I probably should not even do this... but I just can't help myself.

First I am a bloodlines member... a casual sort of participant in the game. There have been times when I wildly tried to bite anyone and anything that seemed to be 'fresh'... lately I've slowed down a bit... but last night I was out looking for some fresh blood... I had recently bitten a couple newbies... and even one maybe two not so newbies... but anyway, typically I try to help the newbies I bite, even help some that don't want to be bitten. In my effort to help I found myself at Sarah Nerd's newbie store... I TPed in a couple newbies whom I had been chatting with at a different location... I had been to Sarah's store many times before, for my own 'clothing' needs... I'd never seen any signs about biting before, and didn't even think to look for one. well I noticed a couple 'fresh vicitims' standing around the TP area, so I talked too them a bit and asked about biting... I think I even got a couple bites... well then I turned around and saw Octavia Pow, and asked her if I could bite her...

Right after I hit return... I saw the sign requesting that no solicitation for biting of newbies... about the same moment, Octavia Pow (Sarah, really I later come to understand) told me about the sign...

Well to make a long story shorter... I chated with Sarah for quite a while about the issue of bloodlines members biting newbies... I'm not sure we solved any of the worlds problems in this conversation... but she pointed me to this fourm.. in the midst of the conversation.... So, that's why i'm here... it's all Sarah's fault...

Ok, so you don't like bloodlines? or people biting newbies... well I can live with that. You own land and don't want bloodlines members to bite... well that's cool too. it's all cool.

In the end... wow... this is SL isn't it? isn't like this all just a fantasy? well maybe I just don't get it... after all I've only been in SL for maybe 3 months or so. And only beeing marginally interested in vampires or anything related to them for maybe 2 months... but really... .

In case you think I'm like a total newbie to everything even remotely related to the net... I'm not... in fact I've been on the net for about 20 years... Much of my experiance with public debates about net citizenship is within the relm of usenet newsgroups.... But wow... talk abot out of hand... now those things turned into pretty much a free for all... with little or nothing intelegent being said there in the last 15 years...

I must say Sarah is every bit as pleasant to talk to in SL as her store is pleasant to shop at for freebies... I often bring my 'victims' to her place first... it's a nice place, what can I say.

So... bloodlines... Bloodlines is apparently getting complaints about members 'spamming' or whatever you want to call it. They've made a couple changes and are considering more. The first change they made was to stop given out 'awards' to frequent biters... They also have started to request or suggest that players should 'role play' more... rather then just have their 'fangs' send out a request to animate any avatar they see..

Well that last change is probably why Sarah has seen a increase in IM's requesting to bite her bot... Previously her bot had probably been getting 'pop up' animation requests, which she apparently can not see....

Anyway... Sarah did not ban me from her store (at least I don't think she has, and I don't think she will since I don't intend to bite at her store again). I think we had a very nice conversation and I was actually VERY thrilled to meet her, since I think my first non Linden issue clothing in SL came from her store...

I myself have somewhat mixed feelings about the Bloodlines game... yes, at some level it is a pyramid structure... but it's not quite like a 'chain mail' sort of thing... I do think the owners/creators of the Bloodlines thing are largely just out to make money... but they do seem to have a somewhat interesting product. After all if it were not so popular I don't think we would all even be having this discussion. But as has already been posted... if you don't want to be in the game, you don't have to be... If you don't want your name listed on their website as being bitten by a vampire, then you can even get that removed...

I do have to laugh a bit at those who think their vampire role play is like superior to those who choose to play the Bloodlines thing... yeah.. Ok well my dad can beat up your dad too.

So... well in short... I say... live and let live... or something like that.

I'm thinking about creating a kissing game... where the object to the game would be to kiss as many people as you can... maybe that would make Sl a more wonderful place... and who knows... maybe even make me a linden or two...

So, I apologize to Sarah for not reading her signs every time I TP into her place... I thank her for having such a wonderful store... I give her credit for being such a nice person to a bloodlines player who tried to bite her bot and being willing to have a pretty nice conversation about it.... funny thing is... I actually think last night was the first time I ever actually bit anyone in her store.

I would suggest to all that it's a bit odd to get too bent out of shape about all of this... I do also intend to make some suggestions to bloodlines about ways they may further reduce the level of competition amongst their players to get that 'first bite' on a victim... I think it's largely the need to be the first bite that is causing non-players to be asked so frequently to be bitten... Surely there must be a way to modify their game so that the 'first bite' is not the most important... changing that single aspect of the game would most likely fix most of what others see as a problem with Bloodlines...

