Question How are they hiding these traffic bots?

I like finding bot farms just because I find them eerie in a funhouse/dark ride kind of way. Anyway, I'm pretty stumped as to how to view the bots in this particular sim. There's a furniture store with one actual customer on site and 120,486 traffic. The sim stats show 88 avatars in-sim right now, and 86 of them are obviously traffic bots, as there are only 3 dots on the minimap.

They are in the Quark sim at around 203, 138, and below ground level. (You can tell by watching the green arrow turn to a green dot on the minimap when you cam straight down.)

This is a really weird case though, for a few reasons:
  • I can cam exactly where they are but I don't see anything.
  • I haven't detected any invisiprims, but those can be tough to find. Wireframe mode was no help, and switching off the rendering options didn't work either.
  • My MystiTool still works even though scripts are off (when the random actual customer ports in they show up on my scanner), but the traffic bot avatars don't, even though they're DEFINITELY within scan range.

Do bot clients have a way to hide from scanners now? Can they hide the avatar and the avatar's name/group as well? Are any of you able to find these guys? I just want some screenies for my Snapzilla.

The green dots are not very reliable. They show people lower than you when in actuality they are very far above you. Check around 4000-10000 meters or something.

Very avant-garde! A powerful artistic statement about identity and conformity in the modern world.

On a somewhat related note, LL announced they were going to be reviewing people with RegAPI accounts to eliminate people who might not really need them. I wonder if that's bot related.

Really I should FRAPS it sometime. It's even freakier with them all blinking and looking around and crap with their faces all fused together like that.

Haha, sure. It's not all traffic bots but there are definitely several covered there. All pictures are captioned with explanation of what you're seeing. Someone just pointed me to a crazy farm in the Blue City sim, which I've just snapshotted for my 'zilla.

My Snapzilla.

It lets you create Second Life accounts using a custom sign-in method that doesn't necessarily require the same amount of identifying information as the secondlife.com signup process. It was intended for portals, like CSI or other businesses who want to provide customers a custom SL experience.

Gigs is positing that maybe some people with access to the RegAPI interface might be doing it just to create tons of bots.

I love your bot posts!
It's probably a sign that I invest too much humanity into an avatar (or something like that,) but it really is surreal.

You posted about a bot farm one time that I just *had* to see for myself. It was like a golem army standing there, blinking and breathing, waiting for a magic word to animate them. All of a sudden a single avatar disengaged from the pack, marched over, and demanded to know who I was and what I was doing there. Creeped me right the fuck out.

Damn, I wanted to see this for myself, so I went to the Quark sim and found them, but they were all white "Ruth II" clouds. While I was waiting to see if they'd rezz before taking pics, and getting into position, I fell off the now-invisible platform ... and suddenly it was a no-fly zone. I'd already flown up to 4000m, so maybe someone had changed the parcel options while I was there - I'd noticed that a neighbouring parcel was no-fly on arrival.

One thing that struck me was that the avatars' names had clearly been hand-picked with a little thought, and some of them were pretty good ones (obviously, I'm not going to post examples). I'd expected to see codes for names or "sdjkhjsh" or something.

Many thanks to Wildefire for the heads-up and the Snapzilla pics. Cool and spooky stuff!

This is a fascinating topic. I found some (easily, by picking a store with a really high traffic count) and I went hunting. I took this pic at Alessandra skin store, in a skybox at 630m high. The interior of the box is done out like some sort of Geiger-esque alien facility for abducted victims. They all have names starting "Alessandramodelxxx" where xxx is a number. There are 32 bots in the sky, another 32 modelling skins in the store, and 17 campers on the beach. 81 total.

How does that convert to traffic? Anyone know the formula?

1 point per minute per avatar during the most recent 24-hour polling period. The theoretical max traffic would seem to be 144,000, which is only possible on estate sims where you can bump up the max number of avatars in a sim to 100, but technically I think you could achieve a higher number if you really tried due to the fact that SL will let avatars whose last login point was a sim log into the same region, even if it's full. (I once saw a case where 105 avatars were in a sim at once.)

Also, @Barrington- I have to use the Nicholaz client or my computer will melt. That's the only reason I can see all these bots. Newer clients will do what you were saying.

Oh- another thing- if you have the debug tools enabled and 'View Admin Options' turned on you can override no-fly in any sim.
