I've not been posting for a few days because I am a tad sniffly and you know when a man gets a cold it has to be treated like double pneumonia (at the very least, with probably a touch of black death thrown in for good measure). HOWEVER I simply had to respond to this travesty.

A few months back, (or however long it is since LL announced their new openspace policy/pricing), LL in one fell swoop almost ruined Sarah's business along with many other landlords/estate owners. Who in their right mind would want to rent a quarter sim, with neighbours when for the same tier they could have an entire sim with privacy and the same prim count. Back then Sarah and her peers were justifiably annoyed. FUCK YOU said LL. This is how it is going to be....get on with it.

So ever resourceful, Sarah (along with many of her peers) completely altered their business model. Converting full islands into open spaces and buying new ones in order that they could salvage their business in some form or another. LL could not fail to recognise what was happening. It was after all the only viable thing for estate owners to do, or be left with empty regions which still need to be paid for every month. I would go so far as to say that LL actively encouraged this as the way forward for estate owners. They even brought in additional, new measures to help facilitate this... i.e. the transfer owner to payer option.

For them to turn around now and say that ANYONE abused the situation is a second FUCK YOU from LL. They have happily taken the orders (and the fee's), happily taken the tier every month, so to say they were unaware of the problem this might cause down the road is simply naive. At best it is rank opportunism on their part.

So they announce that we are all rather naughty boys and girls and that to chastise us they will increase tier and set-up fee's by insane amounts and look smart at doffing your cap and tugging your forelock in future thank you very much. (I think Jahar is working overtime on that one btw. Keep doffing and tugging Jahar.....LL will still hate you as much as the rest of us but at least you will know you did your best )

soooo Sarah and her Peers are now left to wade through the mire of this latest LL brainwave and try to salvage their businesses all over again, less than six months after the last time. A third FUCK YOU from LL.

For Sarah to say what she did in concierge chat is not only justified it is bloody well long overdue. If any excuse were needed it could be argued that it is simply learned behaviour! They have been fucking us so long it was only a matter of time until one of us wanted to fuck them back Bravo Sarah.

Meaning no offense to Sarah, but this thread has given me sympathy for those who say that people with a dissenting opinion get beaten down here.

I have a visceral response to a lynch mob, even a virtual one. Goodness knows that I've shot Linden Lab the finger several times. Last time I was in San Francisco, I offered to deliver a help ticket wrapped around a brick through a window.

But honestly, this thread is making me feel queasy.

I know a few Lindens. Not in that "zOMG, I know a Linden, I'm so fucking special" kind of way, but just because I'm old like dirt.
There are even a couple of folks who read/post on SLU in their regular identities who are Lindens. I can't help thinking of them when I read that it's OK and even righteous to verbally abuse the Lindens, because Linden Lab is EVIL.

I don't buy into the relativistic school of behavior. Someone else's crappy behavior isn't an excuse for me to emulate them. It's evident that's not a popular stance.

What I'd like to see is everyone here who has called for the blood of the Lindens, sitting down and writing an e-mail to LL stating their opposition and objections to this policy. It might not be as warm and fuzzy as a forum fuck you, but it would be more likely to have some effect.

I guess I'm going to see now how my street cred at SLU is.

Im guessing that as upset as I am with the new open sim policy changes (I abandoned one of my openspaces this morning)...that many of the ppl who work for LL and who have had nothing to do with this policy will be equally upset. Whoever banned you Sarah was probably as upset about the fallout from this policy as everyone else.

I doubt that anyone who directs their comments at 'The Lindens' or 'Linden Lab' is consciously directing them at every single LL employee - they're just terms used in the absence of anything better to describe 'those responsible for this or that decision/action'.

It's a real shit thing that you got banned Sarah, but I am glad you're back.

I always feel like long term developers, and contributors to SL are being punished, whenever LL gets heavy handed with situations like this. Jack Linden insists it's not punishment (somewhere in the boring forums), but it's the people who give the most to SL that feel the effects hardest financially, and emotionally because we care about our hobbies, jobs, sweet sweet addictions.

