My whole thing is this- when you're creating anything, you're putting it out there for public scrutiny. Not everything is going to suit every person's taste. And yes, you run the risk of someone rolling their eyes and laughing at it.

I mean, if I kept this thread title but made it about these shoes that lack heels, I doubt that many of you would be saying "OMG Antonio Berardi worked so hard on those shoes and you're so meeeeeeeeean!!!11!"

I understand that some of you know the person who made the outfit in world, and I'm sorry if I offended your friend. I don't know the creator, and I honestly don't know the name of the store where I saw this outfit. I have no animosity towards him or her. I just happen to find this outfit a bit ridiculous, especially compared to the rest of the line, which doesn't look like this at all. If that makes me a horrible person, so be it.

It should be noted that, no, I can't do better. I attempted to make my own clothes. They were terrible. But just because I am not a content creator doesn't mean I can't have an opinion.

i don't know the person who made the outfit. No one is saying you are horrible.

For a moment, put yourself in that persons shoes. I don't think we have the right to publicly bash peoples creativity. Behind closed doors, do what you want. We are not critics.

For a lot of people, who do not have any experience with graphics, it is sense of accomplishment and pride, regardless if its top notch or bottom barrel. They should be congratulated instead of mocked.

Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "melts in your mouth, not in your hands"

I'm just a noob builder, but I'm trying really hard and investing an awful lot into the stuff I build. I know it looks bad compared to what some others are doing. I appreciate honest evaluations of it, even when they aren't good, but I would really prefer it be private.

It's just a little mean to post it in here, imo. The creator probably put a lot of work into it.

Personally, every bit of negative criticism I've ever received served to fuel my drive to do better work and "show them all" in the future.

Xio your original post was more along the lines of the first instance, although it might be viewed as mocking or ridicule depending on the reader. I certainly didnt read it that way but some of the subsequent posts were definitely less ummm friendly for want of a better word.

I have no idea who the creator is, and I have no idea if they poured their heart and soul into its design or not. As far as I am concerned thats not relevant. I just think the laughing and rolling of eyes in a public forum makes SLU look unfriendly, superior (in the worst way) and cliquey and thats not really who we are....

ETA: There is nothing wrong with having an opinion. However I dont see why opinions have to be voiced in a public forum - surely they are just as valid if shared privately? Tact is greatly under-utilised on the net and I have NEVER understood why...

I completely agree. I welcome criticism. It will make me better. But I think there's a difference between someone telling me that they hate something I made for whatever reason, and someone coming here and publically posting that I suck and I'm a hack and then ridiculing me publically. The former might sting a bit, but I'll take it to heart and try to do better. The latter is just hurtful and likely to make me quit building altogether.

I just rented a bit of shop space and I've put some things out for sale, so I fully expect the criticism and ridicule to start pouring in. I just hope I don't get called out and humiliated in front of my friends.

I admit that I came across a bit harsh, and that was certainly not my intent. However, I can't help but wonder how much of this is due to the fact that someone knows the creator of the outfit in world. After all, when I posted the Bad Idea Shoes, aside from a few comments noting that they wouldn't be so bad without the extras, it was "everybody in the pool!".

Is this the part where I mention that I actually kind of dig clicky clacky shoes, provided the clicks aren't thundering? With the right kind of shoe, the clicks can actually be sexy...

It's offers like this that make me love SL.

Unfortunately, pictures of breasts look weird on spherical knobs, and I suspect they would distract anyone using the sextant for navigation (for which it's worthless anyway - navigation by the stars being somewhat ineffective in SL)

On the microscope I'm selling, I goofed with the textures so when you look in the lens, you see a little paramecium. I briefly toyed with the idea of a tiny naked woman, but thought better of it. FWIW, the paramecium is nude.

Actually, now that I think of it, it would be cool to have that texture change ever 10 seconds or so, so you could watch a little slide show. God Damn It! I wish I'd thought of that earlier. Now I'm angry with myself. And I'm a hack. There, I publically humiliated myself so none of you had to do it. That would have kicked way more ass than a static picture.

Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Oh, what were we discussing the other day in group chat, then, while I was commenting on the humorous sex chat going on near me? Thought you were talking about a sextant. Knobs on a microscope, eh?

Nobody who has commented in this thread has said they know the creator - in fact a couple of us have explicitly said we dont. What those with an issuse are saying, and I thought pretty clearly, is that we can empathise with the creator, and can imagine how we would feel if something of ours was the subject of a thread like this.

OK if you're talking about those RL shoes that you linked to earlier, then the context is quite different. A famous RL designer is not going to hear about a thread on some SL related forum, or care. After all we are not part of their community. Not so an SL designer. They are very likely to hear about it, read it and be hurt - by members of the community they belong to!

This kind of commentary reflects badly on SLU-the-Community and I really thought we had a better understanding of the whole "there's a real person behind that avatar" thing.

You're right. We were discussing the knobs on a sextant. Poor wording on my part. I was having a bear of a time getting the textures on the knobs that adjust the lenses on the sextant to look the way I wanted. You joked that I ought to use photos of your breasts as the texture. Comedy gold ensued in group chat.

I digressed in my post above. In addition to the sextant, I made a microscope, and I set it up so if you looked into the lens, you saw a little paramecium, like you were looking in an actual microscope. Because of our discussion about the sextant, I thought of several other pictures that would have been wildly inappropriate and, therefore, pretty funny, but I stuck with the paramecium.

Then it occurred to me I could have had several textures and just had it constantly cycling through them, which would have been about 10,000x better, and I got massively irritated with myself for not thinking of that when I was actually building the damned microscope. It's mistakes like that which make me realize how far I have to go just to get to average. Sigh...

I made a box once. But it disappeared on me after a few moments, never to be seen again. It was like when I accidently sent the noob to hover over the roasting pig.

I periodically find prims floating over my skylab. They have my name on them, so I know I made them and somehow put them there, but they're always a bit of a mystery. I never remember losing anything - they just seem to appear.

The noob over the pig was funny. He looked a little scary just floating out there, but I suspect he was nice and warm floating over the fire, and he likely smelled deliciously smoky and porky. That was Abraham Lincoln night, wasn't it? God dang - those Abe Lincoln masks seriously cracked me up. I can't imagine what people thought as they tp'ed in, but I suspect it was something like, "What sort of f***ery is this?"

Might be a better idea not to start threads like this. The only thing that can come of it dramaz.

Everyone has different tastes and things can have an entirely different appearance depending on how the photos were taken. I'm all for threads where something is wrong with the outfits, gaps in the seams, missing parts in shoes or things like that but I never understood the need to ridicule someone else's designs.
