Perhaps because I asked for it: Thoughts from a lurker

I would have found the information on the first part of the topic useful when I was new and I said so. Maybe Cristiano had another reason though and I perhaps presume too much.

I thought the beginning of this thread was acually a pretty bad way to introduce someone to SLU given what happened with the person who, feeling very put out, ended up leaving out of frustration (which I'm not saying anything about good or bad, I'm just saying, it happened).

But maybe my recollection is off.

Personally, I think this thread has a lot of arguing and flaming in it for a sticky.

There was a lot of good information given despite that.

I don't recall many threads so far where that is not the case

OK you all don't find it useful, well consider perhaps it is not for you? Maybe a new person will find some good info in the first handful of pages?

Keep in mind at the time this started there was another thread going on about how SOME people over on the SL Forums see SLU as very cliquey, "mean-spirited' and the like. When I was watching this thread off and on, it seemed like we were doing a pretty good job of making that seem true EVEN IF it was not in any way justified.

I didn't know the person who left, but I remember also Ingrid getting into it with people, too, trying to defend her...made me sad and felt sorta yukky. Left me feeling kinda like it wasn't our best face.

What would be super cool however is if we culled the wheat from the chaff and someone(s) took the time to make a little user guide from the content here...a cut and paste jobber probably...if I wasn't about to give birth I'd even be willing to do that because it tickles my instructional design background...

...but alas, not to be.

I agree with almost everything you say including the making a handy guide but you know I also think that showing the way things are warts and all is a good thing too. No point showing only the good when there is a mix and hey if people find that is not for them then at least they got the facts about it.

Those who say it is cliquey and mean spirited here are missing how saying how cliquey and mean-spirited it can be over there too. Whenever you get groups of people with different viewpoints together they will form cliques and there will be some good-naturedness and some mean-spiritness. It is natural and part of human behaviour.
There is a lot of good here in SLU just as there is on the LL forums and it has a different flavour to the LL forums, some of it good-different and some bad-different but on the whole it gives some variety and there are some pretty big wins like not risking an in world ban for your words here. These are the things I see are valuable here that the naysayers are missing.
No community is perfect. The thread just shows that there are real people here and not mindless automatons and we should be OK with that.

Cristiano obviously thought there was merit in the thread too, maybe he should comment why he stickied it - it might have nothing to do with my request.

I still think a little (as in short) guide would be great just because the thread also got so long and crazy...I mean, who is gonna read it all?

Hence, wheat, chaff comment. It's not only because it's got that underlying drama on it, it's also because the underlying drama doesn't do much to help someone feel welcome.

I mean, yeah, agreed we're all human and cliquey anyhow, I'm just a proponent of best and most efficient face forward. Probably--that's not what a forum is for...lulz.

Yeah, agreed. And I gotta run. Best.

And thanks

mmm .. sandwiched between Siobhan, Ingrid and Lexxi ... ni-ice

Dunno about being a guide to new posters, I think by our nature we tend to learn more by our mistakes than through an instruction manual .. or ought to.
Admittedly, some very good advice here .. just saying some need to put their toe into hot water to prove it sometimes.

I agree with you mostly, but I also think it should remain a sticky.

I think this thread is pretty much our forum in a nutshell. We've got thoughtful discourse, catfighting, makeup sex, porn, aired grievances, and various and sundry inside jokes, all neatly wrapped up in one 22 page package.

Look upon our works, ye noobie, and despair!