I think LL should start playing favorites, but not to whoever can throw the most money at the lab, but residents who have worked long and hard to promote SL in one form or another. They should start with reputable estate owners and content developers like Sarah Nerd, who probably is responsible for educating, introducing, and retaining a lot of SL user accounts on her own. Good estate owners intercept possibly hundreds of possible help tickets each month, essentially they're doing work for LL, while paying LL for the sims. Don't get me started on all of the user content, events, and activities that go on.

At the moment I feel like LL is obligated to give anyone who has an openspace but must sell it, a refund of the setup fees. They know a lot of people are going to fold because of this, and to do this and keep the cash is morally wrong. I guess it's just a little bit okay to do this in a normal situation, but to entice a bunch of people into buying openspace sims (more hardware), then raising the price 9 months later... I think the Fuck You was more than in line. <Insert proper name> Linden has also mentioned it's not about the money. If this is true, at least offer people a refund program.

Linden Lab: Remember, it's the user content, services, and interactions that has made SL as big as it is today. If you want to sell it to businesses as a platform that's fine, but make sure the businesses will have a user base to work with.

Pardon my sense of entitlement, but estate owners, content developers, and the regular user base of SL have worked too hard to make great shit happen in SL, only be charged more in monthly fees because a few douchbags are abusing the system. Punish the douchebags, not everyone. Task or hire someone to investigate sims with regular or poor performance, then notify the owners to clean up, or terminate their service. Don't pass the buck to us.

If anything you should be lowering tier maybe even eliminating setup fees, and here's why:

Class 5's cost less to run, as mentioned in the past when they first came out.
The land store is now automated, less work for Concierge to set them up.
We, the user base, who you are now seemingly alienating in favor of big business have created Second Life with our money, talents, user patches, and even beta testing. You OWE us.

Thank you for removing casinos, banks, and ad farms. I used to be very optimistic about the future of SL, however this is probably turning point in my optimism. Oh, this might be out of line, and off topic, but Fuck You for picking one Development company to work closely with. I want some equal air time, as does many other development companies within SL.

I'd never call it a waste of time. It would be just like any other leisure activity I've outgrown or lost interest in. Fun while it lasted but time to move on. I do feel it will happen fairly soon, SL is changing, and the limited uses I have for it will probably fade soon enough. I won't be venturing to any other Virtual World when that happens, and I am not interested in Open Sim, so it will all just be a pleasant memory for the most part.

In this case I see it more as bashing Lainden Lab (tm), the corporate entity, as opposed to any particular Linden, much like we bash the Government. But it is a good thought. I'm sure most of them are good people, and care about SL, and are trying to do a good job, but I just don't think they have a sound business plan.

In my three years in SL, I have participated actively in the Open Letter project, filed uncountable ARs against griefers, filled out bug reports and JIRAs and attended Linden Office Hours meetings. I even carried a sign during the infamous peaceful birthday protest over unverified accounts in' 06. I felt like if I cared that much about a community I should at least try to make my opinion heard.

But what's been the overall outcome of caring that much?

I told Philip that offering free, unverified accounts would overload the grid and increase ARs a hundredfold - I was right. Their response? Stop answering ARs.

I helped to write the Open Letter, and we met with the Lindens to express our wish that grid stability and reliability be addressed before new features were added. Their response? Flexies and Sculpties.

And, lest I forget to mention it, the Tao of Linden. The biggest joke in the history of business models.

And a year later, the grid was still offering us missing inventory, login shutdowns and horrendous rez times.

At some point, the average user (me) has to ask themselves why they even bother any more. Something I started out loving so much - something I saw having infinite potential for human connection, virtual businesses and the future of the internet was ultimately turned into an overcrowded, under-serviced social game with more risk than reward.

That's where the anger comes from. When people are saying "fuck you", they're telling Linden Lab "We cared. We were passionate. We loved SL. But everything you've done has been a big 'up yours' to your customer base. Well, up yours right back."

I've been feeling betrayed for at least 2 years, now, and every time something like this happens it only intensifies those feelings of betrayal. I must be crazy because I keep coming back for more.
