Bush Administration Moving to Block Second Life and Other Online "Games of Skill"

Best to go to the site and read it for yourselves...it's a rehash of the 2006 internet legislation that 'failed'. Not sure how credible the threat is tho...could always move LL offshore or something I guess.

Quote:

...Ground-breaking sites like Second Life will likely fall victim to this expanded reach. Second Life has a successful in-world economy that involves, in part, trading and developing real estate with other community members. The Second Life economic system has hundreds of thousands of users trading 5.3 billion "Linden dollars" which are freely convertible to U.S. dollars. ...
Here's where it landed so far, and I imagine they have other things on their mind atm:

H.R. 6870: To ensure that implementation of proposed regulations under subchapter IV of chapter 53... (GovTrack.us)

Last Action:Sep 11, 2008: Referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.

Edit: Waiiit...I found more on this on the SLX thread, again not sure what this all means but thought I'd throw it out there:

Quote:
It passed the committee!!! Now on to congress.

Congressman Peter King (R-NY) and William Lacy Clay (D-MO) rounded out the discussion on Frank’s internet gambling legislation. The amendment was passed by an oral vote. Frank then offered up a vote on HR 6870, which also passed orally, but Bachus asked for a recorded roll call vote to take place. Because of the absence of many Committee members, the Financial Services Committee was forced to coordinate a time to reconvene for a vote. At 5:00pm ET, the bill was officially passed by a 30-19 vote.

HR 6870 may now move on to discussion on the House floor, although the target date for adjournment of the Congress is September 26th, which is next Friday. The recess allows for members to campaign for the upcoming general elections in the United States on November 4th. Normally, a “lame duck” session occurs after elections in Congress, although this may not take place in 2008.

I love the hysteria that title has been evoking on some sites, perfect in an election year. Mr Frank's bill passed, that's good. I know he's been on top of the issue for a while. It's a good piece of legislation. Now to see what the House will do with it. Just keep rolling the dice, folks. Yo, Eleven.

I would have tagged it on there had I seen it, but either way the news I suppose is that there was committee movement on it today/yesterday.

Or something like that...

If I may go on a little rant here, how is it that the "Bush Administration" wants to do this, when this is a bill coming out of the Senate that was authored by a democrat? Misleading subjects annoy me.

Here is the other thread: LL to stop the L$ soon? lol

That title was attached to that brilliant piece of hyperbolic ranting from NetFreedom Forever linked in that thread you jusr referenced. It was meant to drum up support FOR the bill, which will prevent the evil overlords from closing down our cartoon utopia.
