Christian abuse in SL

No really.

Last night I created a priest shape, donned a cassock and joined a group that put the tag "Christian" over my head.

I'm not Christian IRL and have never been.

But what an experience it turned out to be. Within two minutes, I was being harassed by two people who evidently took out whatever problem they had against religion on me, calling me a child molester and trying to offend me by saying any vile thing they could think of and juxtaposing it with the word Jesus.

After about two minutes of that, I muted them and went about my business. They followed me, typing away all along. Ten minutes later I unmuted them out of curiosity and they were still haranguing me, without any reaction from me at all.

I AR'd their asses.

Crimminey. Sure sheds light on what it's like to belong to an unpopular religion in SL.

Curious what kind of experiences actual Christians have had. Is it always like that or did I just hit the jackpot?

"It's not Jesus I have a problem with, it's the members of his fan club that make him look bad." -- Rev. Ivan Stang

I wonder if you'd have had the same experience if you'd put 'Satanist' above your head.

Interesting idea. I'll test that out.

I have 1st Presbyterian Church SL as one of my groups visible when you click on profile, and no one has said anything to me. I can control group titles, I may try this. IRL I am a Presbyterian, so this might get interesting, since I can defend doctrine well, and can switch over to the appropriate behavior from someone wearing that tag.

Vicar in a tutu sounds fun.

(It sounds strange, but some people want to live their second lives this way.)

Not funny Don't really want to be drudging up bad memories like that.

I'll have to dig out my chat cache and post what these two were saying to me last night. It was seriously hostile and bizarre. Never been talked to like that in SL before.

How about "Homosexual."

Or "Transgendered?"

What's the point of this exercise? Which social group gets more abuse in SL?

seriously though I would imagine that the only reason they attacked you was because they could. The animosity here in SL emboldens many to do and say shit they would never consider doing in real life. And since there were two of them, they probably were trying to out do one another. For me a good old “Fuck Off” works well.

You know, I think you're on to something. A lot of religious and non-religious tags were mentioned here, and they could be boiled down to:

"I have a non-neutral point of view"

That's going to invite pugnacious folks to want to go a few rounds with you no matter which point of view you promote.

This is something I had to get used to when I started posting and blogging. I normally like to please everybody, but I realized that no matter what I say, SOMEBODY (often the same person) will have an opposing view and will attack me with all the emotion and hyperbole of a widowed arson victim. That's just the nature of virtual communication.

So wear a tag that says "I'm Christian" "I'm Jewish" "I'm Atheist" "I'm conservative" "I'm liberal" or whatever. Eventually somebody will get around to yelling at you for it.

Or... This week, I was working on some landscape chores on a corporate avatar and some random person started telling me what a loser I was and that I lived in my parent's basement, etc.

Some people just need to get lives.

That depends upon your intentions. If you want/need to hang around in the same area for a little while longer, it can make things a lot worse. Particularly if there are lots of similar morons around who have just been observing until that point. (Read: Welcome area.) I'm still staggered by some of the homophobic shit aimed in my direction while helping newbies out - either because my avatar was wearing eye-liner or I was in the gay4philip group (no tag on display; somebody just happened to notice while profile browsing).

Mute works for me, but to be honest I don't think that kind of thing happens much unless you wear a "I'm in this minority" badge.

You have to realize that the majority of these people are just waiting for a reaction, and once you give them the one they want ("OMG you are such an asshole get a life!") they giggle themselves as they jerk off to nerdporn.

It isn't always the case, some people are just retarded twats, but most of it can be solved by pretending they ain't around.