After talking to you for a few minutes I felt pretty bad for being so rude at the start of the conversation. You were a great guy to talk to, and you really made me rethink my thoughts on the whole subject. So much so that I might pull my sign down. Reminded me that I played tiny empires for a few months, and it really wasn't all that different so I really didn't have a lot of room to bitch. And I really hope you end up staying here at SLU. I think you would fit in well with this group because your very smart and considerate.

I tp'd in to Sarah's (great place Sarah. You're a wonderful person to do that for noobs! ) to look around, and had one of those bite popups before my feet even hit the floor, let alone the floor being rezzed.

I don't remember the guy's name, but I think it started with V.

It annoyed me, but I figured Ok, some vampire wants to play. I can play. "V , buddy, you have a deathwish or something?"

Nothing.... the guy was just blind-biting everyone who tp'd in I guess.

Then I saw Octavia coming over to talk to the guy, so I went about my business. I didn't know Octavia = Sarah though.

Well Sarah, I don't really recall the beginning of our conversation as being too rude on your part... and well i was like standing right next to the sign when I asked to bite your bot... so I surely deserved little or no respect. I am very glad to hear that our conversation was pleasant and/or helpful on both sides of the computer screens...

I just got back from lunch and had a little more time to think about all this... and while I really don't care too much one way or another if people do allow biting on their land, etc.. I got to thinking... who in SL really has the right to decide what another avatar can or can not ask another avatar to do... I mean as long as it's not something illegal.

I also got to thinking that there probably are more then a few newbies who would really love to learn about a game like the Bloodlines : Thirst game... So one person's unwanted solicitation is also likely to be someone else's helpfull chat.

In the end, I do think it's well with in the rights of any land owner to request that the people/avatars who use their space, conduct themselves in ways that that land owner sees as best for their own personal interests.

Thanks again Sarah for being openminded about the whole thing... and also for providing such a wonderull service to the newbie (that being your freebie store, etc..)

And generally speaking, Cy, when it comes to any kind of role play in SL the rule is do what you like but don't pull me into your scene. Your role play ends at my pixel face/space.

It's not even role play, RP means people involved in playing roles and exchanging dialog with each other. This is just running up to strangers asking to "bite" them. And why? So you can level up in your game.

And I should help you with that, why, again?

Jerboa, my name in SL is 'Sigh Borkotron' ( Cy Borg, was not a option) and I don't think I was the one that tried to bite you... But you see it's the nature of how the bloodlines 'game' currently works... (and what I earlier said is I belive what is causing most of the excsessive biting and/or quick biting without care for if the person is interested in vampires or not) The first bite is the only one that gets a bloodlines player 'blood'... unless the person has purchased a HUD and/or joined the game. It's also the one that marks that person's 'soul' to go to the BL player who was the first to bite that avatar... The more bloodlines players there are, the more fierce the competion is to get that first bite on a avatar. I've been in locations where I try to have a conversation with a person that I hope may lead to me getting to bite them... and while I'm talking to the person, hoping I can get that first bite... another bloodlines player comes along and bites the person I've been trying to sweetalk into letting me bite them... So, the pressure (of the game due to it's current rules) is there to try and get that bite as quickly as possible....

The maintainers of the bloodlines:thrist, could make a change... say that it would be the last person to bite the avatar before they joined bloodlines who would get that persons 'soul'... and that change alone would probably all but eliminate the players pressure to go around biting without much thought to who they tried to bite, etc... They could also make it so that a vampire didn't have to feed quite so often.... or make it so that repeat bites on 'willing' humans would give the bloodlines player more blood... ( I intend to make these suggestions to the people who maintain the bloodlines software ).

You know what, I meant it. And if you didn't mind people thinking of you as an annoying pest in SL maybe you would pay attention to it.

The whole "game" is to pester other people in SL, frankly. Who have no interest in you or your little game. It's rude and stupid and annoying.

Before this, the only people who did this sort of thing were griefers, lol. Everyone else had to AGREE to role play, not be spammed with crap while they were shopping.

Yes, you as individuals have every right to think my behaivor is annoying and/or stupid, just as I do yours... but to move to have Bloodlines players banned... or bared from even asking to have another avatar to allow to be bitten.. is what I think is not right (as a whole, not that a individual land owner, etc... can't choose what they want to have happen on their own land)...

By all means, if someone asks you to let them bite you, and you think it's annoying or stupid... then tell them so if you feel you must... or you could just say 'no thank you' and walk away. it's your choice. If that particular person keeps asking over and over then that's griefing... a simple one time request I don't see should be considered as grief.
