Criticism of LL's "business plan" if they even have one, their evident decision making process [See Trout's thread on this subject] and their low regard for their customers are perfectly valid areas of criticism.

One thing that seems to be missing at LL is what we lawyers call a "benefit v. burden analysis." In other words, if someone comes up with a bright idea, someone need to think about, "how will this impact our customers, if we do this and ultimately how will this impact our bottom line?" for example, it may seem like a great idea to raise tiers fees from, let's say $195 per sim to $250 per sim. Okay at first glance, great idea. BUT how many people, including SL businesses will just tier down or leave SL? Perhaps NOT a great idea. I'm sorry, but their decision making process sounds a LOT like my nine year old son's Little League team.

This is exactly the issue. Nobody is providing any strategic analysis of their decisions. I've had the really amazing experience of working with some amazing business people. Their success isn't rocket science. it's based on hard work and good decision making, and it all comes down to cost/benefit analysis. What's the cost of this decision versus what's the benefit. You don't always know the answer to those questions, so you really have to put some effort into what looks like a simple formula. You have to look at likely outcomes of the decision, both positive and negative, risks incurred, potential impacts on the competition's business, economic factors, etc...

A business the size of LL HAS to know this. They HAVE to. The only thing I can surmise is that they are so arrogant that they think they can ignore it. That's like an engineer deciding to ignore the basic laws of physics and wondering why his designs never work.

Look at the rules that they changed earlier this month on openspace transfers in the secondary market.

Used to cost $100 to transfer each openspace region. Since they are only worth $250 new, it was really never worth selling an openspace.

So to attempt to address this, they came up with a new fee scheme:

Up to 4 openspaces transferred in a single transaction is now $100. Additional openspaces are $100 each.

Well, that sounds better, but it still shows that they didn't even consider the consequences. If I want to transfer 6 openspaces to you, I can do it in one batch and pay $300, or I can transfer it in two sets of 3, and pay $200.

Likewise, it costs $150 to move an openspace, and $50 to rename it. So if I'm moving stuff around, it would cost $800 to move and rename 4 openspaces. However, if I sell them to my alt, it's $100 to sell 4 of them, which includes a move and rename.

I think it's pretty obvious that they just put very very little thought into these fee structures.

You've been here just over a month yet you think its appropriate to gift a long-time SLU member, veteran SL resident and highly successful SL business owner with your 20-20 hindsight on dealing with Linden Labs ?

This is exactly what's so frustrating about the whole thing. It is like recent witnesses to the huge, Mid September Metrolink train wreck when a local commuter line headed from LA to one of the north Western suburbs collided with a freight train.* They saw it was going to happen but of course were powerless to stop it. It has come to light that the engineer was TEXT MESSAGING just seconds before the accident and missed a siding, which he pulled into EVERY day at that time!!

Like Beebo, I initially thought the whole Tao of Linden thing was an actual joke. I don't feel so foolish now that someone as intelligent as Beebo thought the same thing.

Their corporate culture, whether by design or happenstance, seems to be , "Let's figure out how to SCREW the people who actually pay us." I hope some Lindens ARE reading this. Its only $125 per month but if I get banned, I can GUARANTEE that's the last dime they ever get from me....period.

If I tried to put that mish-mash into my annual goals (in my REAL job working for a REAL company), I'd be out on my ass so fast it'd make me dizzy.

After reading that when it was released, a big fat light bulb came on. I've never expected quite as much from them since then, and yet I've still been disappointed.
This is why your number of groups is still at 25. I can't imagine it would be hard to change - the size of an array I would guess - but not something very exciting to do. Just grunt work maintenance.
I have very limited experience with LSL, but I have been in IT for almost 30 years. I could probably do it in 4 hours - including testing.

The Tao of Linden was the turning point for me too. Up until that point, I thought it was possible that the problems were growing pains, then it became obvious that the fish rots from the head and I re-evaluated my investment in SL.

Eh, no it's not that. I don't want to drag this offtopic, but think about all the actions that require a group perm check. Like simply flying across some parcel edges.

Good point.

Ok, back to important things - like Sarah falling out of the limo Brenda's driving, with no panties on.

Inquiring minds want to know two things:
1. Where are Sarah's panties?
and, equally important,
2. Where are Brenda's.
