It really was pretty boring. I just slapped some stuff on a wall. This year's booth looks better, but it's still not great.

You know what, Miriel? When organizing a large event, you're always damned if you do and damned if you don't. All you can do in the end is go with your gut feelings on this. I think Siyu's suggestion for allowing her to just place her own booth is a good one. You didn't actually specifically state that the booths would be no mod and this might be a way to just gracefully end what could end up being unnecessary drama. Ultimately, though, the final decision is yours.

You're doing the best you can and organizing a very popular event. Give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it.

Miriel, you're doing a fantastic job!

I hadn't considered that the booths might be modifiable, but then I'm Ms. Last Minute and so I hadn't really started to work on mine yet. /me looks at calendar... I'd better get moving!

Obviously I can't speak for all the other vendors, but if you need an easy life, and he/she continues bitching, I wouldn't have a problem if you allowed mod permissions on the big stands. Although I can see that once you start allowing teeny mods.. it may (will?) get out of hand. (Thinking of the jungle stands at the hair fair complete with menagerie)

I didn't really think about it, but I guess sending the booth would make people think they could mod it. So if you are unsure you ask and if the answer is no then you move on. Last year I fretted hardcore about my booth and worried about setting up (as the day or so before I was leaving for San Francisco) and thank goodness you let me set up a bit early. You have no idea how I appreciated that, Miriel. So inflexible is not a word I'd associate with you, ever. I don't think that the world is going to end if someone can't do glass walls.

So, no, you weren't out of line. Although you are a better woman than me. Snide comments with a winky emoticon afterwards throw me into 'you know what? FUCK OFF" mode.

I agree with everyone else... bottom line is really as an organizer its your call and you said no...end of story. On top of that, you were NICE about it... no need for her to be a smart ass to you just because she didn't like your answer.

miriel, you're the one with experience running the jewelry expo. you will see "big picture" things that individual vendors will not. i'm glad you trusted your judgement.

yes, you made a mistake in not specifying the mod rules up front. but then you not just clarified it, but made it abundantly clear with the what and why. that should have been it.

well done at sticking to your guns and not stooping to her level.

I actually have thought about letting people mod the walls next year, since this conversation. I'll bring it up at a meeting, but it'd have to only be for the freestanding booths. Letting people mod things with shared walls and floors is an invitation for trouble. All you need is one person accidentally selecting the entire wall instead of just one face, and suddenly their neighbor's booth is messed up. :/

Another solution could be to sell the actual booths to the vendors for 0L$ (or an extra fee for mod rights) once set up starts. That way, the booths would keep their exact dimensions/placement. You could then specify "you can mod this and this ONLY! Booths must remain in their position...you can make the walls taller...shorter...but not thicker...don't change the outside texture...bla bla bla.. If in doubt, ask me, or better yet, don't do it. kthx"

If you feel adventurous and decide to let smaller vendors texture their own walls too, you could also sell them the booths --walls only-- (provided of course that you made the middle walls out of two distinct parts so everyone gets their own side to texture...to avoid booboos!)

However, allowing small booths around the expo to texture their own walls might open another can of worms, such as someone thinking their neighbor is on acid and that their texture choice is an affront to good taste and human dignity. One's idea of chic can sometimes be another person's worst nightmare

Being told no is never fun. Having to say no is even more difficult. Hang in there!

PS: It's too late to allow changes now anyway... everyone will know who it is if you let her put up her glass walls and it will end up in an epic Miriel fans vs Undisclosed fans battle. Eep!!

Thank you! I may bump the maximum number of allowed avatars up to 55. I'm keeping it at 50 now 'cause I'm uncomfortable with some of the lag spikes we got even at 40.

Thumbs up

I'm in and it's wonderfully easy to navigate around. I'm hardly lagging which is great considering my partner is moving around 70gb of files from my pc to his at the moment (timing hmmph lol )
I really like the diversity of the stalls there, and the designs. It's very inspiring to see what can be made!

It's the first Jewellery Expo I've ever visited so wasn't sure what to expect, and I must say I'm very impressed. Lots of lovely freebies and the auction for charity is a lovely touch. I'm very glad I visited. I feel a Sunday spending spree coming on

It's an excellent build, and the low lag is such a bonus. Already bought a lovely pocketwatch, and Ghu knows what I may end up buying next.

And Freyja...

Lets not speak of Freyja.

Just finished a tour of the entire Fair, and I have to say this is the very first time I've seen ALL of an expo. I usually get frustrated by the lag and leave before I've seen half of the booths.

Once I was in, there were only a few moments of lag (usually when I walked toward someone with tortured hair and heavy prim attachments). For the most part, I was able to move around freely and really enjoy myself.

Great job, Miriel!

Siyu's new stuff is just fantastic. I stood staring at her booth for ages, unable to decide which one to get (to start with...). I finally managed to make up my mind (no small feat, as Ran will tell anyone), and now the Madiyah set is all mine. I just had to have at least one of the sets, even though I have to make a special shape for it (my nose had to come down from 50 to 20 ;P).

I think it's your own fault. You sent them out full perms. Anyone would get the impression that they could modify it.

LOL, I think we're an endangered species in SL.

But yes, from now on, I will have to be doing 'veil and mask' shapes as well as 'skirt shapes'.

Actually, after trying it out, these veils work fine with my regular shape. Which is absolutely phenomenal. I never thought I'd see a veil in SL fit around my nose.

Siyu. She gave them a nose dip.

I managed to get half way around the expo before RL called. I was quite impressed by the overall lack of lag given that much stuff set up around the Isle. It was quite easy to move about with only minimal drag and rubber-banding.

So far, I give it a very good score on laglessness. Good job Miriel!

I plan on seeing the rest of it sometime during the week. Can't wait.

I love the Jewelry Expo - I'll be going back in later this week for some spending but for now I was happy to go around and gawk at all the sparkly sparklies.

Plus I got to meet a very distracted and busy and nice Miriel. (She didn;t laugh at my typos which makes her good people in my book lol)

xx
