If any of you do end up ordering one of the custom skins, please take pics of it for the flickr group! I would love to see everyone's creations on someone other than myself. haha

Flickr: Please wait...

i will be spending the weekend banging through all the orders, so hopefully everyone should get theirs soon

I only have one Suggestion. Somewhere, can you put images of what the skin tones look like on an avatar? That would really help me know what tone I want when shopping at work and not able to go to your store and check

I don't know how automated your process is, but with some advanced Photoshop scripting wizardry, its should be possible to automate the whole texturemaking process. I'm betting that your PSD file is organized neatly, so that the options are just a matter of switching layers on and off. If your website outputs a simple text file for each order, a script should be able to read the output and automatically turn on the proper layers and save out a named TGA file. You could prolly cut the whole process down to a few minutes per order.

Here's a PS scripting forum where you could get more info, if your not already doing it like this

I was thinking about the possiblilities for this kind of thing yesterday and that new Prim Composer for 3DS Max came to mind. That program lets you build and texture with prims in 3DS Max and then it imports it into SL by logging in a bot which automatically builds the prims and uploads and applies the textures and puts them all together for you so that your build is waiting for you when you log in normally. I wonder if it would be possible to create a bot that could put skins together like that. Like, if it could take all the textures in a folder and upload them and assemble them automatically. That's my dream!

i personally think you're doing it the right way giving the demo first. You'll probably lose out on a few bad orders, but I think your adoption rate will be much higher than if people had to pre-pay.

i looked at the demos of the off-the-shelf skins in the store, and i didn't see a correlation to the tones on the web site. for example, the site has vanilla, cream, sand, etc. but in the store there is either the person-named skins, or cream, glow and latte. having a special section of demos which relate to the skin designer site would be helpful.

a word of advice, for what it's worth. be careful not to allow *too* much customization. more choices are good, but at a certain point it can just be overwhelming, and might hurt sales by people not being able to decide between things that are very similar.

good luck, i hope this is successful

I guess it hasnt been clear enough, but i have specific demos available near the kiosk that apply to the skintones on the site. The premade skins follow a different skintone scheme. How can I make it more clear to customers? I have a sign that says "Click here for demos" on the Skin Designer sign.

I found them without any issue. The only thing I would suggest is shifting the demo sign down a bit...I had to cam up to see it.

Alas, still no skintone light enough for pale lil' me though. I like something in the Gala Opaline/Celestial Studios Vogue Pure range.

I am more than pleased with the result of my first Soda customized skin tester. I like it very much indeed! For those of you wondering about the privates, the pubic area is shaven and very acceptable too. This was well worth the $100L risk to try it out and I can see myself getting a few different skins

charlotte, i hope you don't mind me being super picky. two (very small!) suggestions for the in-world store:

* i did find the demos easily on the second visit, knowing they were there (the first time i was a dolt...er, let's blame it on something not rezzing). but i wonder if a graphic showing the range of skin tones would communicate "skin demos" a little better? it does say demo & info (and they're all cute graphics), but i think visually it would really be clear if it suggested of a range of skins

* there are two kiosks that i *think* do the same thing, but they look a little different. if they have the same functionality i'd make them look exactly the same so there's no confusion.

off to play with skin options...

Hi! I placed my order this weekend, but I too did not see the demo sign for the skins, or rather I did not notice it was there. I placed the order just guessing the skin color. Just now I went and picked up the skins demo, after having read this thread and found that the one I liked the best was the one I have already ordered, so thats cool! I like Parkers idea of a graphic with the skin tones on it, perhaps separated from the main sign. Looking forward to seeing the results!

thanks for the suggestions, guys! i will make some better graphics for the demos

And yes, i am sorry for the kiosk confusion. I had to throw up a second one in a hurry cause the script kept giving errors due to too many items being shoved in there. So the two-kiosk thing is a temporary fix. When I get a spare moment, I am going to make several kiosks organized alphabetically by first name so it will be super easy to find yours.

It's been an interesting first weekend, i am definitely learning which things need improvement but i am glad that, so far, people have been very understanding and reasonably satisfied with the product, so thanks everyone!

Great Idea..and agree with the idea of having the skin tone on the pic rather than as a swatch.

Does anyone other than me remember the ... I think it was Aurora ... skin line that let you choose skin tone, makeup, and pube style all on one inworld vendor? I ran across them in the bad old times in 2006 of "dirty butt" photoreal skins, so I don't wear the skin anymore, but I always thought it was great business.

Charlotte, you've taken it a step further with your great easy-to-use website. I REALLY look forward to more makeups there. I'll be sending an alt by your store to play with demos, and will pass your name on to a skin addict I know.

Good luck with the business!

p.s. Skin City recently had a hunt which featured SODA cans/caps. Is that you, also? I would check inworld but I'm too lazy

I'm pretty sure those are "Sones" soda caps, which are a play on "Jones Soda"
