How big is Second Life?

I have been poking around but have not found any simple numbers. Where can I look to find the actual land area and population of Second Life?

There's a running sim count in this thread.

There are no valid population stats unless you just want to know the total number of accounts ever created or general concurrency of logins.

I don't see any way to legitimately know because of the prevalence of alts and bots. I think we've broken 70,000 concurrency a couple times now, but that still isn't a count of the actual number of people online at that time. I honestly don't think even LL can give an accurate number. Even if they could narrow it down to the number of people with accounts and discount the bots and alts, there is no way to tell active from inactive members. You have people on the extremes - very active or totally inactive for years, but somewhere in the middle is a line where someone goes from barely active to inactive.

That said, my answer is that the population of Second Life is 2,743, not counting Brazilians, Canadians, the UK and Korea.

Which would put it 180th in the world right after Mauritius @ 2,040 sq km of the 233 countries in the world.

Population is certainly tougher to measure. If you live in Spain you pretty much live there 24/7 but not so in Second Life.

SL is kinda like a whaling station, with no permenant population, just transients cycling in and out.

Yeah due to the transient nature of SL residency, you can't get a population number until you define what you mean by population.

Possibly useful figures:
Number of land/estate owners (including partners)
Number of land/estate owners and their tenants (including partners)
Number of people who either earn or spend L$

I haven't figured out how you can measure the ones that earn nothing, spend nothing, and are not holding land, yet are active residents.

A standard industry method to measure this is average concurrency * 10 or somewhere around say 500,000.

But isn't SL very un-standard? We do have a median age 10 years above the median age of most MMOs.

We actually broke 72k this past Sunday, just after 2PM SL Time.

There is something about 2PM SL Time on Sunday, that attracts people. We've set new records each of the last 3 Sundays, at about the same time each day.

Probably the best number for "population" would be unique log-ins? 500,000+ for the week ending Sept. 19th, according to M Linden's blog post.

I can't go along with that in the case of SL since concurreny has a large bot component.

LL set the bot component at 15% once, I think; I set it as a good 25%. Which is reasonable. Unreasonably, I figure it's 50%.

Who are you calling a transient? (he asks, pulling his bicycle clips off his ankles and puting them in his pocketsies)

Actually, a similar debate at Residents Answers before IT filtered me .. BASTARDS!! ... proferred total pop. as concurrency times 7.

At a shrewd guess, I'd suggest Sunday afternoon SL timezone after lunch and what is mid-evening Europe might catch the max number of weekenders kicking back after the Saturday doing other things and to a lesser extent Sunday.

I'd think any useful number of accounts in SL would be extremely difficult to procure. A snapshot of how many green dots and what percentage are bots I'd imagine being accurate for barely a second. But then, statistics always did confuse me

Added, OK Mr Pedantic here .. heck it *is* Friday .. 15% of a population of 5 are bots? I in 5 is 20%
I know many times Morgaine and I are the only occupants of Yamma Yamma for a lot of time.

OK .. I'll shut up now

On the statistics page of the SL website there is a little footnote at the bottom that goes:

Quote:
2 PMLF (Positive Monthly Linden Flow) looks at the flow of Linden™ dollars into a unique user's account BEFORE Linden Lab Charges are applied to the account. These numbers EXCLUDE payments or receipts related to the sale or acquisition of land (since theoretically these represent investments and not business receipts). All numbers are rolled-up among avatar "alts" to the Unique Customer Level. Businesses that are operate Linden dollar exchanges are excluded. Note that some businesses accept payment outside the Linden Economy (e.g. via CC & Paypal) and those numbers are not included in these reports.
That little footnote has always made me feel as if LL has a much better idea of the number of actual human beings engaged in their platform then they'd ever want to make public.

"Unique Customers" ... would be a very interesting number to know, don't you think?

Every time someone starts on this issue, no one can determine how many bots are on at a given time, its always going to be a guess. And what is a bot? I don't have a store, but if I did, I would probably park a second avatar in the store modeling clothes. I also would use the bot to watch the shop, and can uncloak into customer service while my main av is elsewhere. Plus people get to see the clothes, and if someone IM's me I can use the bot as a model for a particular outfit. Based on traffic, there are people using bots to game the traffic system. But most of the places I visit seem to have the stated number of people on the sim the traffic count shows. SL has definitely been growing. I see many places that are busier than they were 6 months ago. The count falls rapidly when the grid is closed, and I would imagine the client for a traffic bot tends not to crash as often as an active avatar since they don't go anywhere or do anything. My guess is that counting all the kinds of bots it is no more than 20%, and there are probably 20 or 30 serious abusers.

Roughly a 45km square. Probably smaller than the smallest state.
