae, reptilian, etc). Creativity is encouraged and the RP environment is free-form so all types of roleplay styles are seen. Players are encouraged to develop their own stories but the staff do also drive citywide stories. Be sure to pick up both a meter and a login to the supporting website as it details the rules and instructions for the meter. Note that I am a staff member for CoLA so consider this when reading my description.

The other area that I have played in is Midian, which was described above. Midian is certainly more roleplay-centric and less metered combat so it is a good fit for those that aren't entirely interested in combat though roleplayed skirmishes are occasionally done and are done quite nicely. The setting is again, post-war, the island being an area that was long abandoned by what was left of earth's civilization. The best way to think of the environment is almost Bladerunner-esque with a nice accent of vampires and nekos. For the vampiric roleplay, the sim supports and in some cases enforces a Masquerade for the vampires. For those that aren't privy to White Wolf's Vampire the Masquerade/World of Darkness theme, the vampires are set to conceal their existence from the rest of the population. The sim staff actively supports this so any that wish to play as a vampire character have to speak to staff in order to get blessing to play that type in the sim. It is really just a check built-in to foster this type of play and to ensure that roleplayed abilities and powers are not abused.

Both are "Dark RP" areas which means that pretty much any and all types of play can be found, i.e., kidnap, torture, sex, etc, with CoLA probably having a bit more of an "adult/mature" theme to it, but all that sort of RP can be found in Midian as well. When comparing the two, I think of CoLA as having a bit more of a supernatural feel to it since there are demons and angels involved along with magic play sprinkled in, whereas Midian is more futuristic technology driven with the added element of vampires.

Hope that at least helps expose other areas for folks.

Nobody said there was anything wrong with it.

But's what's wrong with having role-play that has little or none?

Naraka seems to be rather ok as well, from the few times I've visited. And while they sorta-kinda support Nekos, they do ask that you don't try to roleplay a cat in a human body, or a person with a cat mentality. The term they use is Hybrid if I'm not mistaken, and that in essence is a geneticly modified human who posseses some animal characteristics. It's another Furturistic "Dark RP", but done rather nicely with a quite fun backstory in my opinion.

NARAKA: Welcome to Naraka...

hehehe, when Pure Combat opened up, which is a combat sim with no RP, Jag put in the notecard:

"No roleplaying is needed or necessary here. You don't need a long backstory about how a Werewolf ate your baby to shoot someone here."

But yes, I do understand the desire for non-combat RP. That being said, my experience in most places is that you can usually set the DCS and CCS meters to noncombatant and still participate in RP (but you're not allowed to try to start an RP fight with a noncombatant meter, usually).

In addition to Deadwood, there's also Tombstone Arizona, with a couple of sims around it. You're required to wear a combat meter, but there is a rule that nobody is allowed to try to engage in combat with anyone who is not armed. However, I've noticed in the times that I've been there that the bank tends to get robbed at least 3 or 4 times a day.

Midian sounds quite good not really had a look around yet though, kept on crashing for some reason tonight so gonna leave SL for a bit and try again later.

Tried too get into Crack Den but as i'm under 14 days i can't enter lol. I think i might wait and just explore, i'd like too look around Crack Den before i make a formal decision so too speak.

I had a look at Deadwood's forum and i don't really think it would be my cup of tea after all. I'm don't know much about the old west lol and not really fussed about it really.

I think a more Urban type might be more me, i can dress how i like and not worry about costumes etc.

I am familiar with Terabithia and a friend of the sim owner. Terabithia has some very good role players. It is Medieval/Fantasy and has dragons, fae, elves, drow, humans, and there may be a few others. It is an always-wear-a hit-meter set of sims, which means there is always the potential for combat, and the drows go maurauding in SL night. They also socialize with ooc events where they all party together. If wearing a meter all the time is your style with some potential for attack from hostiles, it is definitely worth looking into, the people are friendly, the sims are relatively new, but a lot of the people are ones who left Azuria when the sim owners changed the role play, so they have been playing longer than the age of the sims.

Garth Goode just made note of Black Dove Heartland: "Many roleplay areas I encounter are rather bleak, so when I landed in Black Dove Heartland it was refreshing. It’s an old English village, populated by friendly and engaging folk."

And I'm led to understand there's some active RPing in the Eudeamon story setting - an excellent sci-fi tale that's much more than the fetish yarn it might at first appear.
