Curious about being a Neko?

I just wanted to humbly mention that I put together a story based on feedback from my blog readers, detailing "how to be a Neko." It's nuttin fancy, but (typical A.R. me) it *is* detailed, lol.

I've been slowly putting together all sorts of resource pages (Neko skins, Neko ears and tails, Neko clubs, etc.) because when I first got curious about the Neko thing, I couldn't find anything in SL blogs (outside of an occasional outfit, or a fashionista blogger wearing ears and a tail for a day).

Anyway, I digress.... Check it out if you are curious (human or wanna-be Neko), and let me know whatcha think:

How To Be A Neko « Virtual Neko in Second Life

(Yeah, yeah, I know, some of you think Neko is weird... s'okay, I can handle the pressure, lol)

I actually do have a neko skin in my inventory that's just plain gorgeous! I really like those things. :X I'm gonna look at the stores listed in that other entry you listed about skins. Thanks for linking us to that. It was a good read.

Nekos are fun. I love going neko from time to time when I need a change of pace. I just wish people were more open to it. It bugs the hell out of me when I go to a place and there's a stupid "no furry/no neko allowed" sign. Or someone wants to make fun of the choice of skin I have. What's wrong with being a leapoard neko? That's one of those times where there was a script I could create where you can bite them and they get notified that they have rabies.

I was chatting with someone who knows quite a bit about the subject of Nekos, especially as it applies to Japanese/anime culture. She pointed out that in a male, neko features are an outward symbol of femininity and submissiveness. She said she found it an amusing contradiction to see big masculine guys pushing loads of attitude, and wearing kitty ears and tail. I thought "bugger that", and decided that Neko would not suit me.

I agree with you whole heartedly about the hair/ear issue. Since my first day as a neko, I have hidden my human ears by only purchasing hair that hides them. Also, setting the human ears to size zero helps this along especially if you have to modify your hair.

Anyway, thanks fot the great work.

Slick has a really nice selection of gorgeous kitty eyes. I wear the 'New Growth' from the Rumpleteazer collection. You get a whole variety of colors for a really good price in one pack and they are drawn from real life cat eyes.

Also, thanks for the tip about the human ears. I had always just ignored them, but after taking a good hard look today I realized how silly human ears on a neko look, heh. Setting them to zero and hiding them with hair is a good idea. Of course some wigs I wore previously are now out but oh well.

You might enjoy the "pounce" attachment, its like a hug but you pounce on your victim like a cat, they fall to the ground with you pinning them down. Fun stuff.

You are right about this, in fact its very rare to see a neko to be a male in amine at all.

Right from Wikipedia's definition of Neko:
In Japanese gay slang, neko is equivalent to Hurosoma, i.e the more feminine member of a lesbian relationship, as well as the equivalent to bottom, or passive partner in a male homosexual relationship (especially in terms of Nekomata, a Japanese mythological cat creature)

Note that this is only in "gay slang" though it's not saying all Neko's portrayed in Amine are submissive homosexuals.

Been done, MD/ND makes a neko 6000 AV and Curious Kitties has a tiny neko robot av, and I have also seen some Neko's with "android" type skins running around as well.

Your list of places to find neko parts omits some of the best scripted ears/tails; OCTR (Anisa Naumova); pricey compared to most others, but better than almost all others I've found, too (the ears perk in response to someone 'talking', that is, typing something in local chat, and move independently depending on which side the chat is coming from).

Yeah, but it's Second Life..."traditionally, Neko blah blah blah" means next to nothing. I'm fairly certain that my version of Neko doesn't fit the anime guidelines either, but that's not the point...it's what makes me happy in SL.

Also, if I love a hair, I'm not going to let exposed human ears prevent me from wearing it.

Hehe, Ann. That's one of the more irritating things for me because until just recently, if the hair didn't cover my human ears and I couldn't mod it, it was a no-go. I passed over a lot of very nice hairstyles. Now however, I can shift into my other form, my pixie... that has attached ears as well, but this time fitted over the human ears.

Another benefit of being a neko, and I'm certain this is just old news for other avies needing attached components to achieve their Second Look is the exchange of various attachment points for accessories. My look has some pretty constant features that as a neko, I just do not compromise on, i.e., if I cannot have these things on, then potential newer accessory gets left behind. This leads to being able to decide to fit the piece onto another attachment point ans still look good in terms of the movement of the avie's skeleton. For instance:

  • Ears (L and Right Ear) -- So far, if something needs to attach to BOTH of these points, and cannot be modded onto my neko ears (Anisa's neko ears, which ARE moddable), I don't get them. But, if they only need to attach to one of these, the alternative is one of the other head attachment points: Mouth, Chin, Nose. All three of these are pretty much coordinated with the movement of the avie's head and have no independent motion. At least, for the most part they dont.
  • Nose -- This is where I have my Mekan whiskers. If something needs to go here, I generally try to attach it to my chin of if not there, my mouth.
  • Chin -- I typically wear things that might fit on my head on this attachment point. Any head gear such as goggles, helmets that arent a part of the hair I'm wearing, etc.
  • Mouth -- I typically wear a set of lip piercings on this point but as with the two above, items can be exchange with these in temrs of attachment points and a little effort in attachment positioning.
  • Chest -- I have my collar attached here which also contains my AO so I have to have this attached. The closest attachment point that shares the same avie movement is the spine, though at times, if the head is turned or the neck is bent, it can get sort of strange.
  • Spine -- A reasonable alternative for the Chest point.
  • Stomach -- This is where my Hybrid Tail sits and is pretty much a constant for me. Alternatively though, you can fit things that are meant for this spot onto your pelvis. The two are fixed on avie skeleton and move in the same fashion.
  • Pelvis -- Linked to the stomach and typically is used by me for any prim skirts I wish to wear. I have to typically decide to wear either my belly ring(s) or a prim skirt.
  • Hips (Left and Right) -- These two points move in sync with the upper leg attachment points and can be used for things that might need to attach to those. If I'm wearing some thigh straps or other things on my legs, I use these as alternatives.
  • Upper Legs (Left and Right) -- Same with hip points.
  • Shoulders (left and Right) -- These two point I never seem to have a conflict with so I haven't really investigated the alternatives, which might probably be the Pectoral points. Anyone know if they move in sync with the shoulders?

Anyhow, the point is with an avie that pretty much requires certain attachments, you have to learn alternative spots to attach them and do a bit of editing or if you cannot do this, you have to learn to sacrifice. At least that's been my own experience.

Edited to add in Spine and Chest points then edited again for craptastical spelling skills.

I like copyable tails here. One time adjustment to situate the copy on its new attachment point, then if a skirt, etc, defaults to one point, you can just attach the tail that defaults to the other.

My current tail is one from hybrid. I love it (a kitsune multiple actually) but the script wants it to attach to the stomach only ... was warned not to edit the attachment point.

I did the copy trick with my previous tail. It worked best at one point, but I made a variation if that point was taken (pelvis and stomach).

BTW, am I the only one who detests no-copy/no-mod? Either, but especially when combined. When I change my shape I sometimes need to change the size of various attachments I am wearing and like to have multiple copies (kid-sized, adult-sized, on-pelvis, on-stomach, etc).
