I do wish Blog Bot would report to the General Second life section. I didn't even know he had made a post yesterday when I made my thread here about SLim.

Sneaky bot bastige!

Seems like typical Linden business to me. Creating a ridiculous system that throws the baby out with the bathwater, instead of just smacking down blatantly obvious offenders.

Want to bet it'll be enforced strictly at first for appearances' sake before they go back to the haphazard enforcement they use for everything else?

In this case, what would you define as the "baby" that we're losing?

The blog specifically states that it is only NETWORK advertising that will be regulated, under guidelines that establish the number, location and visibility of the ads. Store signs and local commercial advertising are not under this licensing system.

I think I'm just not 100% clear on it.

So if you have billboards placed around the grid, on either consenting or paid-for land owned by other, its okay? And if it is okay, can the slimeballs use this loophole by owning the land with one alt and the ads with another?

By Network advertising we are specifically referring to the practice of using many parcels over multiple regions, especially small micro parcels where the predominant purpose of the land is to hold advertising. In the vast majority of cases we believe it will be very clear whether a particular use is a violation or not but we will provide a way for people to appeal and discuss their own case with us before any action is taken. We will assess any edge cases as we encounter them.
Sounds good to me. I just have my fingers crossed that LL follows through.

One possible loophole would be that you could send bots around to manually change the ads. As it stands, network advertisers work by using scripts which ping the adtowers to change the ads automatically. You rarely if ever see their avis inworld.

However, the rules could be written to regulate the result rather than the process.

One problem is that a lot of the most reviled small plot extortionists don't put up ads at all. Others put up ads which are not really ads... the huge ugly monstrosities are put up merely to annoy the abutters and not seriously intended to market any service or product in particular.
