How do you deal with pirated content you bought in good faith?

that someone is SL is telling builders who have used Marlin Studio textures, which they previously purchased from TRU, that they must repurchase them from the licensed vendor here in SL.

If that happens to you, I suggest you point them to this SLE forum thread

where Tom Marlin and Vryl Valkyrie stated they were not going to go after people who bought and used the textures in good faith, as long as they were not reselling the textures themselves.

Reading the above statement from Mr. Marlin it seems partially contradictory to the 'turn in your textures' statement you made earlier, which means not the end-users of these textures are to be hunted or punished, only those who are actually reselling Marlin textures. And if you locate a reseller Tom Marlin is still the creator, not you so as far as I know Tom Marline needs to file the DMCA's himself.

To be honest the whole issue no longer interests me. Blame it on mah ADD

Anyhoo, I'm sure everyone including you and me, probably got more bent outta shape than necessary about this. But, chalk it up to a life lesson, next time use honey.

I am glad that you contacted Tom Marlin. Yes since that first post, we agreed that requesting an IUUD removal of all the textures is not the good solution since they have been here so long. We are only requesting the normal take down order where the textures are violating the license.. and that is only after contact and no resolution. This is why I later offered to issue legal versions of the textures to people in exchange for their illegal ones or to simply keep what you have but all that we ask in return is to respect the license. This was posted numerous times. I think with all of the mudslinging and flames, those posts were ignored.

I never intended to offend anyone.. apologized numerous times for any misunderstanding. I said from the beginning that I was not out to ostricize but to bring public awareness. I did not once threaten anyone who used the textures, nor did I blaim them. I merely explained that it is our responsibility and it is that we make sure that what we use is legal.. which is true.

Let's just move on and learn from this experience. I know that I have. Bottom line though is theft is still theft and wrong regardless if it happens to an individual or company. Let's work together to protect all original content in Second Life.

Wait.. so the person who MADE and OWNS the rights to the textures said he is not about having the stolen TRU (Textures R Us) versions removed from the databases... Vryl saw that, agreed to it and said she/he would move on and learn from the experience and yet just this past week cornered Islaban and "encouraged" her to buy the textures from Vryl to make it legal and legit?

WTF am I missing here? This is a resolved situation from March by the main person involved and it is being dredged up again by Vryl?

What gives?

Also, Vryl.. what proof do you offer that you are indeed the licensed seller in Second Life for Marlin Studios. I saw it questioned in that SLX thread and asked repeatedly here in that other thread and never answered.

What proof can you offer?

After the previous thread I decided to investigate the licensing issue, so I sent Marlin an email asking if she has permission to do this. This is what I got back:

Vryl Valkyrie is indeed the exclusive reseller of Marlin Studios textures (and derivatives) in Second Life. She normally has a note displaying her rights to resell our textures in SL plus licensing information, but I believe she is in the process of remodeling her store, so it may not currently be displayed. Every Marlin Studios texture you buy from her in SL is fully licensed by Marlin Studios for use within SL . If you buy any Marlin Studios texture elsewhere in SL, those are pirated and in violation of the DMCA.

Thank you for your inquiry. There seems to be a lack of understanding my many in SL as to intellectual property rights and it is good to see someone who is concerned.
