I agree - there's the obvious on either end of the extreme. I think you have to give people credit for being frustrated with Jaha, based on the way he approached this issue. That means that maybe the line is not a solid one, but it moves around depending on the situation.

I disagree with Beebo that he held his own. I think he approached this thread in a mean-spirited and nasty manner, attacking someone when she was clearly hurting, and he can argue semantics until he is blue in the face, and it won't resolve that. Now, using this thread to "build his balance" the way he has with the last several posts is painfully transparent. You can't start off in the thread like he did and then all of a sudden throw a switch and act like it never happened and all of a sudden it's all fun and games and chatting it up with people without looking completely disingenuous. It's just one big bucket of fail. He may have held his ground, but he never should have tried to hold it the way he did. It was weak.

I hope he makes a comeback, makes a sincere apology, and proves that my initial impression about him is completely wrong. I'd like to end up liking the guy. He actually reminds me of someone.

This thread has been both interesting and thought provoking. We have some competing opinions by various people who are almost universally respected here; Beebo, Trout, Surreal and Madhu to just name a few.

Several people, myself included, pointed out to Sarah that her use of the "F" word while arguably justified may not have been the smartest thing to do, tactically in that situation.

Most of the people who have been here a while were gentle and considerate in their comments to Sarah, probably for a variety of reasons. Jahar, initially wasn't. His first posts brought down varying degrees of wrath from other SLU-ers.

Surreal raises a good point about a sort of SLU double standard. She's quite right and I have both witnessed it and been the target of it myself, in the past.

Beebo's thoughts about people "banking" a certain amount of good will or license was very good - a hit in the nine ring, ten being the bull's eye. She's quite correct up to a point. Most of us have varying amounts of good will in our respective banks, ranging from, let's say 0 to 500. There a few though who are "independantly wealthy" and have unlimited funds. These are people who from their unfailing good natures, intelligence, civility, kindness and, for want of a better word, just downright goodness are pretty much "bullet proof." I'm sure I'm leaving out a couple or three, but as examples, Sarah Nerd, Beebo, and Brig would fall into that category. They are bullet proof in that [1] they have EARNED it; [2] even if they are completely 100% wrong on something, any disagreements will be extremely courteous; [3] they never sought to be bullet proof; and [4] if anyone, be they completely new or an established persona here, would have a real fight on their hands if they behave rudely toward them.

Jahar's big mistake was disagreeing with Sarah in a fairly rude fashion. The simple fact is that Sarah is one of the few who are universally loved, admired and respected by the overwhelming majority, if not 100%, of the SLU community. For example, I think many of Sarah's defenders were WAY more upset about Jahar's...unfortunate choices of words, than Sarah was herself.

I, for one, am delighted that for the most part, some irritating and emotional issues were discussed here with a relatively high degree of civility. We are getting better at this, six months ago this would have denegrated into an all flame war. I think we are all fortunate indeed to have good people like Surreal, Beebo, Trout, Madhu and so many others who are functioning as sort of role models for us all on how to behave - how to disagree, even passionately, without resorting to personal attacks.

Soooooo, sorry for the long winded post, but I am greateful that thse people, plus a few more, are actually succeeding in changing what was, to me anyway, a culture where hostility and lack of reason was seen as cool.

Thank you,

Sooz

I have earned my stripes and few scars as well working tech support.
I am not really sure if I would just shrugged it off if someone
had dropped the F bomb on me.

I understand being frustrated but as Psyke said. I don't get paid enough
to be talked to that way. We did delete accounts because of it.

The problem with providing any type of tech support is the end user thinks
you are personally responsible for what ever went wrong.
Ranging from they forgot their password to lightning hit the T-1 line.

I like Sarah I enjoy her posts and I respect the fact she can make a living selling
make believe land. There is no need for that type behavior.
The person on the other end is another human being who is trying to get
through the day as best they can.

It's rough to watch that shit, I know.

Roxie, with all due respect, bullshit.

Sarah did not say a goddamn thing to any fucking employee.

She said "fuck you LL" in a chatroom filled with angry customers, which isn't very different from you or I saying the same thing in a thread on a forum.

Any service rep who gets the vapors reading a hostile post directed at a company who just fucked over the people who pay your salary should be fired, period.

I've had a gun pulled on me in the course of my work so I do NOT want to hear this lame ass bullshit.

Before you know it it the story will be: did you hear Sarah Nerd slapped a 17 year-old intern to the ground for looking at her funny.

Enough already.

Oh, my friend, not a h8r. I just cringe to see the pretty boys getting all the attention. Clive is a decent bloke, but not tested in battle. Too many handlers and agents, I say.

I was recently in your area of the world. It is mighty impressive what the southern WA and northern OR regions have done with vineyards devoted to fine red wines. Mighty. At least what I remember...

So I'm just home from a party for a colleague that got a Great Job and will be leaving and the spirits were high (and flowing) and I totally read "funny" as a euphemism for "twatwaffle".

That, in a nutshell, is how odd up this world is. But in an ecstatic way.

The weather's just fine for drinking, so long as you can stay dry.

With 9 months of rain, people begin to make beautiful things. Why get cabin fever when you can brew, bottle, and refine fine things to pass the time.

I'm convinced that's why we have so many micro-breweries and vineyards.

I'm afraid that my temper tantrum seems to have clouded the point I was making about things being bleeding-fucking-obvious. I'll make it plain, I hope, for the benefit of the people whose opinion actually does matter to me (*waves to Surreal and Madhu and those that thought it but didnt say it) and to whom I sincerely regret coming across like I feel some kind of right to be abusive to ANYONE at SLU.

One of my pet peeves, which explains but does not excuse me losing my temper is the pointing out of the BFO. It is supercilious, arrogant, condescending and insulting. It indicates that the person pointing out the BFO believes that the target of their "lecture" is incapable of figuring out the BFO themselves. That is HIGHLY offensive. To add insult to injury, the person pointing out the BFO had been here for a heartbeat and going by previous posts in this thread, obviously did not know Sarah at all. So here was this heroic assumption that "I need to tell you how it is because you're so dumb you can't figure it out on your own". Well it made my blood boil...

I am sorry for the FU, but not the rebuke. I dont want to open up old wounds or continue a discussion that's now moved to a Happier Place. I do hope that I've given some context to my outburst and at least dispelled any perception that I feel justified in making abusive posts.

JA, your PM to me I still consider as lulz-worthy tonight as it did earlier today but I wont presume to expand on the deliciously BFO irony to you either, I am sure you can work that out for yourself. If you understand my point better now, well and good. If you don't *shrug*. I dont intend to continue debating either in public or private and I don't hold grudges, they are far too tiresome.

Oh, and FYI, I am *never* Ms. Dilweg. HRH Queen Mabb or The Divine Ms M: Godess of the Airwaves is how I am addressed by those who do not know Me. You may address Me as Your Majesty, for brevity's sake
